Freedom and the 'creative act' in the writings of Nikolai Berdiaev : an evaluation in light of Jürgen Moltmann's theology of freedom
This project revisits the work of Nikolai Berdiaev, one of the first Russian Silver Age religious philosophers to be widely read in the West. The focus of this research is his thought on freedom and the ‘creative act’. We will argue that Berdiaev’s vision of freedom contains two types of freedom – a freedom understood within the created order and a freedom ‘outside’ of creation. It will be shown that in the former type, the reader finds a nuanced and insightful multi-layered conception of human freedom, which offers intriguing possibilities for exploring freedom and its implications for humanity. It will also be demonstrated that this type of freedom is closely related to his innovative view of creativity. Berdiaev conceives of freedom and creativity as distinct concepts, and yet so integrally related that they are interdependent. In the latter type of freedom, the reader will encounter a highly speculative and original metaphysical view that attempts to explain freedom as non-determination and answer the challenges of theodicy, which, this research will maintain, fails to do.
This research will contend (contrary to Berdiaev’s own statements) that his thought is most comprehensible from a broadly theological perspective. This perspective will underscore the significant tension within his work that arises from his speculative metaphysics. Unlike earlier works on Berdiaev that glossed over this tension, we will attempt to ameliorate it by engaging Jürgen Moltmann’s theology of freedom. Moltmann’s theology will provide a number of ideas and concepts for an analysis, critique, and reconfiguration of Berdiaev’s vision. This reconfiguration will seek to remain faithful to Berdiaev’s core concerns, while providing a new interpretation of his thought that is relevant for a contemporary dialogue concerning the significance of freedom and creativity for the person and community in relation to God

The Vasiliologion of Nikolai Spafarii Milescu
AbstractThe Romanian writer Nikolae Milescu (Nikolai Gavrilovich Spafarii) was the author of several books designed for the tsar and the Russian court in the 1670's. Working under the patronage of Tsar Aleksei's favorite, Artamon Matveev, Spafarii composed an account of exemplary monarchs from the past called Vasiliologion. He presented ancient and Biblical monarchs as just and wise but also as great conquerors and builders of cities, even when they were pagans. His portrait of Russian monarchs was closer to traditional Orthodox conceptions, but still stressed military victory and building. Spafarii was one of the first writers in Russia to introduce the Aristotelian political terms, monarchy and aristocracy.

The Eucharistic Ecclesiology of Nikolai Afanasieff
U svakom slučaju, euharistijska ekleziologija N. Afanasijeva potiče ozbiljan pristup važnim teološkim i ekumenskim pitanjima. This paper presents the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nikolai Afanassieff, an Orthodox theologian. In the first part the author explains the term and meaning of Eucharistic ecclesiology in Afanassieff’s theological thought in light of the distinction between Eucharistic and universal ecclesiology, the relation between the local and universal Church, the idea of Church-in-Priority and the problem of primacy and autocephaly. In the second part the author presents criticism of Afanassieff’s ecclesiology given by two prominent Orthodox theologians Ioannis Zizioulas and Dumitru Staniloae, who have determined to a large extent the reception of Afanassief’s ideas in Orthodoxy. In the third part the author speaks about the renewed interest in the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nikolai Afanassieff, first through the proposals of the Orthodox theologian Radu Bordeianu and then through the analysis of a Catholic Anastacia Wooden. In any case, the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nicolai Afanassieff encourages a serious approach to important theological and ecumenical issues
Viy in Nikolai Gogol’s Novella and Related Mythological Creatures in Ukrainian Folklore
This article examines Ukrainian folkloric parallels to Viy, a character in the horror novella of the same name by Nikolai Gogol. It is a formidable chthonic, demonic creature whose eyelids cover the eyes and need to be lifted, and the gaze sees what is hidden from others. Although the writer claimed that this character, like the entire plot of the story, was taken from Ukrainian folklore, some modern researchers claim that Viy is the author’s own invention. This is contradicted by folkloric data, primarily Ukrainian lore. Demonic characters with different names but with the same appearance and very similar functions as Viy appear in Ukrainian folk tales, legends and beliefs recorded in the 19th and 20th centuries. The plots have various degrees of closeness to the plot of Gogol’s story, showing that Viy is an authentic figure from Ukrainian folklore
Comparison of Images of Russia in the Diaries and Epistolaries of Nikolai Turgenev
The report is devoted to the study of the image of Russia in the diaries and epistolaries of Nikolai Turgenev. Through the perception of a bright representative of the advanced noble youth of the early 19th century, the image of Russia, common in the Russian enlightened society of the era of sentimentalism, is studied. The report compares the image of Russia, which the author gives in his diaries, with the image reflected in letters to loved ones. In addition, the analysis of the image of Russia is given in the diary prose and letters of Nikolai Turgenev through comparison with the image of Western Europe, primarily Germany, where the author studied at the University of Göttingen
Qualitative model of high-Tc superconductivity
We suggest a qualitative model of a high-Tc superconductor, based on considerations of thermodynamics of phase transitions. As an example, we consider the Mott transition and classify 5 solid phases around it. In our model, a combined electronic and structural instability causes segregation into either neutral or charged phases. A charged precipitate with a quantized electric charge is a collective excitation of electrons, stabilized by a collective athermal displacement of ions; this local variation of the charge density, accompanied by a local lattice deformation, can behave as a quasi\-particle. A condensate of charged bosonic quasi\-particles is responsible for the superconductivity. This is a pre-print of the article Zarkevich, Nikolai A. "Qualitative model of high-Tc superconductivity." arXiv preprint arXiv:1707.00777 (2017).
