Mińska 15   Streszczenie Kluczowym wskaźnikiem fizycznej jakości gleby jest gęstość objętościowa, a zwłaszcza jej najbardziej znacząca wielkość, czyli gęstość naturalna (ρn). Gęstość naturalną w całym przedziale zmian kształtuje w największym stopniu granulometryczny wskaźnik g, wyrażany stosunkiem liczbowym frakcji o średnicy 0,5 – 0,1 mm do frakcji o średnicy poniżej 0,002 mm, korygowanym w przypadkach dużej zawartości  frakcji ϕ 0,1 – 0,02 mm. Na podstawie wielkości tego wskaźnika można ustalić rząd wielkości gęstości naturalnej (ρn) dla gleb o podobnej charakterystyce uziarnienia oraz w każdym indywidualnym przypadku, czyli warstwie pedonu, dokładną wielkość tej cechy.   Abstract Key indicator of the physical quality of the soil is bulk density, especially its most significant factor - natural bulk density of soil (ρn). Natural bulk density of soil for the whole range is formed in the greatest extent by granulometric index g, expressed in a relationship of fractions of diameter 0,5 – 0,1 mm and fraction of diameter less than 0,002 mm, corrected in the case of a high content of fraction ϕ 0,1 – 0,02 mm. On the basis of the size of this indicator the order of magnitude natural bulk density (ρn) can be determined for soils with a similar grain size and in each individual case, i.e. specified depth of soil profile, exact amount of this characteristic.   Słowa kluczowe: gęstość naturalna gleby, granulometryczny wskaźnik gęstości naturalnej gleby, zróżnicowanie uziarnienia gleb, grupa i podgrupa granulometryczna utworu glebowego.     Phase retrieval from multiple binary masks generated speckle patterns

    We present a reference-less and time-multiplexing phase retrieval method by making use of the digital micromirror device (DMD). In this method, the DMD functions not only as a flexible binary mask which modulates the optical field, but also as a sampling mask for measuring corresponding phases, which makes the whole setup simple and robust. The DMD reflection forms a sparse intensity mask in the pupil which produces speckle pattern after propagation. With the recorded intensity on the camera and the binary pattern on the DMD, the phase in all the ‘on’ pixels can be reconstructed at once by solving inverse problems with iterative methods, for instance using Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. Then the phase of the whole pupil can be reconstructed from a series of binary patterns and speckle patterns. Numerical experiments show the feasibility of this phase retrieval method and the importance of sparse binary masks in the improving of convergence speed.Team Raf Van de Pla

    Light-sheet optimization for microscopy

    Aberrations, scattering and absorption degrade the performance light-sheet fluorescence microscopes (LSFM). An adaptive optics system to correct for these artefacts and to optimize the light-sheet illumination is presented. This system allows a higher axial resolution to be recovered over the field-of-view of the detection objective. It is standard selective plane illumination microscope (SPIM) configuration modified with the addition of a spatial light modulator (SLM) and a third objective for the detection of transmitted light. Optimization protocols use this transmission light allowing the extension the depth-of-field and correction of aberrations whilst retaining a thin optical section.Team Raf Van de Pla

    A refocusing mechanism for a laser satellite communication terminal

    There is an ever-increasing demand for high data transfer rates. Laser satellite communication is a promising technology which offers high data rates and more secure links than the mature radio frequency (RF) communication. To make a laser communication terminal market viable it must be low size, weight and power (SWaP). The telescope drives the volume of the terminal. Making the telescope more compact with high magnification imposes stricter tolerances. A solution to alleviate these tolerances is to use a refocusing mechanism (RFM) to align the telescope in space after launch. In this project, a refocusing system is designed. This comprises of making system level choices like where to place the mechanism, how to close the loop and how to use the onboard detectors. All these choices lead to the requirements for the RFM. Further, a mechanism is designed that fulfills the requirements. In addition, mechanical and thermal FEM simulations are carried out to show that the RFM survives launch and can work in the challenging thermal environment.Mechanical Engineering | High-Tech Engineerin

    Adaptive optics in digital micromirror based confocal microscopy

    This proceeding reports early results in the development of a new technique for adaptive optics in confocal microscopy. The term adaptive optics refers to the branch of optics in which an active element in the optical system is used to correct inhomogeneities in the media through which light propagates. In its most classical form, mostly used in astronomical imaging, adaptive optics is achieved through a closed loop in which the actuators of a deformable mirror are driven by a wavefront sensor. This approach is severely limited in fluorescence microscopy, as the use of a wavefront sensor requires the presence of a bright, point like source in the field of view, a condition rarely satisfied in microscopy samples. Previously reported approaches to adaptive optics in fluorescence microscopy are therefore limited to the inclusion of fluorescent microspheres in the sample, to use as bright stars for wavefront sensors, or time consuming sensorless optimization procedures, requiring several seconds of optimization before the acquisition of a single image.We propose an alternative approach to the problem, implementing sensorless adaptive optics in a Programmable array microscope.     Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux pour Casanova: Chemical- and bio-analysis of his Memoirs

    The original manuscript of Casanova's Memoirs is stored at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. We have gained access to it and explored the surfaces of chapters one and two (via the ethylene vinyl acetate [EVA] film technology, i.e., of diskettes of ethylene vinyl acetate with embedded strong cation and anion exchangers and C8 resins) in search of potential diseases of the author, especially of the gonorrhea bacterium, since Casanova reported that he had several bouts of this pathology along his adventurous life. Although the bacterium was not found, we have detected high levels of HgS as red spots along the lines of the manuscript, suggesting that Casanova was using this chemical as a cure for his venereal disease. Additionally, among the several bacteria identified on the surface via mass spectrometry, we could detect traces of Streptococcus uberis, a typical animal infection, found also in humans, together with a few strains of Lactobacilli, probably present in his saliva. Abstract We investigate the influence of Cu substitution, on the coercivity and magnetic viscosity, in the ternary system GdCo5−xCux (x=0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5) with different field sweep rates. All samples have been studied in the as cast state and crystallize in a single phase CaCu5 structure. With Cu addition, the coercivity was 10 times enhanced for x =1.5. The behavior of the coercivity Hc against field sweep rate, dH/dt, shows that the GdCo5−xCux system exhibits only a small magnetic viscosity effect, a desirable property for magnetic dynamic applications under high magnetic field

    Characterization and closed-loop AO performance of a liquid deformable mirror

    Closed-loop adaptive optical correction using a deformable mirror based on the total internal reflection (TIR) from an electrostatically deformed liquid-air interface was performed on a collimated beam of a HeNe-laser that was aberrated by a rotating phase disk.
