    Direct and Indirect Influence of Altmetrics on Citation in Social Systems: Assessing a New Conceptual Model

    This study aimed to assess the paths through which save metrics (on CiteULike, Mendeley, and Figshare) and discussion metrics (on Twitter, Facebook, and Wikipedia) influence citation. This descriptive-correlation study investigates the relationships between different variables based on its proposed conceptual model. Systematic and stratified sampling was employed and, using the Cochrane formula, the sample size was determined to be 1892 articles. Data were collected using the PLOS altmetrics, and path analysis was administered to test the conceptual model by using AMOS software. The results convey that Mendeley was the most effective path resulting to citation. Mendeley has a positive and significant relationship with citation via save as an intermediator. Twitter also had a negative and significant relationship with citation via discussion as an intermediating factor. Yet, neither save metrics on CiteULike and Figshare nor discussion on Facebook and Wikipedia does create a path of influence on citation. Identifying the effective paths through which social networks affect citation via altmetrics and presenting a final model of those paths could enrich and expand the theoretical foundations in the field of altmetrics. Besides identifying the most effective social networks and paths for online scientific interactions that lead to citation, the implications of this research can provide deeper insights for policy makers, editors and scholars

    Research on alternative measures in the F1000 system with Google Scholar citation index

    The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between altmetrics measures of F1000 website and citation Indexes of Google scholar. Applied research and survey methods, citation analysis, and webometrics with descriptive analytical approach are used. The study population comprised 218 biomedical research papers have been indexed in F1000 system in the period 2012-2014. A sample of 100 research articles were purposely selected from F1000 system based on the purpose of the research. Variables associated with altmetrics measures were extracted from F1000 and variables associated with citation measures were from Google scholar. Data analysis was conducted by SPSS software version 16 using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of this study indicate a significant positive correlation between variables associated with altmetrics and citation measures. They also confirm a strong positive correlation between Altmetrics indicators. However, the measures of the number of the authors and the funding supply of the articles show no significant correlation with altmetrics and citation measures. So an Altmetrics measure presents a new way to measure the impact of writers and publications which is a complementary to traditional assessment indicators. The significant correlation between altmetrics and citation metrics indicate that combination of traditional and altmetrics indicators presents a more complete history of the writer or the article  which provides clear dimensions of scientific assessment of research

    Evaluation the predictive indicators of scientific impact to increase the citations of articles in scientific journals

    The aim of this study is to provide some criteria for reviewers in their process of evaluating the articles so as to help them predict future citations to these article based on their quality. This study deploys a descriptive - correlation and applied research. In this study, about 5 magazines as an example were selected among the Chemistry journals indexed in Scopus. Also among the 926 articles, 300 articles were examined stratified random sampling during the 2011 – 2015.The results indicated that "co-authorship" is the strongest predictor variable for predicting citation positively and significantly. Furthermore, variables of length of the article, number of references & H-index can also predict the citation Rate significantly. Along with the traditional criteria for evaluating article, the reviewers can also include other effective indicators in their evaluation process of articles, and, in turn, increase the visibility and citation rate of the articles. This makes it possible for the reviewers to deploy a reliable measuring tool for examining the quality of scholarly papers and predict the citation Rate

    Assessing the relationship between the alternative metrics of visibility and social bookmarking with citation index in PLOS Altmetrics

    This article aims to measure the relationship between metrics of visibility and bookmarking in social platforms (Citeulike, Mendeley and Figshare) with citation counts in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed central and Crossref. Current study is original in terms of objective and the data gathering scheme is descriptive of correlation type with a citation analysis approach. The population in this study is consists of 90,728 research papers which published in PLOS between 2009 and 2013. A sample of 1892 samples was chosen based on Cochran formula. The results showed that the visibility, Citeulike and Mendeley bookmarking counts have significant positive correlation with citations in all of the investigated systems. Conversely, social bookmarking counts on Figshare showed significant negative correlation with citations. Visibility metric has significant positive correlation with bookmarking counts in Citeulike and Mendeley, while it does not correlate with social bookmarking metric on Figshare. The results of this study suggest sharing scientific publications in social networks such as Mendeley, may increases the visibility and the future citations

    Prediction of information seeking behavior of Shiraz University graduate students based on the dimensions of goal orientations and creativity

    Purpose: The present study has been done with the goal to assessing the possibility of prediction of information seeking behavior of graduate students based on the dimensions of goal orientations and creativity. Method: Study sample consisted of 221graduate students from Shiraz University (134 girls and87boys) were selected with cluster sampling method. Gathering data tool consists of information seeking behavior questionnaires(Khosrowgerdy, Olumy, Naghshine&Mohseny,1388), goal orientation questionnaire designed by the researcher, and also multiple choice paper and pencil test (MPPT)questionnaire for measuring creativity((Abedy,1372) that were completed by students. To determine reliability of measures, Cronbach Alpha Coefficient and to examine validity, factor analysis methods were used. The test results asserted acceptable validity and reliability of instruments. Research data analyzed with Multiple Regressions Test. Results: Results of simultaneous multiple regressions showed that, a) all dimension of goal orientation was positive predictor of relevance judgment dimension of information seeking behavior. b) avoidance goal orientation dimension and elaboration dimension of creativity was positive and fluency dimension of creativity was negative predictor of time as a motivated factor dimension of information seeking behavior. c) learning goal orientation and avoidance goal orientation dimensions was positive predictor of confirm previous knowledge dimension of information seeking behavior. d) learning goal orientation dimension and originality dimension of creativity was positive predictor of creating new ideas dimension of information seeking behavior. e) Trying to search for information dimension of information seeking behavior only through learning goal orientation dimension is predicted as positive and significant. Conclusion :to attention on existence of positive and meaningful relationship between goal orientations, dimensions of creativity with information seeking behavior and possibility of prediction of information seeking behavior of graduate students by aforesaid psychological variants, can explain that success or un success in information seeking behavior of students and access to information and optimum work on researching functions are not only productive of students specially skills but also are impressible of psychological issues like goal orientations and creativity
