I rapporti euro-atlantici dopo l'undici settembre 2001: correnti politico-intellettuali negli Stati Uniti
This dissertation studies the relationship between the United States and its European allies from the end of the Cold War to the present, with a focus on the period following the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. The primary conclusion is that 9/11 accelerated divisive trends within transatlantic alliance.
The dissertation has an historical introduction, seven chapters and the conclusions. The historical introduction analyzes the structural changes occurred within the transatlantic relationship after 1989. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the political movements and ideas that shaped American foreign policy after 9/11, with a focus on the neoconservative movement. Chapters 3 and 4 define the idea of modern empire ; its use in reference to the United States; and the idea that the European Union is becoming a superpower able to counterbalance the United States. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 focus on three looming challenges within the transatlantic relationship: the future of NATO; relations with Russia; and the rise of China.
The conclusions summarize the weaknesses of the relationship between the United States and its European allies; highlight how they deteriorated after 9/11; and describe the dangers that lay ahead for the transatlantic alliance
G.M. Trevelyan's Garibaldi
This article is the text of a talk given at the University of Urbino, Italy, during the Conference, Garibaldi e i movimenti democratici internazionali, 9-10-11 November 2007. My intention was to bring Trevelyan's great trilogy Garibaldi's Defence of the Roman Republic, Garibaldi and the Thousand and Garibaldi and the Making of Italy, to an Italian audience, to explore the often passionately enthusiastic relations between English and Italian lovers of democracy and freedom at the time of the Risorgimento, and to place the author and his vision in the very English but also pan-European liberal tradition. For this reason, my study opens with a discussion of Trevelyan's admiration for Lord Byron, aristocratic champion of revolutionary movements in Italy and Greece, and two of his other Italophile heroes, the Liberal statesmen Gladstone and Russell. I explore how Trevelyan's prefaces to his volumes, that for the first written for its first edition, and that for the second written for a reissue eleven years after its first publication, develop his ideas of a "people" which may be the English or the Italian people, his ideas of emerging nationhood and of the perennial and international struggle for freedom. This inquiry therefore opens out to embrace his Great War experience as a military ambulance commander on the Italian Front, and his insistence that without the Risorgimento the French and British would have had no united Italy as their ally during the climactic fight against German and Austro-Hungarian autocracy and militarism. Vital to Trevelyan's thinking here is his concept of "the living stream of history" as, alas, war, and of the past as a still living force. This brings my study to how Trevelyan wrote of the war of 1914-18 that "We have been at war with Metternich and Bismark," both of these national leaders being long dead, and his delight at having had for his own war enemy that same Kaiser Franz Joseph whose soldiers had hunted Garibaldi and the dying Anita in 1849. I conclude with an analysis of how rebellious and anti-establishment our distinguished Whig professor and author can be, who when he calls Garibaldi "a guerrilla figher" is offering the highest praise he can think of, and for whom the Bourbon and Hapsburg monarchies and the Vatican are merely disgusting tyrannies with no redeeming features
The project aims to tell, through an architectural promenade, those that are the significant features of corso Garibaldi, connecting them to the history and culture of the city of Milan. These characteristics are highlighted both through a "traditional" museo diffuso, consisting of road signs, and through a series of temporary exhibitions set up in buildings that are significant for the district; the two sides of the project are then connected to each other through an application, which allows the visitor to navigate independently within the museum complex. Finally, the museum is completed by complementary services, an infopoint and a multifunctional space, inserted in strategic points along the route, easily reachable.

Starting from a careful study of the history and evolution of the district, we have identified the places that make up the network of the widespread museum and divided them thematically, in order to create paths. Among these, we have chosen six spaces that, due to cultural interest and vocation, are more suited to hosting temporary events; we have therefore designed some light display elements which, starting from basic modules, fit in the maximum respect to the place in which they are inserted. For each space, an exhibition has been created that enhances its importance for the district and connects it to a network of similar places within the city of Milan: in this way the visitor is informed of the value of the places he visits and is encouraged to find out what other treasures are hidden in the streets of the Milanese city
Anita Garibaldi: A Brazilian Heroine in North American Literature
The overarching theme of the present paperwork lies in casting some light to the historic Brazilian character of Anita Garibaldi (1821–1849) in order to draw the public’s attention to distinct perspectives other than the official one. So as to achieve these goals, the romance studied was written by Dorothy Bryant in 1993 and it is called Anita, Anita. With a flowing language, the author was able to present Anita herself, the idealist, the wife, the lover, and the mother. In this literary work she is not shown as a simple shadow of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882), her husband, anymore, she is a sensible and political woman who wants to follow what she considers to be fair. Thus, this study consists in a brief discussion concerning possibilities for the historical novel writing and how the preferences chosen by the author might affect the perception of the characters and the historical past itself in the course of History
Milano.
The author traces the itinerary of the portrait of Garibaldi that Prilidiano Pueyrredón painted to access the cultural environment of Buenos Aires in 1860, revealing through this iconography the importance of the Italian migrant component in the formation of modernizing premises and new forms of sensibility among the “porteños”.El autor traza el itinerario del retrato de Garibaldi que Prilidiano Pueyrredón pintó en 1860 para acceder al ambiente cultural de Buenos Aires, revelando a través de esta iconografía la importancia del componente migrante italiano en la formación de premisas modernizadoras y nuevas formas de sensibilidad entre los “porteños”.L’autore traccia l’itinerario del ritratto di Garibaldi che Prilidiano Pueyrredón dipinse nel 1860 per accedere all’ambiente culturale di Buenos Aires rivelando, attraverso questa iconografia, l’importanza della componente migrante italiana nella formazione di premesse modernizzanti e nuove forme di sensibilità tra i “porteños”
Dual labour market theories and underground employment: is there a dualism even in the even in the irregular sector?
The research deals with the characteristics of the irregular labour. Current literature considers that irregular labour arises because of the heavy tax burden on labour, or because of the existence of regulations which impose too many constraints on the labour market. In Italy the
labour market has some effective constraints, for instance, due to firing regulations, minimum wage legislation, or to regulations on multiple job holdings (for instance it is only since last year that retired people can have new jobs legally), whereas, regarding taxation, we think that it is not always a valid explanation of irregular labour. Actually, during past years there were several facilities to new hiring, especially in southern Italy. We suggest that irregular jobs can originate from different causes, and, consequently, they can have different characteristics, referred to as good and bad irregular match . As to our opinion, dual labour market theories are the main framework for studying this phenomenon. This theory assesses that there are two tiers in the labour market, therefore, two type of jobs: the jobs in the primary sector and those in the secondary sector; the secondary tier of the market is the one where turnover is more accentuated. This hypothesis is supported by some empirical observation about irregular labour. Actually, data available for Italy, (INPS), tells us that irregular workers, in the most of cases, have been employed very recently. The 85% of irregular workers censored by INPS during 2001 had been working for less than 12 months; the same percentage in 2002 was 0.88. Dual labour market approach has been used by Boeri and Garibaldi (2002), who analyzed irregular labour in depressed areas. We use a similar framework, which is mainly adapted from the research of Acemoglu (2001), where dualism arises as endogenous choice caused by the different technology used in two different sectors
GA-Adaptive Template Matching for Offline Shape Motion Tracking Based on Edge Detection: IAS Estimation from the SURVISHNO 2019 Challenge Video for Machine Diagnostics Purposes
The estimation of the Instantaneous Angular Speed (IAS) has in recent years attracted a growing interest in the diagnostics of rotating machines. Measurement of the IAS can be used as a source of information of the machine condition per se, or for performing angular resampling through Computed Order Tracking, a practice which is essential to highlight the machine spectral signature in case of non-stationary operational conditions. In these regards, the SURVISHNO 2019 international conference held at INSA Lyon on 8–10 July 2019 proposed a challenge about the estimation of the instantaneous non-stationary speed of a fan from a video taken by a smartphone, a pocket, low-cost device which can nowadays be found in everyone's pocket. This work originated by the author to produce an offline motion-tracking of the fan (actually, of the head of its locking-screw) and obtaining then a reliable estimate of the IAS. The here proposed algorithm is an update of the established Template Matching (TM) technique (i.e., in the Signal Processing community, a two-dimensional matched filter), which is here integrated into a Genetic Algorithm (GA) search. Using a template reconstructed from a simplified parametric mathematical model of the features of interest (i.e., the known geometry of the edges of the screw head), the GA can be used to adapt the template to match the search image, leading to a hybridization of template-based and feature-based approaches which allows to overcome the well-known issues of the traditional TM related to scaling and rotations of the search image with respect to the template. Furthermore, it is able to resolve the position of the center of the screw head at a resolution that goes beyond the limit of the pixel grid. By repeating the analysis frame after frame and focusing on the angular position of the screw head over time, the proposed algorithm can be used as an effective offline video-tachometer able to estimate the IAS from the video, avoiding the need for expensive high-resolution encoders or tachometers
