Relational Competence and Alexithymia: How are they Related?
The purpose of this chapter is to present two case studies illustrating the possible relatedness between alexithymia (Sifneos, 1973) and the ERAAwC Model of Relational Competence Theory (L'Abate, 1983)to verify whether the five components of the ERAAwC model can help explain the alexithymia construct in the clinical context
Alexithymia Dimensions as Parenting Challenges
The purpose of this chapter is to relate the construct of alexithymia (Sifneos, 1973)with the relational competence theory (L'Abate, 1983), and in particular the ERAAwC model. To understand the construct of alexithymia and explain it in light of the relational competence theory, it is crucial to focus one’s attention on the role and management of emotions and affections in people’s lives: according to the ERAAwC model, the start of our entering into relation with others is linked to how each of us feel, accepts or avoids emotions in response to what is happening to us internally or externally. In this sense, alexithymia, i.e. the “without words to express feelings” may be seen as an avoidance of feelings and emotions within the relational context. In order to better understand these aspects, this work focuses on a context – that of a family with a disabled child – where feelings and emotions are highly strained in order to understand how “feelings” are managed, accepted or avoided in a specific relational context
Family Environment Scale
The Family Environment Scale (FES) assesses the social climates of all types of families. It focuses on the measurement and description of the interpersonal relationships among family members, on the directions of personal growth which are emphasized in the family, and on the basic organizational structure of the family (Moos, Insel, Humphrey, 1974, p.3)
This research developed from a need to answer specific questions about emotional-behavioral problems in preschool children. From a theoretical point of view, this need forced one to focus on the “clinical” meaning of emotional-behavioral problems in pre-school children and their assessment processes, especially from a multi-informant perspective. Particularly, this perspective was a topic of interest in an empirical investigation in the first study, where discrepancies between informants and their possible perceptions were considered with particular attention. The initial research question was expanded to deal with the identification of risk and protective factors in the psychological development of preschool children. On this regard, the second study proposed a multi-factorial model to understand the emotional and behavioral problems of children which took into account individual and relational aspects, including especially the family. Finally, the third study considered the use of a theoretical model proposed in the first two studies with a sample of parents who turned for help to social services to identify from the model critical elements that discriminated families which could be considered functional from those defined as clinical
Cosmological dynamics: from the Eulerian to the Lagrangian frame. Part I. Newtonian approximation
We analyse the non-linear gravitational dynamics of a pressure-less fluid in the Newtonian limit of General Relativity in both the Eulerian and Lagrangian pictures. Starting from the Newtonian metric in the Poisson gauge, we transform to the synchronous and comoving gauge and obtain the Lagrangian metric within the Newtonian approximation. Our approach is fully non-perturbative, which implies that if our quantities are expanded according to the rules of standard perturbation theory, all terms are exactly recovered at any order in perturbation theory, only provided they are Newtonian. We explicitly show this result up to second order and in both gauges. Our transformation clarifies the meaning of the change of spatial and time coordinates from the Eulerian to the Lagrangian frame in the Newtonian approximation
Relational Competence Theory: Research and Mental Health Applications
The purpose of this book is to elaborate and update with recent and relevant research a contextual and developmental relational competence theory (RTC) in intimate/nonintimate relationships. The volume opens out the RTC literature with emphasis on its applicability to interventions examining what is robust and verifiable both in the lab and the clinic
Post-Newtonian cosmological dynamics of plane-parallel perturbations and back-reaction
We study the general relativistic non-linear dynamics of self-gravitating irrotational dust in a cosmological setting, adopting the comoving and synchronous gauge, where all the equations can be written in terms of the metric tensor of spatial hyper-surfaces orthogonal to the fluid flow. Performing an expansion in inverse powers of the speed of light, we obtain the post-Newtonian equations, which yield the lowest-order relativistic effects arising during the non-linear evolution. We then specialize our analysis to globally plane-parallel configurations, i.e. to the case where the initial perturbation field depends on a single coordinate. The leading order of our expansion, corresponding to the ``Newtonian background'', is the Zel'dovich approximation, which, for plane-parallel perturbations in the Newtonian limit, represents an exact solution. This allows us to find the exact analytical form for the post-Newtonian metric, thereby providing the post-Newtonian extension of the Zel'dovich solution: this accounts for some relativistic effects, such as the non-Gaussianity of primordial perturbations. An application of our solution in the context of the back-reaction proposal is eventually given, providing a post-Newtonian estimation of kinematical back-reaction, mean spatial curvature, average scale-factor and expansion rate
The chapter investigates the role of Company Foundations in a changing Welfare State. Although Company Foundations still represent a modest share within Italian Foundations, they are increasingly showing their potential to boost innovation in social service design and provision. When analysing the initiatives and programs recently introduced by Corporate Foundations, the main features of second welfare are easily identified: modes of intervention inspired by the idea of social innovation; focus on the empowerment of the actions’ beneficiaries; governance models promoting the improvement of local community engagement; involvement of additional resources. The first part of the chapter describes the main characteristics of Corporate Foundations and identifies strengths and weaknesses of their action, taking into consideration the recent trends in CSR and corporate philanthropy. The second part focuses on the current and prospective role of Corporate Foundations as second welfare actors through the analysis of the experiences of some of the most influent Corporate Foundations in Italy
