A Fuzzy Shape Specification System to Support Design for Aesthetics
A shape specification system based on fuzzy logic is proposed, which aims to facilitate designers in conceptual design stage by allowing them to specify and work with rough models in a more intuitive fashion. The system uses a 3D object representation called 'parametric geons' which provide both qualitative and quantitative descriptions, in addition to global shape constraints, via eight shape parameters. Shape descriptors and aesthetic descriptors are introduced and their fuzzy membership functions are constructed using results from subjective experiments on shape descriptions. Inference rules are then devised to link these descriptors with shape parameters. The system which models after designers' behaviour, allows designers' own aesthetic terms and interpretation of shapes to be added, and a library of successful designs with appropriate fuzzy descriptions to be constructed for later use
Pedagogical heritage Ya.B. Reznik (1892-1952)
Гончаров, Б.Kaгaн, І.
Гончаров, Б.Kaгaн, И.
It is established that among the well-known Ukrainian teachers of the first half of the 20th century, was the theoretical and practical experience of Yakov Borisovich Reznik (1892-1952) - the first doctor of pedagogical sciences in Ukraine (1940), the researcher of the problems of didactics, psychology and upbringing, the teacher-practitioner with his own understanding of the ways of reforming school education, the methodologist of primary and secondary education , the head of the research children's home, the author of many scientific works devoted to the actual problems of pedagogical theory and practice, a teacher, organizer of secondary and higher educational institutions of Ukraine.
The significance of his works is revealed: "The truth of history: The activity of the Jewish Cultural and Educational Organization" Cultural League (1918-1925) "(1995) M.Ribakov, the candidate of historical sciences, where the important role of Professor J.Reznik in the development of pedagogical science in Ukraine was stressed. Some data on scientific and pedagogical activity are given in the work of Zvi Gitelman "The Jew and Soviet Politics" (New York, 1972). Brief information about J. Reznik and his activity was prepared by M. Goncharov, B. Kagan, I. Kairov and M. Yarmachenko to reference and encyclopaedic publications ("Bibliographic Index" (1961), "Pedagogical Encyclopedia" (1966), "Biographical Dictionary of modern Yiddish literature "(New York, 1981)," The Pedagogical Dictionary "(2001)).
It is reported that J. Reznik left a significant scientific legacy, including textbooks, manuals, a number of articles on pedagogical topics in Ukrainian, Russian and Hebrew. But, unfortunately, most of his works are not yet ordered, not systematized, not analyzed and require study, generalization and critical rethinking. We made an attempt for the first time to analyze the scientific and pedagogical activity of J. Reznik

Mitochondrial respiratory gene expression is suppressed in many cancers
The fundamental metabolic decision of a cell, the balance between respiration and fermentation, rests in part on expression of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and coordination with expression of the nuclear genome (nuDNA). Previously we described mtDNA copy number depletion across many solid tumor types (Reznik et al., 2016). Here, we use orthogonal RNA-sequencing data to quantify mtDNA expression (mtRNA), and report analogously lower expression of mtRNA in tumors (relative to normal tissue) across a majority of cancer types. Several cancers exhibit a trio of mutually consistent evidence suggesting a drop in respiratory activity: depletion of mtDNA copy number, decreases in mtRNA levels, and decreases in expression of nuDNA-encoded respiratory proteins. Intriguingly, a minority of cancer types exhibit a drop in mtDNA expression but an increase in nuDNA expression of respiratory proteins, with unknown implications for respiratory activity. Our results indicate suppression of respiratory gene expression across many cancer types. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.21592.001Version of Recor
DEANS OF RUSSIA: WHAT ARE THEY?TEACHERS? SCIENTISTS? MANAGERS?
Dean! - is a magic word, that is used too often in the university. Someone is afraid of him, the others treats him as a defender. Everybody needs the dean - students and their parents, teachers and chairmen, pro-rectors and rectors, employers and journalists. What is he? A teacher or a scientist? Perhaps he is a manager, economist or legal expert? Professor S.D. Reznik, a famous teacher and scientist, the author of number of works about Management in the University, about the Dean's job

Thank you.Cellular metabolism is a complex network of biochemical reactions, whose regulation enables living cells to cope with variable environments and perturbations. Since metabolic regulation occurs at multiple time scales and involves diverse molecular mechanisms, understanding and manipulating the dynamics of metabolism in the cell constitutes an open challenge in systems biology. The work presented in this dissertation explores the coupled dynamics of metabolism and regulatory control using different theoretical and computational approaches.
First, I frame my work from the perspective of the multiple time scales along which regulatory processes unfold. In particular, I present three increasingly complex models of coupled metabolic-regulatory dynamics, ranging from single biochemical reactions, to a small hybrid metabolic-genetic oscillator, and finally to an entire genome-scale metabolic network. To deconvolve the distinct roles of metabolism and regulation in these models, I apply some classical tools from physics (variational calculus) and operations research (optimization theory). The results shed light on the interdependent role of structure and function in the design of metabolic systems, as well as on the contemporary challenge of integrating high-throughput data with complex metabolic models.
Next, I focus on the question of whether and how metabolic dynamics may be inferred directly from the architecture of the metabolic network itself, irrespective of regulation. In one project, I prove that the structure of a class of metabolic cycles endows them with stable equilibria, regardless of the choice of rate laws or kinetic parameters. A curious outcome of this proof are two theorems describing the location of the roots of a sum of polynomials. In a second project, I use high-throughput metabolomics data and the notion of flux imbalances in stoichiometric models of metabolism to calculate quantitative measures of growth-limitation. I then use these quantities to grossly describe the dynamics of intracellular metabolites following a perturbation.
Taken together, my results suggest possible routes for identifying fundamental principles of biological organization which may guide future efforts in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology
Ideology and Alphabets in the former USSR.
In 2002 the Russian parliament passed a law requiring all official languages within the Russian Federation to use the Cyrillic alphabet. The legislation caused great controversy and anger in some quarters, especially in Tatarstan, the Russian republic whose attempt to romanise the script for the Tatar language provoked the new law. This paper examines the background to these recent events in the former Soviet Union, showing how they provide a contemporary illustration of the ways that linguistic (in this case, orthographic) issues can interact with ideologies and discourses at the political and social levels. The paper takes an approach which treats orthography and script selection as social practices which are amenable to sociolinguistic analysis, even though they are more commonly modelled as autonomous systems (or “neutral technologies”) which can be detached from their social context (cf. Street's “ideological” and “autonomous” models of literacy). The article begins with a very brief overview of the early twentieth-century changes of script from Arabic to Roman and then to Cyrillic, which affected most of the Turkic languages, including Tatar, and an account of the trend to return to the Roman alphabet in the immediate post-Soviet period. It goes on to describe the circumstances of the decision by Tatarstan to introduce the script change, and the resulting backlash from the government of the Russian Federation, in the form of a new language law. It then goes on to analyse the discourses which underlie this story of rebellion and reaction. In particular, the following discourses are identified and discussed: unity and membership (the discourse of belonging), technology and globalisation, cultural heritage (change and permanence), Cyrillic as “defective”/Cyrillic as a conduit for Russian lexis, romanisation as a threat to the integrity of Russia and its language. It is noted that many of the discourses present in the Tatarstan case are also found in other debates over orthographies elsewhere
