    Monoclinic Tungsten Oxide with {100} Facet Orientation and Tuned Electronic Band Structure for Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidations

    Exploring surface-exposed highly active crystal facets for photocatalytic oxidations is promising in utilizing monoclinic WO3 semiconductor. However, the previously reported highly active facets for monoclinic WO3 were mainly toward enhancing photocatalytic reductions. Here we report that the WO3 with {100} facet orientation and tuned surface electronic band structure can effectively enhance photocatalytic oxidation properties. The {100} faceted WO3 single crystals are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence band spectra, and photoelectrochemical measurements suggest that the {100} faceted WO3 has a much higher energy level of valence band maximum compared with the normal WO3 crystals without preferred orientation of the crystal face. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the shift of O 2p and W 5d states in {100} face induce a unique band structure. In comparison with the normal WO3, the {100} faceted WO3 exhibits an O-2 evolution rate about 5.1 times in water splitting, and also shows an acetone evolution rate of 4.2 times as well as CO2 evolution rate of 3.8 times in gaseous degradation of 2-propanol.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Electronic band offset in a diamond|cBN|diamond system for modulation doping

    Diamond is a material with promising electronics applications but with challenges in effective doping. Cubic boron nitride (cBN), due to its similar lattice structure, is ideal for forming heterostructures with diamond, to modify electronic properties and especially shift the band positions. Here it is demonstrated how integrating cBN layers of finite thickness in diamond can induce an electronic band offset near the polarized diamond-cBN interface. Beyond the direct density functional theory computations, an analytical model is developed for rapid examination of the band offset, for a broad number of crystallographic orientations, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations. Results show that near [100] and [111] crystal directions, the diamond|cBN|diamond heterostructure displays a 3~4 eV band offset which is expected to facilitate effective modulation doping of diamond

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Pressure induced structural and electronic band transition in CsPbBr3

    Abstract Cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) is a prominent halide perovskite with extensive optoelectronic applications. In this study, we report the pressure modulation of CsPbBr3’s crystal structure and electronic properties at room temperature up to 5 GPa. We have observed a crystal structure transition from the orthorhombic Pnma space group to a new monoclinic phase in the space group P21/c at 2.08 GPa. The structure is associated with ~8% of density jump across the transition boundary. DFT calculations have suggested that the structure transition leads to a change in the electronic band structure, and there is an emergent indirect bandgap at the Pnma-P21/c phase transition boundary at 2.08 GPa. Across the transition boundary, the electronic band gap of CsPbBr3 increased from 2.07 eV to 2.38 eV, which explains its pressure-induced color change. Our study demonstrates the importance of using in-situ crystal structure in the electronic band structure calculations in halide perovskites
