Film Lift-Off from MgO: Freestanding Single Crystalline Fe-Pd Films Suitable for Magnetic Shape Memory Actuation - and Beyond

    No full text
Two complementary lift-off approaches for thin films from MgO, based on standard chemicals, are reported. Accompanied by appropriate annealing treatment they can be employed to synthesize freestanding single crystalline Fe-Pd films in the face centered tetragonal martensitic phase required for miniaturized magnetic shape memory acutation. Generalizations to other materials systems, e. g. epitaxially grown martensitic Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy films, are also demonstrated

Mechanisms of stress generation during bombardment of Ge with keV ions: experiments and molecular dynamics simulations

    No full text
The present contribution focuses on the phenomenology and mechanisms of stress generation in Ge thin films during keV ion bombardment. Experimentally, amorphous Ge ( a-Ge) thin films were grown from vapor, and subsequently bombarded with Ar+ ions with energies of up to 3 keV. Stress generation is monitored by a laser beam deflection method. In order to identify the underlying nanoscale physics, molecular dynamics simulations were performed, in which crystalline and ( a-Ge) films of different densities were irradiated. Experiments and simulations both show generation of compressive stresses, which saturate at approximate to 200MPa and can be attributed to generation of voids with sizes of approximately 1 nm several nanometres below the surface

Mechanisms of stress generation and relaxation during pulsed laser deposition of epitaxial Fe-Pd magnetic shape memory alloy films on MgO

    No full text
Mechanical stress generation during epitaxial growth of Fe-Pd thin films on MgO from pulsed laser deposition is a key parameter for the suitability in shape memory applications. By employing in situ substrate curvature measurements, we determine the stress states as a function of film thickness and composition. Depending on composition, different stress states are observed during initial film growth, which can be attributed to different misfits. Compressive stress generation by atomic peening is observed in the later stages of growth. Comparison with ex situ x-ray based strain measurements allows integral and local stress to be distinguished and yields heterogeneities of the stress state between coherent and incoherent regions. In combination with cross-sectional TEM measurements the relevant stress relaxation mechanism is identified to be stress-induced martensite formation with (111) twinning

Formation flying; an interview with Tobias Gutleb

One of last year's Desig Synthesis Exercise (DSE) groups dived into the concept of fuel saving by letting aircraft flying in formation. They took their project even a step further and applied for the National Aviation Prize, a contest which encourages innovation in aerospace applications. The prize was taken to Delft, and the reason why is explained by team member Tobias GutlebAerospace Engineerin

Development and characterization of Fe70Pd30 ferromagnetic shape memory splats

    No full text
Freestanding Fe70Pd30 foils with a thickness of about 60 pm were fabricated using the splat-quenching technique. A shift of the martensitic transformation temperatures as a function of different annealing treatments (600 degrees C, 700 degrees C, 800 degrees C, 900 degrees C, 1000 degrees C for 15 min) was observed by temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistance and magnetization measurements. The sample annealed at 800 degrees C showed the highest degree of crystallinity for the (200) fcc austenite peak and no secondary phases. Samples annealed below 800 degrees C kept austenite remainders even at -25 degrees C. The transformation temperatures, determined by all three-measurement methods, showed an increase with increasing annealing temperature. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
