On Hindu pilgrims and cross -cultural pilgrimage: The hermeneutics of Jarava Lal Mehta
The life and work of Jarava Lal Mehta (1912–1988) exemplifies the religio-philosophical encounter between India and Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. Garnering an international reputation for his work on Martin Heidegger in the 1960s, Mehta\u27s work in the 1970s and 1980s represents aspects of modern Hindu thought seldom encountered in the works of other more popular authors (e.g., Vivekānanda, Radhakrishnan, Gandhi). Mehta\u27s works make at least two significant contributions to contemporary scholarship on hermeneutics and the Hindu tradition. First, Mehta articulates a postcolonial hermeneutics predicated on the rupture of the self through the encounter with the other. Second, he delineates a postmetaphysical interpretation of the Hindu tradition based on the withdrawal of the other found in the classical theme of viraha bhakti, or “love-in-separation.” In this way, Mehta significantly contests not only forms of perennial philosophy committed to the search for a positive universal ground, but also the monistic ontology of Advaita Vedānta so often privileged by both classical and modern Hindu intellectual traditions. To serve these ends, Mehta proposes the model of the “pilgrim” to represent the self\u27s encounter with the irreducible other. He argues that the pilgrim travels out to an other that interminably resists its intentions and representations: the pilgrim is ontologically incomplete and thus reconciled to its death. Mehta\u27s emphasis on the self\u27s rupture and death consequent to its encounter with the other suggests a significant alternative to the philosophical hermeneutic emphasis on the building up of self through such an encounter. Deploying this hermeneutic of the pilgrim in his interpretation of the Hindu tradition, Mehta suggests that the gopī (milkmaid) represents the postmetaphysical self reconciled to the withdrawn other, thereby displacing the monistic ontology of the Vedānta. To fully understand the complex horizon of contemporary Hindu thought, one must consider the life and work of J. L. Mehta
The teaching of non-professional artists in eighteenth century England.
PhDThe introductory chapter explains terms used throughout
this thesis and why this period was chosen for study. The
history of the introduction of drawing to the curriculum of
Christ's Hospital, the Lens family who were the drawing
masters there, and their drawing manuals and teaching
methods are the subject of the second chapter. The third
deals with the teaching of drawing at private academies,
particularly Thomas Weston's in Greenwich, and with his and
the Bickham family's activities as drawing masters to the
pupils of this academy and the children at the Royal Naval
Hospital. William and Sawrey Gilpin at Cheam Preparatory
School are examined through the surviving correspondence of
the Grimstons of Kilnwick in chapter four.
Alexander Cozens's activities as a drawing master
occupy the remaining half of the thesis. Chapter five
explains how he himself learnt to draw and describes his
earliest known employment as a drawing master at Christ's
Hospital from 1749 to 1754. Chapter six traces his
activities through the 1750's as a private drawing master
and as the author of publications intended to assist the
artistic invention of amateurs and professionals alike. It
also examines his relationship with his son, John Robert
Cozens, with Sir George Beaumont at Eton College, and with
Henry Stebbing who studied Cozeris's 'blot' method. Chapter
seven examines the activities of three of Cozens's private
pupils through their surviving work and family papers in
order to ascertain the element of original artistic
creativity in the landscapes produced under his instruction.
The concluding chapter considers why art education
gained considerable importance in the education of young
gentlemen and gentlewomen during this period, and whether
the drawing masters' methods of teaching them changed.
Finally, the role of drawing masters as creators and
disseminators of artistic theories and their contribution to
the development of English landscape watercolour painting
are discussed.Central research Fund of the University of Londo
Lives and limbs : re-membering Robert Jones : a biography
This is a biography of Robert Jones, 1857-1933. He was a surgeon, and is credited
with bringing orthopaedics from its quack past into its scientific present. This work
explores Jones’ life and times, and examines whether he is entitled to the epithet
‘father of orthopaedics’.
It looks at the history of bonesetting, the influences on Jones’ development
and medical training, and some key moments in his career – notably his involvement
in the building of the Manchester Ship Canal, the planning of Heswall Children’s
Hospital, and the Great War. It argues that although there are other medical men
who could have been credited with fathering orthopaedics, he is indeed the father –
at least of orthopaedics in Britain, if not internationally.
This version of Jones’ life begins with something of his biographer’s journey,
before it explores what and who influenced Jones, and in turn what his legacy has
been to the medical profession.
The accompanying Critical Commentary explores whether or not it is possible
to offer a definition of biography as a genre in the light of its history and purpose. It
examines critical views, considers the mythology that grows up around historical
figures, and also explains the rationale for the structure chosen for organising the
material presented in this new biography of Robert Jones, Live and Limbs: Re-membering Robert Jones
Design, synthesis, and preliminary evaluation of a potential synthetic opioid rescue agent
Abstract Background One of the most prominent opioid analgesics in the United States is the high potency agonist fentanyl. It is used in the treatment of acute and chronic pain and as an anesthetic adjuvant. When used inappropriately, however, ingestion of just a few milligrams of fentanyl or other synthetic opioid can cause opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD), often leading to death. Currently, the treatment of choice for OIRD is the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. Recent reports, however, suggest that higher doses or repeated dosing of naloxone (due to recurrence of respiratory depression) may be required to reverse fully fentanyl-induced respiratory depression, rendering this treatment inadequate. To combat this synthetic opioid overdose crisis, this research aims at identifying a novel opioid reversal agent with enhanced efficacy towards fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. Methods A series of naltrexone analogues were characterized for their ability to antagonize the effects of fentanyl in vitro utilizing a modified forskolin-induced cAMP accumulation assay. Lead analogue 29 was chosen to undergo further PK studies, followed by in vivo pharmacological analysis to determine its ability to antagonize opioid-induced antinociception in the hot plate assay. Results A series of potent MOR antagonists were identified, including the highly potent analogue 29 (IC50 = 2.06 nM). Follow-up PK studies revealed 29 to possess near 100% bioavailability following IP administration. Brain concentrations of 29 surpassed plasma concentrations, with an apparent terminal half-life of ~ 80 min in mice. In the hot plate assay, 29 dose-dependently (0.01–0.1 mg/kg; IP) and fully antagonized the antinociception induced by oxycodone (5.6 mg/kg; IP). Furthermore, the dose of 29 that is fully effective in preventing oxycodone-induced antinociception (0.1 mg/kg) was ineffective against locomotor deficits caused by the KOR agonist U50,488. Conclusions Methods have been developed that have utility to identify enhanced rescue agents for the treatment of OIRD. Analogue 29, possessing potent MOR antagonist activity in vitro and in vivo, provides a promising lead in our search for an enhanced synthetic opioid rescue agent
Reactive Nitrogen in the Tropical Troposphere
The aim of this project was to calibrate a thermal-decomposition chemiluminescence (TD-Chem) instrument, capable of measuring the composition of the reactive nitrogen pool at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO) in the remote tropical troposphere. This data will be used in global atmospheric models in an attempt to better understand the sources of NOx in the remote troposphere and how these could affect background ozone (O3) levels.
Existing nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) data from the CVAO was analysed for the measurement period of October 2006 to December 2011. The aim of this analysis was to identify the cause of the NO2 diurnal, which exhibits a maximum mixing ratio at solar noon, in contrast to the minimum expected due to NO2 photolysis in a clean environment. This anomaly was referred to as ΔNO2. It was found that between 4.12.2007 and 28.2.2009, ΔNO2 was significantly higher and caused an average increase in ΔNO2 of 5.09 ± 0.94 pptv to the entire dataset. This period corresponded with the orientation of the inlet, resulting in the heating of the sample and potentially significant levels of thermal dissociation of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) to produce the NO2 observed. Future speciated measurements of the reactive nitrogen pool will help address the ΔNO2 anomaly fully.
Calibrations of the inlet in the TD-Chem instrument were carried out using PAN, n-propyl nitrate (NPN) and nitric acid (HNO3) standards to represent peroxyacyl nitrate (PNs), alkyl nitrate (ANs) and HNO3 reservoirs. Quantification of the standards was achieved using a molybdenum oven and a gold oven in conjunction with a small flow of carbon monoxide, both heated to 300 ̊C. Both methods are known to cause ~ 100 % conversion of NOy compounds to NO, to allow detection via chemiluminescence (NOy = NOx + PNs, ANs, HNO3, aerosol nitrate, halogen nitrates etc.). Both ovens agreed on the concentration of the standards to > 99 %. Temperature ramp experiments quantified the temperature range at which each standard thermally dissociated to form NO2 and a companion radical in each of the quartz ovens used in the TD-Chem instrument. All experiments show thermal dissociation kinetics consistent with current understanding and kinetic theory. Deviations that do occur are either known and can be quantified, have been experimentally deduced, or a work schedule is in place in order to quantify them in the near future. Completion of the instrument calibration and subsequent installation of the TD-Chem instrument at the CVAO is projected to be in the summer of 2013
