Experimenting with Commodities and Gifts: The Case of an Office Hotel
The article explores four different images of the relationship between market economy and gift economy drawn from economic sociology and anthropology. Second, it presents a case study of an office hotel, which experimented with the relationship between markets and gifting by urging the companies it hosted to share knowledge and commercial contacts. Drawing on Callon's notions of framing and overflowing, the article shows how various interactions ('overflows') either displaced, supported or reinvigorated the boundaries between market and gifting at the office hotel. It notes that these overflows characteristically involved the sharing of access to interactional spaces and information about interaction partners. Finally, it suggests that a particular form of politics of exchange comes into view in the empirical case. This politics centres on the discovery of pragmatic and relatively benign forms of parasitism between modes of exchange
Future and furniture - A study of a new economy firm's powers of persuasion
This article explores the differences between two strategies of persuasion. The first strategy, called drawing things together, is Actor-Network Theory's classic analysis of how modern science has gained tremendous persuasive powers through systematic inscription and centralized accumulation of information traces. The second strategy, called drawing contrasts together, is derived from the author's empirical analysis of the rhetorics and materialities of a Scandinavian New Economy firm. The persuasive powers of this firm, it is argued, are based on its ability to evoke and articulate a series of pointed contrasts between the attractive working life within the firm and the ordinary and problematic work life elsewhere. The article argues that both persuasive strategies work in a pragmatic sense. But where "drawing things together" enacts a relatively stable and knowable world, the persuasive strategy of "drawing contrasts together" depends on, and enacts, a world of dramatic epochal changes
URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs070119The paper explores the phenomenon of witnessing the future through a case study of how a Scandinavian new economy firm managed to persuade a number of business journalists that it was "the future". It describes the procedures and rhetorical strategies that the manager deployed to turn the journalists into witnesses. It compares the manager's strategy to other cases of effective witnessing in courtrooms and in science. It concludes that the manager's persuasiveness is derived from his ability to articulate a series of pointed contrasts between the attractive working life within the firm and the problematic work life elsewhere. Finally, it notes that the manager's strategy enacts a time-world characterised by dramatic epochal changes, which is radically different from the more stable and knowable time-world that is enacted in ordinary scientific discourses.

Homo Participatus:On the Framing of Engagement
The paper notes two different approaches to 'engagement' in the STS litterature: critical public engagement of science and co-construction studies respectively. It argues that the construction of publics and users may be thoroughly intertwined. Finally, it explores these connections through an empirical analysis of how public/user engagement is framed in a particular case of design work
A Study of a New Economy Firm’s Powers of Persuasion
The article is an empirical analysis of how a Scandinavian new economy firm was able to persuade a number of business journalists that it represented ‘the future’. It analyses how visitors to the firm were met with a specific and persuasive combination of rhetorical and material ressources. It suggests that the persuasive power of the firm was based on its ability to evoke and articulate a series of pointed contrasts between the attractive working life within the firm and the ordinary and problematic work life elsewhere. The article suggests that this strategy of drawing contrasts together differs from the mode of persuasion usually described by STS.

New thoughts about old issues and old thoughts about new issues:Reconceptualizing STS approaches to engagement
The large and growing literature on 'public engagement' has centred on now-familiar themes of science and democracy, critiques of the deficit theory, relations between the sciences and their publics, and the need to 'open up' scientific governance to wider social issues and concerns. In this paper, we hope to suggest some new theoretical departures and perspectives on what has become an 'old' (but nevertheless significant) set of issues. How has the notion of 'engagement' migrated over time and what new meanings has 'engagement' acquired? What socio-technical arrangements are necessary for the performance of 'homo participatus' and how does this concept relate to more established notions of 'homo economicus'? When and how can it be said that the publics have 'engaged' - and what does this form of taking into account imply? Finally, what of the moral dimensions within STS accounts of engagement: what alternative moralities might be identified and performed within different re lationships of engagement? The paper will draw upon and develop a number of empirical sites in order to explore the changing configurations of engagement and new ways of thinking about engaging. These will include the operation of 'engagement initiatives' within scientific governance and attempts by private enterprises to engage their customers in the development of new innovative products. Our intention will be stimulate discussion and also to highlight some of the issues which will be developed in the larger session to which this paper is an introduction
