Joachim Pollak (1798-1879): On the Role of the Rabbi in the Jewish Community of Trebitsch in 19th Century
This B.A. thesis is a case study, contributing toward the understanding to the nineteenth-century rabbinate in Moravia. It is based on a unique convolute of Hebrew correspondence of R. Joachim Pollak (1798-1879) who served as rabbi of Trebitsch since 1828 till his death. The convolute, now in the archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague, consists of over four hundred letters written by Pollak himself or adressed to him. The author analyzed the Hebrew manuscript, provided its paleographical analysis and placed it in the context of the epistolographic genre. The chronological list contains the names of Pollakʼs correspondents, many of whom were identified by the author. The letters, interpreted in the light of other archival and secondary sources, provide a unique insight into the competences, duties and activities of a local Moravian rabbi. Recalling (the Jewishness of) Seweryn Pollak
This article focuses on Seweryn Pollak’s poetry, despite him being known first and foremost as an essayist and translator. Although meeting mixed and negative reviews (including his own), Pollak’s poetry is not only a space where personal and fascinating accounts, memories, conversations with the loved ones, and farewells collide, but also the precise genre which the author chooses to talk of his Jewish ancestry, which is left unmentioned in his narrative works, including those addressed to his family and friends. Among Pollak’s poems, there are texts devoted to the Shoah that actualise the sense of danger and alienation; these painful recollections, although dictated by fear, happen to be the poems where self-reflection becomes sharp and thorough, whilethe poetic persona – predominant.
Searching for an insightful perspective on Pollak and his work, this article turns to his captivating handwritten texts with a special emphasis put on the collections of letters exchanged between him and his wife, Wanda Grodzieńska.
To tu, w poezji, Pollak mówi także o swoim żydowskim pochodzeniu, o którym milczy w tekstach prozatorskich, nawet adresowanych do bliskich. Istotne miejsce w lirycznych tomach Pollaka zajmują wiersze zawracające ku Zagładzie, aktualizujące poczucie zagrożenia i obcości.
Mestna hranilnica ljubljanska in propad industrijske delniške družbe Karel Pollak
This year it is the 120\u27h anniversary of the establishment of Mestna hranilnica ljubljanska (Ljubljana City Savings Bank). On the basis of the archives of this monetary institution, the author of the following contribution explores the previously unknown event, never mentioned before in the historical overviews published to date, of the crediting of the major leather industry joint-stock company Karel Pollak in the period between both World Wars. The discussion focuses on the dynamics of the business relationships between the creditor and borrower with the emphasis on the increasingly tense relations in the time when the In the middle of 1920s the Ljubljana City Savings Bank granted a mortgage credit to the family joint-stock leather industry company Pollak in the amount of 25 million dinars, which was extremely generous for the circumstances of that time. The issue was not problematic until the Great Depression, which affected the Pollak leather company severely. A two-year conflict ensued between the City Savings Bank and this company, during which the owners of the company resorted to many dirty and unethical business moves. The dispute concluded with the bankruptcy of the Pollak joint-stock company and the takeover of its factories, carried out by the City Savings Bank. However, the consequences of the granting of this credit did not only affect the Pollak family - the Ljubljana City Savings Bank also suffered considerable financial losses.
Separability conditions from the Landau-Pollak uncertainty relation
8 pages, no figures.-- PACS nrs.: 03.67.Mn, 03.65.Ud, 03.65.Ta.-- ArXiv pre-print available at: http://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0502062We obtain a collection of necessary (sufficient) conditions for a bipartite system of qubits to be separable (entangled), which are based on the Landau-Pollak formulation of the uncertainty principle. These conditions are tested and compared with previously stated criteria by applying them to states whose separability limits are already known. Our results are also extended to multipartite and higher-dimensional systems. The work of the second author (J.S.-R.) has been partially supported by Dirección General de Investigación (Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología) of Spain under grants BFM2001-3878-C02-01 and BFM 2003-06335-C03-02, and the Junta de Andalucía research group FQM-0207.Publicad
Towards an end-to-end rigid protein docking model guided by evolutionary history
Human protein-protein interactions are a key area of study when it comes to understanding the causes of many diseases like cancer. In order to analyze how proteins interact with each other, traditionally scientists use expensive experimental techniques or inefficient computational methods that scan through an entire search space. Recently, computational biologists have been able to tackle the problem of rigid body protein-protein docking using graph neural networks. In this thesis, we aim to improve the results of already existing protein docking machine learning models using in-house evolutionary data. We present a coevolution vector that encapsulates the evolutionary history between a pair of protein residues. By incorporating this vector as a node feature in the protein representation graph, we both guide existing models towards more accurate results and at the same time demonstrate the general utility of our coevolution feature in describing proteins
