DIVERSIFICATION OF THE NIGERIAN ECONOMIC IN THE MIDST OF RECESSION: THE NEED TO GO BEYOND THE RHETORIC

    No full text
Nigeria became independent in 1960. Since her birth as a nation, the country has faced enormous economic challenges that deprived her of desire development. This phenomenon is not unconnected to the mono-cultural status of the nation\u27s economy. This paper looks at the present administration efforts to diversify the Nigerian economy amidst recession. Secondary and primary data are used as a method of analysis. The work observed that overdependence on the oil over the year was a major contributory factor to the country\u27s recessed economy. Rhetorically, government has pay lip service to the transformation of Nigerian economy from mono-cultural to multicultural economy taking in to consideration the country\u27s non-oil abundant natural resources. This however did not translate to reality as proceed from oil is still taking a centre stage in Nigerian economy. It is therefore the recommendations of this paper that government should go beyond the diversification rhetoric and face agriculture, solid minerals and tourism

Nonreactive Research: An Alternative Measurement to Social Phenomenological Approach

    No full text
Abstract Every research aims to identify or provide a solution to a predefined problem. This is often done through systematic investigation of a problem in question. The central theme of this paper is to critically examine the intellectual contributions to the significance of nonreactive research in the social phenomenological approach. The work reviews some works of literature on measurements or instruments of data collection for research purposes. It argues that reactive measurements such as questionnaires and interviews played a domineering role in phenomenological studies. However, the weakness associated with such measures in an understanding phenomenon often affects the reliability and validity of the research owing to the manners in which the research participant practically react to the measures. The application of nonreactive measurements became imperative in complementing these reactive or obtrusive measures as it did not only creates room for more reliable data but ensures that behaviours of research subjects do not change in the course of an investigation or when gathering data. The work, therefore, concludes that theoretical underpinning suggesting nonreactive or unobtrusive measures in pragmatically understanding people’s perception about an event is not to completely jettison the reactive measurements but served as a remedy associated with methodological weakness of reactive measures in comprehending social phenomenon

GLOBAL GOVERNANCE IN THE MIDST OF COVID-19: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECT

    No full text
The 2019 new Corona Virus outbreak and its effects on global governance are covered in this paper. The paper examines the professional warnings that were issued on or before 2019 regarding the potential pandemic outbreak, the reasons why these warnings were ignored, and the fallout from this disregard. The study emphasizes how critical it is to consider the threat posed by unconventional military security threats like the corona virus. The study\u27s demonstration of how states handled the corona virus outbreak independently rather than jointly revealed the weakness in the international system is similarly significant. It is obvious that a new chapter in the history of liberal internationalism is being written in the field of global governance. The populist philosophy of "my country first" is being adopted by nations today. This study demonstrates how seriously this mindset threatens international solidarity, stability, and global governance on a political, economic, and social level. The study links this issue to the worldwide economic crisis that many nations are currently experiencing as well as Donald Trump\u27s position on redefining America\u27s connections with other nations, particularly with its transatlantic allies

National Security Strategies: A Panacea To National Economic Development in Nigeria

Though managing security in multi-ethnic state like Nigeria is often an herculean task, the need for security become imperatives as the securitization is a strong panacea to the national economic development. This work posits that survival of a state to provide economic good to the citizenry largely depend on the secure environment conducive for investment. The work uses secondary sources of data as its methodology. It is found out that Nigeria insecure environment was grossly linked to poor leadership and corruption with impunity on the part of security stallholders. Huge amount of money that could have been channeled to national economic development has been allocated to security without positive result. This paper thus recommends that for Nigeria to have secure economic environment necessary for national economic development, corruption must squarely be fought in addition to ethic security agents among others

GOVERNANCE AND SECURITY IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA: A RELATIVE DEPRIVATION THEORY APPROACH

Attributable to the state as a sovereign entity is the provisions of both social and physical security to thecitizen living within the state. If this fundamental ingredient of a state is denied as a result of statefailure, the citizens would be desperate which in most cases lead to social deviance. This paper posit thatcontemporary security challenges in Nigeria where government is loosen some parts of its territory to theinsurgents and bandits is the function of state failure to provide socio-economic goods the citizens. Thepaper relied on primary and secondary materials as a source of data. With the help of relative deprivationtheory, it is the arguments of this paper that current security challenges in the country could not betamed if government does not address citizens social deprivation. Beyond military intervention in thecourse of the current insecurity in the country, the paper recommends socio-economic interventionamong other recommendations

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
