'The Cloud of Unknowing': its inheritance and its inheritors

    No full text
The thesis attempts a portrait of The Cloud in the context of its position in the history of Christian mysticism. That the anonymous work owed much to spiritual writers of the preceding twelve hundred years is not debatable; what it owed maybe slightly less obvious. The Cloud is essentially a work of Dionysian mysticism, and various writers within that tradition who may have influenced or affected the teaching of The Cloud are examined. At the same time, however, the anonymous writer owes much to the western tradition of Augustinian theology, and the role of this, complementary to the Dionysian mysticism, is also considered. In Chapter II we look at the theological doctrine underlying the mystical doctrine of the Cloud corpus. Chapter III has two major parts, both concerned with the influence of The Cloud on the subsequent development of spiritual writing in England. The first considers the relationship with Walter Hilton. The second examines aspects of Puritan thought which may indicate that the influence of The Cloud, after the Reformation, was not restricted to Catholic thought

What do alternative measures of comparative advantage reveal about the composition of developing countries'exports?

    No full text
Despite their extensive applications in research and policy studies, no product level comparisons had been made between Bela Balassa's"revealed"comparative advantage (RCA) index and indices associated with the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) that reflect the standard Hecksher-Ohlin theory of comparative advantage. The author conducted several empirical tests for developing countries'exports of manufactured products, partly to identify factors that often lead to differences between the two indices. The results show that products in which developing countries have achieved a revealed comparative advantage are highly concentrated in a broad group of labor-intensive products; for other items, their RCAs are generally below unity. Within the labor-intensive group, however, developing countries failed to develop a revealed comparative advantage for about half of the items. A regression model suggests that in the labor-intensive group, revealed comparative advantage falls as the requirements increase for natural resources, for physical capital, and for human capital - including higher per capita wages, and more professional or technical personnel.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Water and Industry,Inequality,Banks&Banking Reform

Vernacular architecture and “historical seismography”: an experience research

    No full text
The history of hearthquakes can be defined as a very ancient discipline, which roots are on the tales and on records of the most calamitous events whose evidence is not easy to be found because not written but handed down orally, and the history of seismology is a good example. The analysis of the historical archives and the carefull study of the projects concerning the territory and its structure, often reveals precious informations on events that involved the place, such as the most dangerous, i.e earthquakes, but little technical information about recovery or rebuilding is given in written documentation from the direct literature of the urban context and of the individual building is possible to deduce techiques and ways of the past used to inntervene to reply to the seismic needs of the build and from which the historic seismology originates from. The study of the history of earthquakes has become a systematic instruments to determine the areas where they can happen with a likely periodicity from the past century, and relates especially on historic seismology which has its historic reference store, even if it bases itself on oral sources. Our study, instead, based exclusively upon the analysis and the direct study of the architecture, aims to determinate the needs and the technical devices, peculiar to the art of building, but strictly connect to the local building culture of our territorial reference or research. The rich store of informations has allowed us to study different costructive typology, often determined by needs connected not only to the building tradition but also to the local seismic culture. In the areas exposed at high seismic risk, the regularity of the event can create a progressive rooting of the tecniques and behaviours leading to a clear protective view. When the system becomes part of the experience of the comunity, it stays in the people’s memory. The resident population are titular of their own seismic culture that generates non codified and non written rules but readable in the constructive characteristics of the buildings, in the general structure given by the territory. Every building bears witness to its own history and furnishes an enormous quantitaty of informations: the damage suffered, the repair work, intervention of prevention. A "global" local research and at the same time a systematic research of the frequencies of the constructive elements are developed. From this will of putting the basis for a systematic study of the “historical seismography” that promotes a technical normative of reference that is neither generic nor inducing inter-ventions little respectful of a context that only asks to be left in alone

In 2018 and 2019 three precious publications in periodicals published in Gdynia and Puck were devoted to abounding biograhy of Ludwik Habaj, a seaman born in Rzeszów in 1900. For no obvious reason the author of three articles passed in silence over L. Habaj’s service in the Maritime Civic Militia, as well as his achievement, i.e. rescue of paasengers and crew members of a ferry on December 24, 1945. The author of the present text wishes to bridge this gap and to honour a hero.W latach 2018–2019 ukazały się w periodykach wydawanych w Gdyni i Pucku cenne publikacje poświęcone bogatej biografii Ludwika Habaja, marynarza urodzonego w Rzeszowie w 1900 roku. Autor niniejszego szkicu pragnie wypełnić tę lukę i oddać cześć bohaterowi

This article centers on the literary achievements of preacher Antoni Węgrzynowicz (1658-1721) from the collection Nuptiae Agni . Gody Baranka apokaliptycznego…  (Krak.w 1711) – „Nuptials of the Apocalyptic Lamb” (transl.) – in which there are, among other things, a series of conceptual sermons – refer to the fragment of Apocalypse 21, 19-20, relates to the twelve precious stones being the foundations of the Heavenly Jerusalem, traditionally associated with the names of the apostles. The author presents spiritual content, ingeniously built on knowledge of natural sciences regarding the properties of precious stones, derived from the writings of past and contemporary naturalists, from encyclopedic texts, biblical commentaries, baroque symbolographic compendia, and specialized literature for church speakers. The article discusses these sources of knowledge and seeks to present the writing strategies used by Węgrzynowicz concerning the study of precious stones. This article centers on the literary achievements of preacher Antoni Węgrzynowicz (1658-1721) from the collection Nuptiae Agni . DEMAND FOR JEWELLERY: THE MAIN DRIVERS

    No full text
Jewellery made of precious stones and metals is a luxury item, referring to goods with excessive consumer properties. At the same time, the sphere of turnover of precious metals, precious stones (PMPS) and products made from them is of strategic importance for the formation and development of the state economy. Businesses operating in this sphere are subject to compulsory registration in a special state register. The government is interested in supporting the jewellery industry and increasing its turnover, which is directly dependent on the population’s demand for PMPS products.Popular demand, in turn, depends on many factors that have their own specificities in relation to the area under study. An assessment of the factors based on expert opinion, conducted by the author with interviews of a group of consumers, the study of scientific research materials and journalistic articles from various Internet resources, indicates the acceptable superiority of offers of jewellery made of precious stones and metals, focused on the potential increase in the possibilities of sunlight. The conclusions presented in the paper on the factors influencing demand are recommended for use in the development of business development strategies and may be useful in making decisions on state regulation of the sale of jewellery made from PMPS

Precious stones in Latin literary sources: from Pliny the Elder to Isidore from Seville

    No full text
Dokonując interpretacji opisów starożytnych kamieni, wykorzystuję wiedzę z zakresu współczesnej gemmologii, czyli nauki o kamieniach szlachetnych, i podejmuję się próby identyfikacji części z nich. W polskiej literaturze naukowej istniała dotychczas jedna praca, której autor, Stanisław Stawicki wykorzystał znajomość języków klasycznych i kultury antycznej i połączył je z wiedzą o kamieniach szlachetnych do analizy Papirusu Lejdeńskiego X i Papirusu Sztokholmskiego, poruszających tematykę wykorzystywania gemm w celach artystycznych. We wstępie do rozprawy opisuję swoje kwerendy i metodę pracy z kamieniami szlachetnymi oraz omawiam stan badań w Polsce. W rozdziale pierwszym wprowadzam terminy naukowe, przedstawiam historię gemmologii jako nauki sformalizowanej oraz jej starożytne korzenie. W rozdziale drugim prezentuję sylwetkę Pliniusza Starszego, a także „Historię naturalną” jako dzieło encyklopedyczne. Kolejno omawiam źródła Pliniusza i budowę 37 księgi encyklopedii. W rozdziale trzecim opowiadam o mało znanym Solinusie i roli jego dzieła w literackim łańcuchu Pliniusz-Solinus-Izydor. Następnie prezentuję metody pracy i źródła Izydora z Sewilli w rozdziałach „Etymologii” poświęconych kamieniom szlachetnym. The PhD thesis consists of two parts. In the first part I analyze the world of ancient precious stones, referring to three Latin source texts: 37 of the book "Natural History" by Pliny the Elder, selected fragments of the chorographic treatise "Collectanea rerum memorabilium" (also known as "Polyhistor" and "De mirabilis mundi") of Solinus and chapters 6-15 of the 16th book of "Etymology" by Isidore of Seville. When interpreting descriptions of ancient stones, I use my knowledge of modern gemology, i.e. the science related to precious stones, and I try to identify some of them. In the Polish academic literature there has been one work whose author, Stanisław Stawicki, used the knowledge of classical languages and ancient culture and combined it with the knowledge of precious stones for the analysis of Leiden X Papyrus and Stockholm Papyrus, dealing with the topic of using gems for artistic purposes. In the introduction to the dissertation I describe my queries and the method of working with precious stones and describe the state of research in Poland. In the first chapter I introduce scientific terms, I present the history of gemology as a formalized science and its ancient roots. In the second chapter I present the profile of Pliny the Elder, as well as "Natural History" as an encyclopaedic work. Then I focus on the sources of Pliny and the construction of the 37th encyclopaedia book. In the third chapter I talk about the little-known Solinus and the role of his work in the literary chain Pliny-Solinus-Isidore. Next, I present Isidore's methods of work and his sources in the chapters of "Etymology" devoted to precious stones. In the fourth chapter I describe the difficulties related to the identification of ancient gems. Among the species and varieties I have analyzed in detail are, for example: pearls, corals, ivory, agate, sardonyx, onyx, carnelian, sard, amethyst, beryls including emerald and other varieties, so called carbuncles, opals, rock-crystal, chrysolite, olivine, topaz, sapphire, lapis lazuli, jasper, chrysocolla, diamond, hematite, malachite, heliotrope, amber, turquoise and mysterious myrrhina stone. In the end I collect conclusions from this part of the work. The second part of the dissertation is the commented translation of 37 of the book "Natural History". The last full Polish translation of Pliny by Józef Łukaszewicz dates from 1845, so it is outdated and does not take into account the knowledge of gemology
