Strain-Induced Modulation of Electron Mobility in Single-Layer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se)
In this paper, the effect of biaxial strain on the mobility of single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 , and WSe2) is investigated by accounting for the scattering from intrinsic phonon modes, remote phonons, and charged impurities. Ab ini t io simulations are employed to study a strain-induced effect on the electronic bandstructure, and the linearized Boltzmann transport equation is used to evaluate the low-field mobility. The results indicate that tensile strain increases the mobility. In particular, a significant increase in the mobility of single-layer MoSe2 andWSe2 with a relatively small tensile strain is observed. Under a compressive strain, however, the mobility exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior. With a relatively small compressive strain, the mobility decreases and then it partially recovers with a further increase in the compressive strain
Effects of maternal high fat diet and pharmacological intervention on the developmental origins of metabolic & cardiovascular disease
A high fat (HF) diet leads to hypercholesterolemia and predisposes the individual to developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). We hypothesised that mother‘s HF diet before and during pregnancy and lactation can also influence predisposition to CVD in offspring fed a similar diet. The thesis sets out to investigate whether (1) the effects of long-term consumption of a HF diet by the mother predisposes her offspring to developing a CVD/ metabolic syndrome in adult life and (2) pharmacological intervention using statin alleviates the detrimental effects of maternal HF diet on the health of the dams and their offspring. Female C57BL/6 mice were fed either a HF diet (45% kcal fat) or standard chow (C; 21% kcal fat) from weaning through pregnancy and lactation. Pregnant C57/BL6 mice on HF diet were further given pravastatin in the drinking water (5 mg/kg of body weight per day) either short-term (2nd half of pregnancy and during lactation) or long-term (from weaning through to pregnancy and lactation) to lower cholesterol and improve post-weaning maternal blood pressure. Weaned female offspring from each group were then fed either a HF or C diets to adulthood. Body weight, blood pressure, plasma cholesterol, C-reactive protein (CRP) and bone marrow derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) were measured at 24, 28 and 36 weeks post-weaning in different experiments. Histology of the liver and kidneys were performed. Offspring from hypercholesterolemic mothers on HF diet were significantly obese (bodyweight in grams; 17.2+4.2 vs. 13.8+4.7; P<0.05), hypertensive (SBP mmHg; 134+4.2 vs. 117+3.4; P<0.001), less active (distance in cm; 312 + 31 vs. 563 + 45; P<0.001), demonstrated increased lipid laden vacuoles in liver and kidneys; and showed reduced expression of EPC (P<0.05) than offspring from C dams independent of their postnatal nutrition respectively. Pravastatin therapy in HF mothers resulted in abrogation of these variables in offspring independent of post weaning nutrition (P<0.05). The effects were more permanent when the dams were given long-term statin treatment. The study demonstrates that long-term maternal HF feeding from weaning through pregnancy and lactation predisposes offspring to hypertension, raised plasma lipids, fatty liver, kidney disorders, raised CRP and inhibition of EPC numbers and expression in offspring. Pravastatin treatment of these dams inhibits these effects on the offspring and may reduce their risk of later cardiovascular pathophysiology. The findings may have implications for understanding the effects of the ?nutritional transition‘ to higher dietary intake of fat which could lead to increased cardiovascular disease in many societies.<br/
Piezoelectric aeroelastic energy harvesting
Piezoelectric Aeroelastic Energy Harvesting explains the design and implementation of piezoelectric energy harvesting devices based on fluid-structure interaction. There is currently an increase in demand for low power electronic instruments in a range of settings, and recent advances have driven their energy consumption downwards. As a result, the possibility to extract energy from an operational environment is of growing significance to industry and academic research globally. High fat cholesterol diet consumption in pregnancy attenuates bone marrow-derived circulating endothelial progenitor cells and increases the risk of cardiovascular disorders in the offspring
Bleeding and thrombosis in 55 patients with inherited afibrinogenaemia
Knowledge of the spectrum of symptoms in patients with inherited afibrinogenaemia is limited by the rarity of this coagulation defect. We compared a large series of 55 afibrinogenaemic patients from Iran with 100 patients with severe factor Vm deficiency. In fibrinogenaemia there was a higher frequency of mucosal-type bleeding symptoms but joint and muscle breeding was less frequent and severe than in haemophilia. Umbilical cord bleeding was relatively frequent only in afibrinogenaemic patients. Two young patients developed spontaneous thrombotic episodes and three women had recurrent abortions. Overall,Sn afibrinogenaemia bleeding symptoms are qualitatively different and less severe than in haemophilia. Afibrinogenaemia can also be accompanied by thrombotic manifestations
Vibration of FG porous three-layered beams equipped by agglomerated nanocomposite patches resting on Vlasov's foundation
Equipped sandwich beams (ESBs) are one of the highly demanded structures by the different industries due to their high stiffness to weight ratio. In the present study, the vibrational behavior of a novel ESB is evaluated, analytically. The whole ESB is composed of three layers including functionally graded porous core (FGPC) and two same agglomerated carbon nanofiller reinforced composite (ACNFRC) face sheets. Both nanocomposite layers are constituted from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as matrix and CNFs which serve as reinforcing phase. In addition, the effect of agglomeration is considered in nanocomposites, and its tremendous influence on the normalized frequency is depicted in figure and table formats. For the sake of layers properties estimation, power-law and Eshelby–Mori–Tanaka's (EMT)'s approach are hired for, respectively, FGPC and ACNFRCs. Besides this, Hamilton's principle in conjunction with multi-displacement fields and Fourier series analytical method are cooperated tightly to derive motion equations and solve them mathematically. The evaluation of the impacts of various variables as, different displacement fields, thermal environment, CNFs agglomeration, and Vlasov's substrate parameters can be considered as the novelties of this paper. It is revealed that in the context of agglomeration, a higher number of clusters with a lower volume fraction of CNFs inside them can provide higher magnitudes of normalized frequency and consequently rigidity. This work can be assumed as a reference for further future examinations in such a broad context
