IN VARIETATE CONCORDIA: IDENTITA' EUROPEA E RAPPRESENTAZIONE SOCIALE
This elaboration aims to study the construct of European identity through the methodology of social representations, specifically using the Central Nucleus Theory, in an international perspective. Participants from Italy, Portugal, and Spain will be included in the study. The work is structured into five chapters. The first chapter focuses on the psychological definition of European identity and presents the main studies in this regard. The second chapter introduces the theoretical foundations of social representations, while the third chapter describes the methodologies and instruments commonly used in this type of research. The fourth chapter represents the core of the work and presents three studies: an exploratory study on the social representation of being European among young people in the three countries, a comparison between the representation of European identity among left-wing and right-wing voters in Italy, and an analysis of the differences in the social representation of being European between a group of Portuguese young people and a group of Portuguese adults. Finally, the fifth chapter proposes reflections on the results that emerged from the studies and their relevance for research in both the field of European identity and social representation
Are we ready for climate-friendly food choices? – The cross-country study of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Italy
The adoption of climate-friendly food choices has been recognized as a high-impact personal action, which offers a vast opportunity to combat climate change more effectively. Thus, this study aims to analyse consumer food behaviour across three countries (Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia) that vary in their levels of development, pro-environmental policies sophistication, corruption, and sociocultural contexts. Based on a comprehensive theoretical framework developed from previous literature a cross-country cluster analysis was implemented with a non-probability sampling procedure, forming a convenience sample (N: BA= 215, RS=141, ITA=296). Cluster analysis identified three cross-country segments that highlight similarities in the willingness to adopt climate-friendly food choices: A. Ready for climate-friendly food patterns, B. Responsible & Climate-Conscious, and C. Traditional, ready for “small changes” in lifestyle. Despite their pro-environmental attitudes, respondents view climate-friendly behaviour as involving small changes in daily routines, such as reducing food waste and purchasing local, seasonal, and unprocessed foods. The research findings indicate that, regardless of the level of economic development and social context, similar market trends exist, along with consumers who are eager to embrace lifestyle changes, particularly concerning climate-friendly food choices and behaviours. Consequently, the food sector must intensify its efforts to foster innovation to provide appealing, affordable, and accessible climate-friendly food options, while public policy must steer tailor-made interventions emphasizing social dialog and coalitions driving policy outreach and success to enhance feelings of personal responsibility to answer - “How to act – Whom to be?”
Strategies for Engaging and Outreaching NEETs in Italy: Insights From Active Labour Policies
Outreaching and engaging young people who are not in education, employment, or training (i.e., NEETs) represents a significant challenge for public policies. They often belong to marginalized and disadvantaged categories and find themselves isolated with low levels of trust in the future, in their capacities of finding a job, and, above all, in institutions. Much research has emphasized how insufficient and unsuitable the strategies used so far have proved to be. However, there is a lack of clear mapping in the literature of what approaches have been suggested and addressed by the different guidelines. This study explores the strategies that a specific active labour policy uses to intercept and engage vulnerable youth and NEETs. This research employed a qualitative methodology that centres on the examination of official documents of the regional plans for the guaranteed employability of workers (Garanzia di Occupabilità dei Lavoratori). To conduct the analysis, the MAXQDA software package was utilized, and a content document analysis was implemented. Three main themes emerged from the analysis: capillarity of services, digitalization, and communication, each with its respective sub-themes. These themes provide valuable insights into the current strategies employed to engage vulnerable NEET youth, as well as other demographic categories, highlighting the potential strengths and weaknesses of these policies. The study holds the potential to contribute significantly to the development of more targeted and sustainable public policies, aiming to address the challenges faced by vulnerable NEET youth in Italy
Building Bridges: Community-Based Projects for Participation and Social Inclusion of Rural NEETs
This chapter focuses on factors that facilitate community based projects for providing effective and sustainable responses to the challenges faced by young people Not in Employment, Education, or Training (NEETs) in rural areas and more specifically to promote their quality of life and social inclusion. In line with Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model (1977, 1979) and considering community based projects as part of the exosystem, we aim to identify the barriers and constraints faced by projects targeting young NEETs in rural areas. As part of the collaborative research developed by the members of the "WG1 Rural NEETs Social Networks and Social Inclusion" of the Rural NEET Youth Network, we identified five promising community based projects in Portugal, Italy, Sweden, North Macedonia, and Lithuania and conducted semistructured interviews with the project coordinators. Our analysis showed that the identified projects take into account the different levels of the bioecological model and the need to involve how young people and local communities. Both these factors are crucial for their success and sustainability over time
Challenges for Formal Organizations Engaging Volunteers During Regular and Crisis Times According to Polish and Italian Volunteer Coordinators
The recent crises in Europe impacted the volunteering
patterns within formal organizations that provide
support in regular and crisis times. In our paper, we
investigated how volunteer coordinators from formal entities
(public/governmental and non-governmental) perceive
(1) the patterns of volunteering engagement (long-term
versus episodic) in regular and crisis times, (2) the processes
of retaining volunteers during crises; (3) the trust of
the community toward various types of organizations
during social crises; (4) the role of informal support groups
in relation to the tasks of their organization. Between June
and October 2023, we performed an online-based study
(total N = 55)—in Poland (N = 28) and Italy (N = 27). The
survey had multiple-choice and open-ended questions, and
the results were analyzed qualitatively using the thematic
analysis framework. The findings indicated that volunteer
coordinators reckon that long-term and episodic volunteers
play crucial and complementary roles in helping organizations
achieve their objectives. This implies that organizations
should recognize the value of both types of
volunteers and consider them essential resources for pursuing
organizational goals. The results also suggest that the
volunteer retention strategies are worth outlining or revisiting
within organizations, and attention should be paid to
psychological support. According to coordinators, trust in
non-governmental organizations is perceived as crucial in
the beneficiaries’ decisions about where to seek help.
Collaboration with informal groups is advised, given that
the goals can be achieved together, mutually using the
resources provided by both types of helping entities
Come è cambiato? Young Europeans, how did they experience the early months of the Covid-19 health emergency? Was their state of mind - an indicator of well-being - affected by the pandemic? How did it change? How much did they feel at risk? What was the impact of the pandemic on their relationships? And on their national identity? This chapter aims to answer these questions by analyzing a sample of 6,000 young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 living in Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain
