Get PDFElizabeth Babbitt speaks about her experiences growing up in rural Montana in the early 1900s, as well as her life as a school teacher traveling around Montana. She recounts her parents’ stories of how they ended up in Montana together. She remembers her young childhood, attending the Curlew School, and having to repeat a couple of grades. Babbitt also recalls her teaching career as a young woman, traveling to rural schools to teach while attending school to receive certification. She describes her childhood experiences interacting with Native Americans, riding the school wagon, and eating fresh watermelon from a neighbor’s garden. Babbitt discusses social events the school held such as Sunday school and box socials that she was not allowed to attend as a child. Valuing autistic adolescents as epistemic agents and experts of their own lives
No full textAutistic individuals, in particular autistic adolescents are often seldom-heard and in turn can be denied personhood, across a range of social environments, including education and research. The field of autism research has often failed to attend to the views and voices of those with embodied experience, those who have specialist expertise, the voice of autistic people themselves. As such, autistic adolescents experience epistemic injustice, in which their capacity as a knower or epistemic agent who creates, uses, or conveys knowledge, including their lived experience, is rejected. This thesis seeks to amplify the voices of autistic adolescents by exploring their views and experiences in relation to pertinent aspects of identity. The systematic literature review in Chapter 2, explores how autistic adolescents conceptualise autism, whilst Chapter 3, an empirical paper, examines the effects of gender stereotypes on adolescents who identify as autistic and gender diverse. In turn, this thesis aims to re-examine narratives surrounding autism, ensuring that they are formed by those for whom they are concerned, those with lived experience and therefore value autistic adolescents as epistemic agents and experts of their own lives

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
