Wild Plant Habitat Characterization in the Last Two Decades in the Nile Delta Coastal Region of Egypt

    No full text
Environmental and land-use changes put severe pressure on wild plant habitats. The present study aims to assess the biodiversity of wild plant habitats and the associated spatiotemporal environmental changes in the coastal region of Dakahlia Governorate following an integrated approach of remote sensing, GIS, and samples analysis. Thirty-seven stands were spatially identified and studied to represent the different habitats of wild plants in the Deltaic Mediterranean coastline region. Physical and chemical characteristics of soil samples were examined, while TWINSPAN classification was used to identify plant communities. Two free Landsat images (TM and OLI) acquired in 1999 and 2019 were processed to assess changes via the production of land use and cover maps (LULC). Moreover, NDSI, NDMI, and NDSI indices were used to identify wild plant habitats. The floristic composition indicated the existence of 57 species, belonging to 51 genera of 20 families. The largest families were Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Chenopodiaceae. The classification of vegetation led to the identification of four groups. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) revealed that electrical conductivity, cations, organic carbon, porosity, chlorides, and bicarbonates are the most effective soil variables influencing vegetation. The results of the spectral analysis indicated an annual coverage of bare lands (3.56 km2), which is strongly related to the annual increase in vegetation (1.91 km2), water bodies (1.22 km2), and urban areas (0.43 km2). The expansion of urban and agricultural regions subsequently increased water bodies and caused occupancy of bare land, resulting in the development of wild plant habitats, which are mostly represented by the sparse vegetation class as evaluated by NDVI. The increase in mean moisture values (NDMI) from 0.03 in 1999 to 0.15 in 2019 might be explained by the increase in total areas of wild plant habitats throughout the study period (1999–2019). This may improve the adequacy of environments for wild habitats, causing natural plant proliferation

Diversity and enterotoxigenicity of Staphylococcus spp. associated with Domiati cheese.

    No full text
A total of 87 samples of fresh and stored Domiati cheese (an Egyptian soft cheese) were examined for the presence of Staphylococcus spp. Fifteen Staphylococcus isolates identified as S. aureus (2 isolates), S. xylosus (4), S. caprae (4), and S. chromogenes (5) were recovered from 15 cheese samples. The S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin G and ampicillin, and one isolate was also resistant to tetracycline. S. aureus isolates harbored classical staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) genes (sea and seb) and recently characterized SE-like genes (selg, seli, selm, and selo). One S. aureus isolate contained a single SE gene (sea), whereas another isolate contained five SE genes (seb, selg, seli, selm, and selo). These results suggest that Domiati cheese is a source for various Staphylococcus species, including S. aureus strains that could be enterotoxigenic

Environmental management of quarries as waste disposal facilities

Problems associated with the disposal of municipal solid waste have become a source of public concern worldwide as awareness of potential adverse environmental impacts and health threats from solid waste has increased. Communities are concerned about the generation and management of solid waste to the extent of refusing to allow new disposal facilities near their homes, often after witnessing the legacy of existing facilities. Under these conditions, the development of national policies for the management of solid waste becomes highly political, all while requiring appropriate technical solutions that ensure environmental protection and proper management plans that support an acceptable solution for the disposal of municipal solid waste. In some locations, the conversion of old quarries into well-engineered and controlled landfills appears as a promising solution to a continuously increasing problem, at least for many decades to come. This paper describes the environmental impacts associated with solid waste disposal in a converted quarry site and the mitigation measures that can be adopted to alleviate potential adverse impacts. Environmental management and monitoring plans are also discussed in the context of ensuring adequate environmental protection during and after the conversion proces

Nontraditional fishing port proposed at Edco city, Nile delta coast

    No full text
AbstractA nontraditional type of fishing port is proposed to be constructed at Edco city located on west side of the Nile Delta coast along the Mediterranean Sea. The fishermen of this city suffers from bone diseases as they use to push their boats manually to go in or out from the sea. The suggested port hasn’t any side effect on the coastal zone and it costs less than the traditional one. The field data collected by Coastal Research Institute (CoRI), research identity, has been analyzed and used as input of the two models. Shoreline survey was used to get the shoreline behavior along the study area and to calibrate the 1-D model. A two dimension model has been applied to get the wave distribution in the study area to study the wave behavior. The shoreline changes in the presence of the traditional port and the new one were conducted using one-dimensional numerical model. The study results showed that the proposed port has relatively low cost and has minimum coastal effect

Landfill evolution and treatability assessment of high-strength leachate from msw with high organic and moisture content

    No full text
The generation of contaminated leachate remains an inevitable consequence of the practice of solid waste disposal in landfills. The collection and treatment of leachate have become common practice in order to prevent environmental pollution. Leachate treatment is highly dependent on the quality of leachate, which in turn is influenced by various factors including waste composition and operational procedures. This paper investigates the treatability of high-strength leachate from pre-sorted and baled municipal solid waste characterized by high organic and moisture content. For this purpose, waste disposal and leachate generation rates were monitored. Leachate samples were collected and analysed for selected indicators including BOD, COD, pH, and NH4-N and a pilot scale treatment plant with coagulation, precipitation and sequential batch biological reactors was constructed to evaluate the feasibility of leachate treatment. Concentration levels were related to biological activity within the landfill and the results indicated that (1) pre-sorting and baling of the waste did not hinder waste stabilization; and (2) the high organic and moisture contents resulted in an extremely strong leachate, particularly at the onset of biodegradation processes, which can affect the leachate treatment facility. The effectiveness of the pilot plant in treating the leachate exceeded 90% using COD and NH4-N as indicator
