Structural health monitoring of a curved roadway bridge: model calibration and collapse simulation aspects

    No full text
This work aims to explore the potential of the Applied Element Method (AEM) for structural analysis application in the framework of bridge monitoring, focusing in particular on the aspects of model calibration and simulation of the collapse behaviour. An AEM model of a curved roadway bridge undergoing slow landslide-induced movements was built and calibrated by using the results of ambient vibration testing and modal identification. A simulation under increasing displacements caused by the landslide was carried out, predicting the deformation evolution of the bridge and comparing it with the current state of damage observed on site

Non-financial and Integrated Reporting, Governance and Value Creation

    No full text
"Non-financial reporting (organisations reporting on their social and environmental impacts) and integrated reporting (organisations disclosing their value creation plans by referring to social, environmental and more traditional capitals in an integrated way) have gained considerable prominence over the years due to pressures on organisations to demonstrate accountability and communicate how they create value to their stakeholders. Used in conjunction with existing management and governance systems, non-financial reporting, and more recently integrated reporting, has the potential to divert managers’ focus on short-term value towards sustainable value creation. However, there are many limitations and detractors that prevent meaningful improvements in disclosure practices, as dealt with in some detail in the books, The Routledge Handbook of Integrated Reporting (de Villiers et al., 2020) and Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting (de Villiers and Maroun, 2018). Research on non-financial reporting and integrated reporting has grown significantly over recent years (see: de Villiers et al., 2017a, de Villiers et al., 2017b, Rinaldi et al., 2018, de Villiers and Maroun, 2018, Hahn and Kühnen, 2013, Girella et al. 2019, Aureli et al.,2019). A diverse range of topics have been studied, including the relation between internal practices and non-financial reporting (Cho et al., 2015, Kerr et al., 2015), and the influence of integrated reporting on various types of disclosure (Farneti et al., 2019; Montecalvo et al., 2018, Sukhari and de Villiers, 2019, Terblanche and de Villiers, 2019, Trebucq et al.,2017). While our knowledge of non-financial reporting and integrated reporting is growing alongside the respective literatures, there are opportunities for in-depth studies on how governance policies and systems can support non-financial, integrated reporting and value creation, and whether non-financial and integrated reporting substantially influence the management and reporting of organisational value. This Special Issue of Meditari Accountancy Research is dedicated to providing new insights and critical reflections on recent developments in non-financial reporting and integrated reporting.

Expander/implant breast reconstruction before radiotherapy: outcomes in a single-institute cohort.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) of reconstructed breasts was associated with major complications and poor cosmetic outcome. The present study assessed complication rates, the link between risk factors and prosthesis removal, as well as cosmetic outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1997 to 2009, 101 consecutive patients received RT after breast reconstruction because of risk factors for relapse (92) or because relapse had occurred (9). At RT, 90 patients had temporary tissue expanders and 11 had permanent implants. Twelve patients underwent neo-adjuvant chemotherapy; all patients received adjuvant chemo- and/or hormone therapy. RESULTS: At a median follow-up of 50 months, late toxicities occurred in 28 patients: pain in 7, lymphedema in 6, G1 cutaneous toxicity in 5, and subcutaneous toxicity in 19 (2G1, 9G2, 7G3, 1G4), with more than one side effect in 12. In 8 patients the prosthesis ruptured (3), was displaced (3), was displaced and ruptured (1), or lost shape (1). Capsular contracture was classified in 89 patients as IA in 14, IB in 47, II in 10, III in 11, and IV in 7. Twelve prostheses (11.9%) were removed. The only significant factor for prosthesis removal was age (p = 0.007). Judgments of cosmetic results were available from 81 physicians and 84 patients. Outcome was excellent/good in 58/81 physician judgments and in 57/84 patient evaluations. Overall inter-rater agreement on outcome was good (κ-value 0.64; 95% CI: 0.48-0.79). CONCLUSION: RT to reconstructed breasts was associated with low rates of late toxicity and prosthesis removal. Cosmetic outcomes were, on the whole, good to excellent

    AAC in communication disorders

    No full text
Any condition that alters the acquisition of a morpho-syntactic organization of thought will compromise communicative interaction. Verbal disability relates to diversified morbid conditions; these could be congenital or acquired, permanent or temporary and could arise over the entire lifespan. The degree of verbal disability presents a different range of severity and not only involves speech but cognitive and emotional aspects. In all these conditions a possibility of communication can be facilitated or substituted through ecological or mediate interventions, using technological devices of differing complexity. AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) refers to any communication method used to increase natural communication or to replace it if entirely absent. The presuppositions and the general principles of AAC are described. © 2010 Informa Healthcare
