Includes image: 'figure from greek antiquity diptych', 1931.AbstractThis article explrores Melina Mercouri’s singular autobiographical work I Was Born Greek (1971). The title of the autobiography is part of the famous answer given by Melina Mercouri, in the morning of July 12,1967, when it was announced that Stylianos Pattakos2- one of the three dictators of the military regime of the 21 April 1967, in Greece, - revoked her Greek citizenship and confiscated her property. The complete ‘legendary’ answer was: “I was born Greek, I shall die a Greek. Mr. Pattakos was born a fascist. He will die a fascist.” (1971:177 & 1983: 348)The aim of this article is to investigate the tactics and strategies of self perception and self-presentation as articulated in Melina Mercouri’s autobi ography. Towards this goal, basic concepts, such as “citizenship”, “personal” and “national identity” are discussed, together with what degree these con cepts identify an individual as a citizen of a state, or rather as a human be ing with existential autonomy. Also, we discuss the concepts of self-perception and self-presentation and their interconnectedness; whether the first is a basic requirement of the second, or if the two are complementary; whether they are influenced by ‘internal’ (e.g. spiritual, emotional, psychological), or/and external (e.g., political, social, gender, and cultural) factors. Furthermore, we investigate whether autobiography is not only a process of self-perception and selfpresentation, but also a process of self-discovery, and even of self-construction. More specifically, we investigate if, the way in which Mercouri presents herself, is the result of conscious choices with specific purposes, or rather the result of internal, emotional and psychological needs of an author to articulate her subjectivity, or both. Finally we examine whether Mercouri’s autobiography presents a selfimage that corresponds to the artistic, cultural and political symbol which we identify her name with the name today

Aquí no mueren los muertos = The dead won't die here

This book of essays explores the relationship between photography and grief in Mexico. "The dead won't die here" is inspired by a chilhood anecdote of Melina Balcázar. Every year, on the Day of the Dead, the author and her brother were required to play outside the house as the deceased relatives in particular the older sister visited those who were still alive in the family home. The author explains what it meant to alternate between the Catholic Church, to which her mother went, and the Mexican Patriarchal Church, where she went with her father and that teach a spirituality made of syncretism, together with the conviction that bridges can be established, through trance, possession, and clairvoyance, with the dead. Unlike this spirituality lived in childhood, the spiritism that Balcázar explains used mechanical means such as photography to formalize, far from the principles of faith, a contact based on technique and reasoning with the hereafter

    Training Videos: Cornering Socio-Cultural Movement

    No full text
This thesis explores how the movement, presentation and interaction of the body are learned through one’s identifier; gender, culture, nationality, race, religion, and social class. Expected norms to one’s mannerisms and way of being in the world is determined and controlled by each of these identifiers. Through my practice-led-research with my body as a tool, I explore social norms which limit my agency over my haptic and intuitive embodied way of moving. With my Defence work, Subversive Training Videos, a diptych large-screen video installation with an unconventional bench, I aim to unlearn and challenge social norms linked to social behaviours

In the Ecuadorian Humid Tropics, Melina plantations (Gmelina arborea Roxb) are being affected by a complex disease of vascular wilt and stem rot, with epidermal peculiarities, of which until now the causal agent (s) are not known. In the present investigation, it was proposed to describe the symptomatology of the disease and to identify the phytopathogenic fungi associated with diseased trees in the Ecuadorian Humid Tropics by means of morphology. For its effect, two plots of 500 m2 were planted in two provinces (Los Ríos and Cotopaxi), three plantations of different ages (2, 3.5 and 5 years). The symptomatological description was made, the incidence and severity of the disease were evaluated using a scale of 5 categories. For each plot, 3 trees were dissected, whose tissues were taken to the laboratory, where 3 methodological strategies were used (wet chamber, carrot sandwiches and potato-destroyer-agar medium (PDA) to stimulate the expression of phytopathogens. Chlorosis, turgor loss, dry growth apices, epicormic sprouts in the stem and fulminating wilt were detected, and Ellis & Halst. Ceratocystis fimbriata and Fusarium species were identified consecutively with the three methodological strategies. of the disease was 18.0%, 7.9%, and 8.5% for the plantations of 2, 3.5 and 5 years respectively. The diseased trees in the plantation of 2 years were found in scales 2 to 5, while in the plantation of 3.5 years they were placed in category 2, in the most adult plantation it was in the scale 2 and 5 of evolution of the disease.
