The 'Synopsis Chronike' and its place in the Byzantine chronicle tradition: its sources (Creation – 1081 CE)

    No full text
The subject of this thesis is the Synopsis Chronike (or Synopsis Sathas), a Byzantine chronicle of the thirteenth century that conveys the history of the world, starting from Adam and concluding with the recapture of Constantinople in 1261. The study focuses on the first part of the text (Adam – Nikephoros Botaneiates), and more specifically on the comprehensive presentation and analysis of the whole corpus of its sources, passage by passage, in order to reconstruct the background of the chronicle and to determine its place in the Byzantine chronicle tradition. Following the introductory first chapter, which sets out the aims of the thesis and establishes its methodology, chapter two offers an overview of the chronicle itself, and a first discussion of the main issues it presents: the key characteristics of its narrative structure, its manuscript tradition, and – mainly – the problem of its authorship, with special reference to the commonly supposed author, Theodore Skoutariotes, bishop of Kyzikos. Chapter three conveys a detailed presentation of the results of our research; following the discussion of the sources and influences of the proem, it attempts to place each passage of the Synopsis Chronike in the context of any related texts, which are then identified as 'main sources', 'other sources' and 'parallel passages', depending on their link to the Synopsis Chronike. Chapter four discusses individually each text that appears as a source of the Synopsis Chronike, and locates its place amongst the whole corpus of the sources. Furthermore, it examines the passages for which we were not able to identify a main source, and suggests possible sources that have not survived. Finally, the concluding chapter of the thesis summarises the earlier discussion, and attempts to combine the different pieces of information, and to provide an overall picture of the background of the Synopsis Chronike in order to establish – to the degree that it is possible – its position in the Byzantine chronicle tradition

    The FOLE Table

    Get PDF
This paper continues the discussion of the representation of ontologies in the first-order logical environment FOLE. According to Gruber, an ontology defines the primitives with which to model the knowledge resources for a community of discourse. These primitives, consisting of classes, relationships and properties, are represented by the entity-relationship-attribute ERA data model of Chen. An ontology uses formal axioms to constrain the interpretation of these primitives. In short, an ontology specifies a logical theory. A series of three papers by the author provide a rigorous mathematical representation for the ERA data model in particular, and ontologies in general, within FOLE. The first two papers, which provide a foundation and superstructure for FOLE, represent the formalism and semantics of (many-sorted) first-order logic in a classification form corresponding to ideas discussed in the Information Flow Framework (IFF). The third paper will define an interpretation of FOLE in terms of the transformational passage, first described in (Kent, 2013), from the classification form of first-order logic to an equivalent interpretation form, thereby defining the formalism and semantics of first-order logical/relational database systems. Two papers will provide a precise mathematical basis for FOLE interpretation: the current paper develops the notion of a FOLE relational table following the relational model of Codd, and a follow-up paper will develop the notion of a FOLE relational database. Both of these papers expand on material found in the paper (Kent, 2011). Although the classification form follows the entity-relationship-attribute data model of Chen, the interpretation form follows the relational data model of Codd. In general, the FOLE representation uses a conceptual structures approach, that is completely compatible with formal concept analysis and information flow.Comment: 53 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables, submitted to T.A.C. for review in August 201

Minding the aesthetic: The place of the literary in education and research.

    No full text
The article discusses the significance of aesthetic as a mode of cognition and means of social cohesion. It notes the relation of aesthetic knowledge with the perception or intuition, the emergence of such awareness into something durable and the response to the embodiment. It describes the evolution of aesthetic delight in the human species, the sense of sense of beauty arising on one's realization of the formal qualities of something, through the poem presented by the author on achievement

HIGH RESOLUTION CAVITY RING DOWN SPECTROSCOPY OF THE 403^{3}_{0} BAND OF THE A~\tilde{A}2^2E^{\prime\prime} STATE OF NO3_3 RADICAL.

Author Institution: Laser Spectroscopy Facility, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210The NO3_3 radical is expected to exhibit a Jahn-Teller effect in its degenerate A~\tilde{A}2^2E^{\prime\prime} electronic state.{, nderline{\textbf{107}}, 2829, 1997.}} A more comprehensive understanding of its structure can be achieved using high resolution rotationally resolved absorption spectroscopy of its different vibronic bands. The high resolution absorption spectra of 403^{3}_{0} vibronic band of the A~\tilde{A} 2^2E^{\prime\prime} excited state of NO3_3 have been successfully recorded for the first time using our jet cooled cavity ring down apparatus. The parallel 403^{3}_{0} band is a vibronically allowed transition and shows the same contour as the one observed previously for 40n^{n}_{0} (n=1,2). The oblate symmetric top model Hamiltonian including both centrifugal distortion and spin rotation terms is used to analyze the spectrum. The rotational analysis of this band, supported by combination differences, demonstrate the existence of doubled lines as were observed for 40n^{n}_{0} (n=1,2) bands. The possible sources of this splitting are being investigated

Using cases for school principal performance standards: Australian and New Zealand experiences.

    No full text
This article reports an international validation of a framework for performance standards for school principals. The framework, generated in Australia in 1996-1997, was applied in New Zealand in 2000. The framework involved an innovative method of establishing standards for principals' performance, based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods of making judgements about the quality of principals' work. Using cases of critical incidents in which principals made decisions in their everyday work, the essential elements of quality performance, together with a set of dimensions on which performance varied, were identified. This study explored the application of these essential elements and dimensions in a context in which similar school system restructuring is in progress. Three questions were addressed: How valid are the Australian cases in the New Zealand setting? How applicable to the New Zealand setting are the three continua—ditties, interpersonal skills, moral dispositions—that comprise the framework? And finally, How applicable to the New Zealand setting are the particular duties, interpersonal skills and moral dispositions? This study supports three conclusions. First, cases generated in one context are not applicable in a different cultural setting. However, the method of developing cases is readily applied cross culturally. Second, the values underpinning the framework developed in Australia are similar to, but not the same as, those about which principals in New Zealand assess principal performance. Third, there are similarities, but also important subtle differences, in the particular dimensions on which the framework is grounded. The study indicates the validity of using cases to generate performance standards for school principals
