    No full text
The lyric poetry of the exiled Austrian-Jewish author Stella Rotenburg, who has received several awards for her work, is an expression of the great tragedy of the 20th century, the Shoah. Stella Rotenberg writes partly to preserve the memory of the victims and partly to come to terms with her own traumatic experiences. Born in 1915 in Vienna, Rotenberg was confronted with anti-Semitism from an early age. The Anschluss of 1938 meant the end of her life in Austria. In 1939 she managed to flee to the Netherlands and to Great Britain, where she lives today. In her poetry, which was written from 1940 onwards, the author made widespread use of biblical texts, themes and figures. This study is devoted to the biblical references in her work.In the introductory part of this study the inter-textual analytical method is presented, and a limited model chosen for this survey of selected biblical references. Further, the use of biblical references in German-language literature, particularly in the 20th Century, is explored. The second chapter examines the life and work of Stella Rotenberg. The third chapter employs the above-mentioned method to analyse two poems: ?Kain? (see Gen. 4: 1-16) and ?Laß mein Volk ziehen? (see Ex. 5: 1). The interpretation of the poems is based on a synopsis of the biblical text, the literary form of the reference, and the biography of the author.Stella Rotenberg?s biblical references are always overshadowed by the Shoah, and express her personal experience of suffering and loss. However she does not use biblical material only to express her own experiences. She also uses the Bible purposefully in her plea for peace, and for a universal right to life.vorgelegt von Edith PetschniggGraz, Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 201

Momentum for Catalysis: How Surface Reactions Shape the RuO2 Flat Surface State

The active (110) surface of the benchmark oxygen evolution catalyst RuO2 spans a flat-band surface state (FBSS) between the surface projections of its Dirac nodal lines (DNLs) that define the electronic properties of this functional semimetal. Monitoring well-known surface adsorption processes of H2, O2, NO, and CO by in operando angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we selectively modify the oxidation state of individual Ru surface sites and identify the electronic nature of the FBSS: stabilized by bridging oxygen Obr pz, the FBSS disperses along ⟨001⟩ oriented chains of bridging Rubr 4dz2 orbitals, collapses upon Obr removal, yet remains surprisingly unaffected by the oxidation state of the undercoordinated 1f-cus-Ru species. This directly reflects in the ability of RuO2(110) to oxidize CO and H2 along with its inability to oxidize NO, demonstrating the FBSS’s active role in catalytic charge transfer processes at the oxygen bridge sites. Our synergetic approach provides momentum-resolved insights to the interplay of a catalyst’s delocalized electronic band structure and the localized orbitals of its surface reactantsa route toward a microscopic understanding of heterogeneous catalysis

In her poetry, the exiled Austrian-Jewish author Stella Rotenberg made widespread use of biblical texts, themes and figures. Her biblical references are always overshadowed by the Shoah, and express her personal experience of suffering and loss. Stella Rotenberg wrote partly to preserve the memory of the victims of the Shoa and partly to come to terms with her own traumatic experiences. Born in 1915 in Vienna, Rotenberg was confronted with anti-Semitism from an early age. The “Anschluss” of 1938 meant the end of her life in Austria. In 1939 she managed to flee to the Netherlands and finally to Great Britain. In 1940 she began the write poems. Stella Rotenberg has received several awards for her work

Reconsidering first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review of the literature

    No full text
Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is typically recommended as first line therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, but the adherence rate of CPAP is problematic. This study's objective was to systematically review the literature relating to CPAP as first line therapy for OSA and compare it to surgical literature on the same topic. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, examining Medline-Ovid, Embase, and Pubmed databases. The primary search objective was to identify all papers reporting the results of (1) randomized clinical trials (RCT) of CPAP for the treatment of adults with OSA; and (2) both randomized and non-randomized clinical trials and case series on the surgical treatment of OSA in adults. A PhD-level biostatistician first screened papers, and then those that met study criteria were retrieved and analyzed using standardized forms for each author. The primary outcomes were adherence rates of CPAP. Results: A total of 82 controlled clinical trials for CPAP and 69 controlled and non-controlled surgery trials were identified for analysis. Variation in CPAP use within reported RCT trials were identified, and the majority of patients in the studies would eventually be considered non-adherent to CPAP. Conclusions: When considering the numerous patient-related factors that come into play when CPAP is prescribed, the concept of CPAP as gold-standard therapy for OSA should be reconsidered. In many cases surgery can provide a better overall outcome. This study's results suggest that certain patients with OSA may be managed more effectively with surgery than CPAP, without confounding issues of treatment adherence
