Response to Setting the record straight on obstetric gaps
We write in reply to the letter ‘Setting the Record Straight on Obstetric Gaps’.2 We thank the author for his reply to our previously published short commentary ‘Changes in out‐of‐pocket charges associated with obstetric care provided under Medicare in Australia’ (ANZJOG 2018; 58; 362–365). Overwhelmingly what ‘Setting the Record Straight on Obstetric Gaps’ highlights is the lack of transparency regarding the setting of fees that are charged to women, and the influence of ministerial decisions and lobbying on the fees that are paid from the woman's purse at the end of a private specialist consultation. No Full Tex
Recreation and rest in Leisure-Time Centers : an interview study from children’s perspective

(100% pure : nature as product or as part of a 'natural' lifestyle?)
New Zealand is considered today the adventure capital of the world (Bentley et al., 2001; Callander; Page, 2003; Cater, 2006; Higham, 1998a, 1998b; Higham, Carr; Gale, 2001). This is, in part, due to a tourism industry that is aware of the appeal of the country’s natural landscape and that develops tourism products with a focus on this characteristic. The more than 300 adventure tourism activities available for tourists and locals is an example of this fabricated representation (Bentley; Page; Laird, 2001). Another example is presented by Higham (1998a), who states that the Maori culture and the National Park system (directly related to the availability of spaces for engaging in outdoor activities) are the two main New Zealand attractions for international tourists. For this author, the ‘green’ areas play a central role in
‘selling’ New Zealand to international markets
Response to: The “Cascade of interventions”: does it really exist?
[Extract] To the Editor, We write in reply to the letter The "Cascade of interventions": Does it really exist? We thank the author for their reply to our previously published manuscript "A cascade of interventions: A classification tree analysis of the determinants of primary cesareans in Australian public hospitals". The findings of our study show that the top two reasons for primary cesareans in Queensland public hospitals— abnormal fetal heart rate and inadequate contractions— were strongly associated with artificial rupture of membranes, induction of labor, and epidural analgesia

Uncertainty and sensitivity in global carbon cycle modelling.
This paper summarises the results obtained from a stochastic sensitivity study in the area of global carbon cycle modelling. In particular, it outlines how Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) techniques and associated Generalised Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) have been applied to a modified box-diffusion model. Using parametric and input uncertainty measures derived from independent sources, the analysis shows that the model produces an ensemble response for atmospheric CO2 whose mean evolution is reasonably consistent with that observed over the industrial period (1765 to 1990). However, the situation is more ambiguous in relation to the amplitude distribution of the stochastic realisations: here, there is a larger than expected variance arising from the assumed uncertainty, although this may be due to unavoidable limitations in the assumptions about parameteric uncertainty used in the MCS analysis. The analysis also shows that the a priori model response is less consistent with 13C measurements and not at all consistent with the 14C observations, while GSA suggests that, from over 20 model parameters, only a small number have a statistically significant effect on the model response in 1990. In addition, the results from MCS, using the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Scenario IS92a inputs, demonstrate that the uncertainties in the projections of the CO2 concentrations using this model are significantly higher than those suggested so far using deterministic methods. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the stochastic methodology are discussed
Statistical separation of observed global and European climate data into natural and anthropogenic signals
Observed global and European spatiotemporal related fields of surface air temperature, mean-sea-level pressure and precipitation are analyzed statistically with respect to their response to external forcing factors such as anthropogenic greenhouse gases, anthropogenic sulfate aerosol, solar variations and explosive volcanism, and known internal climate mechanisms such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). As a first step, a principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to the observed spatiotemporal related fields to obtain spatial patterns with linear independent temporal structure. In a second step, the time series of each of the spatial patterns is subject to a stepwise regression analysis in order to separate it into signals of the external forcing factors and internal climate mechanisms as listed above as well as the residuals. Finally a back-transformation leads to the spatiotemporally related patterns of all these signals being intercompared. Two kinds of significance tests are applied to the anthropogenic signals. First, it is tested whether the anthropogenic signal is significant compared with the complete residual variance including natural variability. This test answers the question whether a significant anthropogenic climate change is visible in the observed data. As a second test the anthropogenic signal is tested with respect to the climate noise component only. This test answers the question whether the anthropogenic signal is significant among others in the observed data. Using both tests, regions can be specified where the anthropogenic influence is visible (second test) and regions where the anthropogenic influence has already significantly changed climate (first test)
Of good use or serious pleasure : Vitruvius Britannicus and early eighteenth century architectural discourse
The central thesis of this work is that Colen Campbell's
three volume Vitruvius Britannicus (1715-25) is not, as it has been frequently seen, a Palladian manifesto designed to change architectural practice in England (and in the process Campbell's own fortunes as an architect), but rather a publication celebrating architectural achievements, consumed by polite society.
The twentieth century view of Vitruvius Britannicus, stems from John Surnmerson's seminal work, Architecture in Britain 1530-1830. It posits Vitruvius Britannicus as a stylistic manifesto that served the particular interests of Colen Campbell and his associates as advocates of and builders in the Palladian style, and foregrounds the idea of the author. This view has been incorporated almost unquestioningly into subsequent interpretations not least
because it conforms to a powerful 'Whig' interpretation of history emphasising periodisation, style, revolution, development, and the search for origins. In contrast I argue that Vitruvius Britannicus met the demands of a market interested in architecture as a topic of polite
conversation. The subscription lists for Vitruvius Britannicus show that it was neither priced to be, nor received as, a builder's manual, nor was it a stylistic manifesto. Rather, it was a celebration of contemporary British architecture that gave pleasure and some instruction to polite society. Drawing on disciplines outside of art and architectural history, I consider
Vitruvius Britannicus as an object of consumption offering an alternative reading of the publication that highlights a number of important avenues for further research.
Chapter 1 positions the thesis within critiques of stylistic history. Chapter 2 briefly introduces
some historiographic issues, and then considers the contents and style of the publication, and
the nature of its subscribers. This highlights issues neglected in histories of Vilruvius Britannicus and challenges many of the commonly held conceptions of the publication. These conceptions are then examined in Chapter 3 in the light of evidence and issues raised in the
previous chapter. Chapter 4 considers other architectural and illustrated books and positions Campbell's work within wider publishing paradigms such as cartography and a literature of tourism. Chapter 5 outlines some of the intellectual ideas that influenced the way in which
publications such as Vitruvius Britannicus were understood. This is developed in Chapter 6 which considers the way in which Vitruvius Britannicus functioned within a contemporary
architectural discourse that codified the group identity of a polite elite
