GLOBAL BLUEPRINTS FOR CHANGE First Edition--Prepared in conjunction with the International Workshop on Disaster Reduction convened on MEASURES FOR MITIGATION OF EARTHQUAKE IMPACTS
The Global Blueprints for Change contain guidance for working together to improve the capability to identify indicators of physical, social, enterprise, and environmental vulnerabilities throughout the world and to select and implement realistic solutions to reduce them towards acceptable levels. MEASURES FOR MITIGATION OF EARTHQUAKE IMPACTS Dana Prochazkova 1 Abstract: Human beings have no possibility to avert or to accurately forecast the earthquake, and for that reason they have only a possibility to mitigate its consequences. The mitigation is possible only in the case when we correctly understand to the problems connected with the earthquake impact and when we reasonably assess the present uncertainties. The earthquake impacts may be mitigated by technical, legal, organisational and educational measures. The examples and references used in the present paper are influenced by the fact that author has been living and working in Central Europe and that she has been working for nuclear facilities. Emotional Communication training focused on increasing the readiness of police officers for socially demanding situations using virtual reality (VR)
Police officers daily deal with many psychologically and communicatively demanding situations, including, for example, communication with victims of serious crimes, persons demonstrating suicidal intent, or bereaved persons. These situations evoke strong psychological reactions and require social skills and experience. At the same time, it follows from scientific studies that police officers are often faced with a lack of social skills that would help them manage these situations. The cause is mainly insufficient formal training in the field of psychology, focused especially on handling psychologically demanding situations and practicing communication skills. In collaboration with experts from various fields, we have created an application in virtual reality (VR) aimed at strengthening the communication skills of the police when reporting serious news. In this methodology, we present the functioning of the Virtual Police VR (P-VR) application, which aims to strengthen the ability of police officers to effectively manage the notification of serious news and thereby protect the health of all involved. The training takes place in such a way that the student (policeman or policewoman) is fitted with 3D glasses, in which he is projected an environment with a virtual character, possessing a range of emotional, verbal and non-verbal reactions. The student's task is to report serious news (e.g. the death of his son in a car accident), while his progress is observed and evaluated by an experienced lecturer who also controls the educational VR software. This methodical aid is primarily intended for lecturers and police officers in basic vocational training. However, it can also be used in the further training of police officers, including police crisis interventions, or in the training of members and employees of other security forces or IZS units who communicate unfavorable news during the performance of their work. The P- VR application can be used both once (e.g. with the aim of exposure during classroom training) and repeatedly, especially for users who need to master communication techniques more deeply or for whom one-time training is not sufficient
Conscious awareness is necessary to assess trust and mimic facial expressions, while pupils impact trust unconsciously
To investigate how visual awareness modulates the relationship between emotional expressions, mimicry and trust, participants played a series of trust games and saw either their partners' faces with a neutral, happy, or fearful expression, or their partner's eyes in which the pupil size was large, medium, or small. Subjects' trust investments, facial movements, and pupil responses were measured. In half of the trials, the stimuli were rendered invisible by continuous flash suppression (CFS)
