Al-Tamimi, Flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded Aluminum Alloy plates, Engineering Structures, Volume 147, 15 September 2017, Pages 473-485, ISSN 0141-0296, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.engstruct.2017.05.067.The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the viability and effectiveness of using Aluminum Alloy (AA) plates as externally bonded flexural reinforcement for reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Ten RC beams were prepared and nine of them were strengthened with externally bonded 2 mm and 3 mm thick AA plates with different mechanical properties. Four strengthened beams had no end wraps or anchorages. Single-layer and double-layer U-wrap CFRP sheets were used in the transverse direction as end anchorages for four strengthened beams and one beam had three double anchorages (two at the ends and one at mid-span). The beams were tested under monotonic load until failure. The goal is to study the effect of using AA plates as externally bonded flexural strengthening material and to explore the effect of end anchorages on the flexural strength and ductility of these beams. The increase in strength over the control unstrengthened specimen ranged from 13% to 40% while the ductility significantly surpassed that of beams strengthened with CFRP sheets. It is observed that the use of end anchorages enhanced the ductility but not the strength of the tested beams. It is also observed that beams without end anchorage failed predominantly in flexure with full de-bonding while beams with end anchorage failed by localized de-bonding and flexure. Furthermore, the performance of the tested beams was compared with numerical predictions by a computer program developed in this study. The results of the numerical models were in close agreement with the measured experimental data. It was concluded that AA plates could be used as an external strengthening material to enhance both the strength and ductility of RC beams in flexure

Citation: Jamal A. Abdalla, Adi S. Abu-Obeidah, Rami A. Hawileh, Hayder A. Rasheed, Shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams using externally-bonded aluminum alloy plates: An experimental study, Construction and Building Materials, Volume 128, 15 December 2016, Pages 24-37 http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2016.10.071Recently developed high strength aluminum alloys (AA) have desirable characteristics that make them attractive as externally bonded strengthening materials. This paper investigates the potential of using AA plates for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Five shear deficient RC beams were externally strengthened using AA plates with different orientations. It is observed that the shear capacity of the strengthened beams has increased in the range of 24%–89% compared to the un-strengthened beam. Shear capacity of the strengthened beams was also predicted using the ACI440, FIB14, TR55 and SMCFT design guidelines with the later one giving the most accurate predictions

In this article we have the intention of telling the peculiar story -for its unique and personal characteristics- and the ups and downs of a Valencian Christian who, in the middle of the second decade of the 14th Century, abandoned his family and home security to live an adventure which certainly, conscious or unconsciously, was going to cause his cruel death. This is the story of Abdalla-Andreu, son of En Domingo Vallés, a Christian of Allah, a renegade Christian

Stock Prices and Exchange Rates: Are they Related? Evidence from South Asian Countries

    No full text
The issue of whether stock prices and exchange rates are related or not has received considerable attention after the East Asian crisis. During the crisis the countries affected saw turmoil in both currency and stock markets. If stock prices and exchange rates are related and the causation runs from exchange rates to stock prices, then the crisis in the stock markets can be prevented by controlling the exchange rates. Moreover, developing countries can exploit such a link to attract/stimulate foreign portfolio investment in their own countries. Similarly, if the causation runs from stock prices to exchange rates then authorities can focus on domestic economic policies to stabilise the stock market. If the two markets/prices are related then investors can use this information to predict the behaviour of one market using the information on other market.1 Most of the empirical literature that has examined the stock prices-exchange rate relationship has focused on examining this relationship for the developed countries with very little attention on the developing countries. The results of these studies are, however, inconclusive. Some studies have found a significant positive relationship between stock prices and exchange rates [for instance Smith (1992); Solnik (1987) and Aggarwal (1981)] while others have reported a significant negative relationship between the two [e.g., Soenen and Hennigar (1998)]. On the other hand, there are some studies that have found very weak or no association between stock prices and exchange rates [for instance, Franck and Young (1972); Bartov and Bodnor (1994)]. On the issue of causation, the evidence is also mixed. Some studies [for instance, Abdalla and Murinde (1997)] have found causation runs from exchange rates to stock prices while other reported a reverse causation [e.g., Ajayi and

It is heartening to note that the number of contemporary Swahili scholars whose work is receiving attention in books and university theses is steadily on the increase. This volume adds Abdilatif Abdalla to the list containing, so far as I know, the names of Muhammed Said Abdulla, Ebrahim Hussein and Euphrase Kezilahabi It is a volume on the poetry of Abdalla which Nyaigotti-Chacha writes with wrumth, understanding and a desire to place in perspective the poet`s works, in particular, Utenzi wa maisha ya Adamu na Hawaa (1971) and Sauti ya dhiki (1973) For this reason, perhaps, it tends to be less critical and more informative Nyaigotti--Chacha divides his work into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the reader to the author`s reasons for undertaking to Wiite it, originally his M A thesis at the University of Nairobi (1980) A bdefbut useful biography of Abdilatif Abdalla (ppJ-9), and a theoretical orientation to the author`s analysis of the works (pp 9--11) - socialistic in the Marxian mould - furnishes the reader with the background required fm a better understanding of what follows in the next two chapters which examine Utenzi and Sauti .. respectively The final chapter investigates the skills of Abdalla as a poe

SOME ASPECTS OF ECOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF BOSWELLIA PAPYRIFERA Del. HOCHEST) IN JEBEL MARRA MOUNTAINS; DAR FUR, SUDAN

This is an ecologically and managerially oriented research of Boswellia papyrifera in the western and southern sub-hills of Jebel Marra, an isolated volcanic massif in the heart of African content. The research was conducted in the period from April 2001 to Nov. 2002. This research attempted to study Boswellia papyrifera under the following aspects: land forms and soils, the growing stock, natural regeneration, seed and seed germination, phenology and resin collection. Four representative Boswellia sites were chosen for this study. Composite soil samples were taken for physical and chemical analysis. The systematic circular line-plot design was used for the inventory of the growing stock, quadrats as subplots were used for natural regeneration surveys. Germination and viability tests were carried out for the seeds. Resin collections on the basis of diameter at breast height were made, interviews with resin producers were carried out and finally the phenology of the species was observed. The most important results of this research are: Sloping sites were found to be representative for the occurrence of Boswellia papyrifera. Soils of Boswellia papyrifera are sandy loam to sandy clay loam. ٦ Boswellia papyrifera was found to be dominant, frequent, abundant and with an importance value index of 188.5. Boswellia is a prolific seed producer, the seeds are three folds, empty, insect infested and viable seeds, and the latter are the smallest in number. The germination of seeds does not exceed 7% under all treatments and the seedlings survival rates ranges from 27.6 - 31.8%. The most important outcome of this study is the lack of natural regeneration. The main reasons behind are grazing, fires, weed competition and water erosion. The phenophases of the species were found to be determined by rain fall and the flowering habit of Boswellia papyrifera is indeterminate. The average annual resin production per tree is 1.44kg/tree, and the optimum productive diameter at breast height ranges between 16-34 cm., trees with diameters at breast height over 34cm are less productive. Resin production was found to be affected by season. In the early season resin production is low and the intervals of collection is prolonged to four weeks, while in the late season resin production increases and the intervals of collections is shortened to two weeks

Deschodt [printed] // HOLOTYPE / Macroderes leipoldti / Abdalla & Deschodt / 2018 [red label, printed]”. Paratypes: 3 ♀♀ (TMSA), same data as holotype. Holotype description. Holotype, ♂ (Fig. 23). Body length 8.4 mm, width 6.1 mm. Head. Clypeal surface smooth between punctures, sometimes becoming shagreened close to punctures. Punctures shallow. Frontal suture very pronounced, slightly angled, almost tuberculate in middle. Pronotum. Convex, lateral margins round. Slight indentation laterally. Lateral border not punctate. Dorsal surface punctate with punctures less than one puncture diameter apart (Fig. 81). Area between punctures smooth. Dorsal part of eyes clearly visible. Elytra. Elytral interstriae 1–8 slightly raised, surface shagreened with irregularly spaced shallow punctures, margins of punctures not carinate (Fig. 95). Striae punctate with punctures separated by 3–4 puncture diameters. Sutural interstria narrow with single row of punctures close together, all other elytral interstriae wider. Stria 9 long, 3/4 the length of elytron, interstria 10 2–3 times narrower than interstria 9 in the middle of elytron. Aedeagus. Sclerite of internal sac short and slightly curved before the apex, with rather broad basal part and without lateral process (Fig. 33). Size range. Females length: 8.0– 8.4 mm, width: 5.7–6.1 mm. Female. Female differs from male by the combination of the following characters: in the female the pronotum is less convex and appears broader anteriolaterally than in the male, and in the female the frontoclypeal suture is less developed than in the male with weakly developed tubercle in the middle. Etymology. This species is named in honour of Dr. Christian F.L. Leipoldt, leading South African author, poet and an amateur botanist with a deep love of the Hantam. Differential diagnosis. This species is easily separated from others in the group by the puncture associated seta being outside and close to the edge of the punctures. It is also very short and stubby. The pronotal punctures on the base are almost round and between 1.5 and 3 puncture diameters apart (Fig. 81). Habitat and distribution. This species occurs on the Hantam Plateau Dolerite Renosterveld (Fig. 2) as defined by Mucina & Rutherford (2006). However, the area where the species was collected should be defined as Hantam Karoo with loamy to sandy soils and a maximum of 175 mm of rain per year (Scholtz, personal observation).Published as part of Abdalla, Ishtiag H., Deschodt, Christian M., Scholtz, Clarke H. & Sole, Catherine L., 2018, An update to the taxonomy of the genus Macroderes Westwood 1842 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) with descriptions of new species from South Africa, pp. 41-75 in Zootaxa 4504 (1) on pages 59-60, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4504.1.3, http://zenodo.org/record/260616
