Identifying key Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) dimensions associated with academic success amongst postgraduate medical students
Many elements have been identified as contributors of academic success amongst medical students but to group these components in order to develop guidelines for intervention strategies is atypical. One such tool which could allow this possibility is the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) developed by the University of Bristol. ELLI is an online self-assessment instrument which identifies and measures the dimensions of learner development. It comprises of 90 key questions used to measure the seven dimensions of learning power: changing and learning; meaning making; critical curiosity; creativity; learning relationships; strategic awareness and resilience.
This study used ELLI to explore learning dimensions as potential drivers for academic success. A small cohort of thirty-three first year postgraduate medical students consented and completed the first ELLI before starting formal classes. Only eighteen of these completed it a second time, 45 days later. The data from the ELLI questionnaires were analysed both for the whole cohort and separately for each academic performance group (defined using grade point averages).
The results showed that the students obtained the highest scores for the meaning making or changing and learning dimensions, and the lowest scores for creativity or resilience. After a period of postgraduate study, only the successful students displayed significant improvements in the mean ELLI scores, with increases for all ELLI dimensions apart from resilience. Those who were less successful made declines in more than one dimension.
It was concluded that ELLI is an effective instrument for identifying key learning dispositions and it is proposed that an intervention could be developed in the future to improve academic achievement

Exploring narratives of lifelong learning: a case study of two primary school teacher's professional practice in implementing a lifelong learning project.
The aim of this research is to explore the everyday narratives for two year 5 teachers in a primary school when asked to implement a lifelong learning project into their classroom. Teachers have few opportunities to pause and reflect on their professional practice, so the two year 5 teachers were highly motivated to engage with the research given that the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) was being piloted in their classes. With this purpose, I undertook a narrative approach.
There was also a strong rationale behind providing the teachers with a space in which to have a reflective conversation to allow their narratives to be told. This came from an underlying concept within ELLI, that students have the opportunity to reflect upon their own learning and yet it is not naturally inbuilt for the teachers. The teacher participants constructed a narrative over time as they explored both the negative and positive aspects of implementing a lifelong learning project.
In my analysis I was interested in both the structural element to how the narrative is spoken but also what significant themes are produced across the narratives and the commonalities found. The analysis is a combination of work based on Gee (1991), Mischler (1995) and Riessman (2008) and includes my own part in the co-construction of the narrative.
The narratives allow the teachers to explore their pedagogy and belief system into lifelong learning not only for the children but also for themselves. I identified and interpreted the significant themes from the teachers’ narratives, reflecting how they link to the literature review and the identified learning dimensions within ELLI. Although the experience is around the lifelong learning project, the narrative that unfolds goes far beyond this and reflects very much the individual belief systems, ethical viewpoints, experience, culture and pedagogy as teachers.
Key words: narrative, lifelong learning, reflective conversation, ELLI, teachers, professional practice

Elli Therrien has been a part of this project since it began in the Fall of 2012. She discusses how her interests hadn’t lined up with going into media and communications studies, but as she started working on the project she found she wanted to be involved in the group effort. Therrien talks about Professor Amoshaun Toft, faculty advisor for the project, and how building the radio station has been a significant learning experience
History and future lines of urbanization process in Finland
Urbanization began in Finland relatively late by comparison with other European countries, but the process has taken place all the more rapidly. The population has concentrated to the southern part of Finland and there are nowadays only few growth centres. The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of urbanization over a long time span and light up the different scenarios of future population distribution. The number of cities and towns in Finland increased by 57 % between 1950 and 1998, but one notable feature of these cities and towns is their small size in terms of population, 86 % of them having less than 50 000 inhabitants and only 6 of them exceeding 100 000 inhabitants in 1998. According to forecasts the population will concentrate still in future in Finland. The proportion of people who are living in the built-up areas will be 84 % in 2005. Finland`s development is 15 years behind Sweden: Sweden reached this figure already in 1990. The population of the rural areas will continue to decrease in future. Population of Helsinki will grow up to 2020 by almost 68 000 persons. The population level will be then 611 361 inhabitants.
Country-internal migration and labour market activities of immigrants in Finland
This article concentrates on the special features of country-internal migration of immigrants. These features include regional development such as the urbanisation rate, the specialisation of labour markets in general, and the human capital potential of immigrants in the form of education. The internal migration of immigrants within the country and the growth of urban centres are analysed on the national level by municipalities and, in more detail, in nine differently structured local labour market areas. The position of immigrants in the local labour market areas depends on their education and the active role they take in employment. Urban centres with developed, multi-structured labour markets have strengthened their edge over others in attracting the in-migrants from more peripheral areas in the sub-group of immigrants as in general, too. Internal and international migration are related to each other. The larger urban centres and refugee receiving municipalities play an important role in linking international and internal migration.
Part I: From Finlandia Forest to Pikku-Finlandia – Design for a transportable wooden building. Part IIb: Principles of reversible building design in a transportable wooden building: Case Pikku-Finlandia
Kokonaisuuden seuraavien osien tapaustutkimukset pohjautuvat Pikku-Finlandia-suunnitelmaan.
Diplomityökokonaisuuden osa IIa on Elli Hirvosen yksilötyönä tuottama opinnäyte. Hirvosen diplomityössä tutkittiin elinkaaren hiilijalanjälkeä siirrettävässä puurakennuksessa. Pikku-Finlandian hiilijalanjälki laskettiin elinkaariarviointina ja siirtokelpoiselle rakennukselle muodostettiin mahdollisia tulevaisuusskenaarioita, joiden avulla tutkittiin siirroista aiheutuvien päästöjen vaikutusta koko elinkaaren hiilijalanjälkeen. Elinkaariarvioinnin yhteydessä luotiin viitekehys laskentatyökalulle, jolla voidaan teoriassa arvioida rakennuksen siirtämisen kannattavuutta hiilijalanjäljen näkökulmasta. Tutkielman tuloksista tulkittiin, että rakennuksen siirtopäätöstä tukee tieto siitä, kuinka paljon rakennuksen käyttöikää voidaan siirron ansiosta pidentää. Tulosten pohjalta suositellaan siirrettävää rakennuskantaa inventoivan tietokannan rakentamista siirtokelpoisten rakennusten käyttösuunnittelun sekä hankintapäätösten helpottamiseksi.
Diplomityökokonaisuuden osa IIb on Jaakko Torvisen yksilötyönä tuottama opinnäyte. Torvisen diplomityössä selvitettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksena käänteisen rakentamisen periaatteita. Pikku-Finlandian suunnitelmaa analysoitiin käänteisen rakennussuunnittelun näkökulmasta. Analysoinneilla tunnistettiin muunneltavuuden ja purkamisen näkökulmasta haastavia kohtia. Puuelementtirakenteisen Pikku-Finlandian osiin purettavuus havainnollistettiin kohta kohdalta aksonometristen purkukaavioiden avulla. This is a master’s thesis in three parts, written by Elli Hirvonen and Jaakko Torvinen. The first part of the thesis is a collaborative work of both authors. The second and third parts are independent works of Hirvonen and Torvinen.
Part I is a report that narrates the process of designing Pikku-Finlandia, a temporary wooden building which hosts the event and meeting venue of Alvar Aalto’s Finlandia Hall during its renovation. In the independent thesis studies of Hirvonen and Torvinen, the research is focused on Pikku-Finlandia as a case study.
Part IIa is authored by Elli Hirvonen. Hirvonen’s study examines the carbon footprint of Pikku-Finlandia, and how transporting a modular building affects its life cycle impacts. The carbon footprint of a transportable building was assessed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and a scenario analysis. A calculation tool was created for comparing different transportation scenarios and their potential effects in a building’s carbon footprint. The need for an inventory database of transportable buildings was recognised. It is suggested that establishing such database would assist in municipal decision making regarding property management, and further improve the amount of knowledge concerning transportable buildings.
Part IIb is authored by Jaakko Torvinen. In Torvinen’s study, the principles of Reversible Building Design (RBD) were researched through a literary review. Disassembly potential of Pikku-Finlandia was analysed from the perspective of RBD, and challenges in demountability of the design were recognised. The dismountability of the prefabricated element construction of Pikku-Finlandia was illustrated though a series of axonometric disassembly diagrams. It was demonstrated that reuse of buildings and building products is possible. To promote transformability, reusability and disassembly of buildings, three design principles are suggested: visible solutions, separate systems and dismountability. These three design principles are suggested to be described as Rewindable Building Design
Elli-sovelluksen AWS-pilvimigraatio
Nykypäivänä oppilaitosten ja yritysten yhteistyömahdollisuudet ovat tärkeä osa työelämän ensiaskeleita ja usein avaintekijöitä henkilökohtaisen ammattitaidon aidossa kehittämisessä. Elli-sovellus on Jyväskylän ammattikorkeakoulussa toteutetun Ticorporate-opintojakson lopullinen sovellustuotos, jonka tarkoitus on hallita osapuolien yhteistyötoimintaa.
