On the European Roots of the Identity Crisis in Japanese Aesthetics of the ХХ-ХХI centuries

During the second half of the 20th century aesthetical students in Japan demonstrated growing activity, aimed at the investigation in the field of national aesthetical heritage applying the method of hermeneutics. The Western forms of philosophical thought and comparative studies were supposed to be necessary for this purpose. But there appeared a group of young scientists, who chose the road of national alienation, who stressed the specific features of Japanese culture in general and the essence of art in particular - Sakabe Megumi, Sasaki Ken’ichi, Iwaki Ken’ichi. As a result, two quite bright but different trends in Japanese aesthetics emerged. They disagree on a number of issues related to the status of aesthetics as a philosophical science and art as a professional activity. At the same time representatives of both movements consider themselves heirs to the ideas of the famous philosopher Nishida Kitaro. Thus, Amagasaki Akira, who shared the point of view of this group on the altering the status of art in the epoch of predominating of mass culture, proposed to give up the previous concept of art, implying professionalism, high quality of works, systematic study and, so to say, sacred horizon, that is the strive for abandoning the frames of mundane world, which are the characteristic features of Western image of art. The aesthetics of ХХ-ХХI centuries in Japan demonstrated variety of opinions: on the one hand, it was the strive for theoretical reconstruction of the fundamental elements of the traditional artistic thought, drawing towards philosophical analysis applying the methods of Western thought. On the other - we see the return movement back to traditional heritage giving up Western methodology and insisting on immediate, spontaneous individual experience abandoning any generalization, which is a kind of “aesthetical nominalism”

DNA hypermethylation encroachment at CpG island borders in cancer is predisposed by H3K4 monomethylation patterns

    No full text
Promoter CpG islands are typically unmethylated in normal cells, but in cancer a proportion are subject to hypermethylation. Using methylome sequencing we identified CpG islands that display partial methylation encroachment across the 5' or 3' CpG island borders. CpG island methylation encroachment is widespread in prostate and breast cancer and commonly associates with gene suppression. We show that the pattern of H3K4me1 at CpG island borders in normal cells predicts the different modes of cancer CpG island hypermethylation. Notably, genetic manipulation of Kmt2d results in concordant alterations in H3K4me1 levels and CpG island border DNA methylation encroachment. Our findings suggest a role for H3K4me1 in the demarcation of CpG island methylation borders in normal cells, which become eroded in cancer.Ksenia Skvortsova, Etienne Masle-Farquhar, Phuc-Loi Luu, Jenny Z.Song, Wenjia Qu, Elena Zotenko ... et al

Possibility of breastfeeding support during the COVID-19 pandemic: A review of world and Russian protocols

    No full text
The review analyses the available literature on the main principles of breastfeeding support in cases of confirmed/suspected novel coronavirus infection in breastfeeding mothers. Various approaches to management of mother and baby in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic have been studied that found reflection in the protocols of the World Health Organization, Chinese, American and European medical communities. The evolution of Russian recommendations is analysed. A rationale is offered for the current guidelines on temporary mother-child separation in the healthcare settings when maternal COVID-19 is suspected/confirmed and on the organization of infant feeding with expressed maternal milk. The literature on the nutritional and biological value and the safety of expressed breast milk stored in various conditions is reviewed. Practical advice is given on organization of an individual breast milk bank at home

The origins of Japanese national symbols

From the point of view of constructivism, the image of national and ethnical identity – the image of a nation as an “imaginary political community” – supposes the inclusion of the specially created symbolic signs, which are recognized by the whole community in general. First of all, these signs encompass national symbols. This article is dedicated to revealing specific aspects of forming of such national symbols as the flag and the anthem of Japan. Analyzing these symbols through the prism of political culture, the authors indicate the stable continuity in symbolism of national tradition modern expression within the historical constituent of Japan
