Explaining contextual influences on the dynamics of public management reforms: reflections on some ways forward

    No full text
As summed up by Christopher Pollitt in a co-authored paper based on a wide analysis of both academic and grey literature on the impact of (new public management [NPM]-type) public management reforms in Europe, the development of scholarly knowledge about the understanding of contextual influences on the dynamics of public management reforms has led to the recognition that certain ‘factors’, properly positioned along time and scale dimensions, exert an influence in a certain direction (facilitate vs. prevent) on certain contents of public management reform (Pollitt and Dan, 2011, pp. 35–47). This state of the art leaves the question ‘how can we then move forward and better qualify causal patterns?’ yet to be fully addressed, as it does for related questions such as ‘how can we bridge the stream of research on public management reform trajectories in different countries2 (which is by definition at a ‘macro’ level of analysis3) with strands of research in public management which aim at comprehending causes and effects in public management by uncovering what happens at more ‘micro’ a level (for example, the stream of research on Public Service Motivation [PSM] – see Perry and Hondeghem, 2008 and Vandenabeele and Hondeghem, 2008 – focused on the motivational structure of individuals working for the public sector)?’

Libya as seen by Edoardo Zavattari. The authors propose a synthesis of the researches carried out in Libya by Edoardo Zavattari between 1927 and 1935, a period in which the scientist was active at the University of Pavia in the role of director of the Istituto and Museo di Anatomia e Fisiologia comparate. The campaigns, organized to study human and animal parasitology, were conducted in the Cyrenaica and Fezzan regions. These studies enabled also the collection of over 200 species of invertebrates and vertebrates whose research, carried on by various zoologists, revealed several new species among which eight were dedicated to him. The parasitological studies dealt especially with the digenetic trematode Schistosoma haematobium, a major agent of schistosomiasis. Zavattari confirmed the presence of this species for Cyrenaica and was the first one to report it for Fezzan, finding out also its distribution and frequency. With the collaboration of Vittorio Erspamer he was able to provide an initial overview on the hematology of this parasitic disease. He studied also malaria in Fezzan, finding that Plasmodium vivax was responsible for most of the cases, but had limited distribution and could be easily kept under control

In a constant but almost underground way compared to the most famous lyric, non-fiction and narrative production, from the late '60s to the early 2000s Edoardo Sanguineti experiments and develops a particular theatrical genre, working on a variety of materials: the shakespearean "Sonnets", the ottave of "Furioso" and the terzine of "Divina Commedia", dramas such as "Faust" and "Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore", Gozzi's canovaccio "L'amore delle tre melarance". Neither adaptations, nor parodies, nor translations, the works that result receive from the author the definition of "travestimenti" and offer themselves to a research that, going through structural, scenic, linguistic and metrical aspects, tries to render their complex and fascinating peculiar physiognomy
