Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

An Overview on the Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Techniques

Natural disasters and their consequences have considerable and destructive effects on human life, properties, infrastructures, and, of course, on environment. One of the most important natural hazards, landslide plays a very important role in these effects throughout the world. Therefore, many countries, particularly the developed ones, invest huge amount of money either in mitigation or in prevention of landslides. The first, and probably the most important, stage of mitigation and/or prevention efforts is to assess landslide susceptibility by obtaining data related to landslides, i.e. preparation of landslide inventory and database. If taken into consideration, results of these assessments, i.e. landslide susceptibility maps, will provide useful information and economic benefits for urban planning, development plans, engineering applications, land use potential planning, and so on. When international scientific literature related to landslide assessments is examined, there has been an increasing interest in landslide susceptibility mapping studies in the last decades, instead of evaluating hazard and/or risk. Particularly, in recent years, depending upon the breakthroughs in computer technology, GIS (Geographic Information System), and RS (Remote Sensing) techniques, very important developments were achieved in these studies. This can be concluded as one of the most promising efforts with respect to combat with natural hazards since they opened wide range of opportunities for analyzing, evaluating, and assessing earth processes, notably for landslides. Thus, there are a multitude of studies carried out by different researchers in different parts of the world with the aid of these technological items. In this study, it was aimed at assessing landslide susceptibility techniques by means of a detailed literature survey based on an overview including twenty years' experiences. The techniques were categorized into two distinct groups such as qualitative and quantitative ones, and briefly examined individually. By doing so, a historical development of the techniques and actual trends in landslide susceptibility assessments were evaluated. It was revealed that some traditional methods seemed to have disappeared, while the new ones, particularly included in the GIS software, became very popular. However, at present, there seems to be no agreement on these techniques which can be the most effective one among the researchers

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Assessment of landslide susceptibility for a landslide-prone area (north of Yenice, NW Turkey) by fuzzy approach

    No full text
Regional landslide susceptibility assessments pose complex problems. To solve these problems, numerous approaches, such as statistical analysis, geotechnical engineering approach, geomorphologic approach and fuzzy logic, have been employed. However, all the available methods for regional landslide susceptibility assessments have some uncertainties due to a lack of knowledge and variability, Minimizing these uncertainties provides realistic approaches. Use of the fuzzy logic approach to produce a landslide susceptibility map of a landslide-prone area in NW Turkey is the main purpose of the present study. For this purpose, the study includes five main stages, these being the preparation of a landslide inventory of the study area, the application of factor analysis, the extraction of fuzzy if-then rules, the use of a geographical information system, and the control of the reliability of the resulting landslide susceptibility map. Slope angle, slope aspect, land use, weathering depth, water conditions and topographical elevation were considered as landslide conditioning factors for the study area. A total of 23 if-then rules was extracted from the field data. Employing these rules, fuzzified index maps representing each parameter were obtained. Finally, combining these maps, the landslide susceptibility map of the area was prepared. When compared with the landslide susceptibility map, the landslides identified in the area were found to be located in the very high- and high-susceptibility zones. As far as the performance of the fuzzy approach for processing is concerned, the images appear to be quite satisfactory, the zones determined on the map being zones of relative susceptibility

Determination of coal rank by fuzzy logic: A case study of coal from Central Anatolia, Turkey

Koyunagili coalfield in the Beypazari basin of the Central Anatolia was investigated and coal ranks were determined using fuzzy Mamdani model based on ASTM coal rank classification. This is a pilot study to investigate the applicability of the fuzzy model to determine the ranking of any coal seam. The Koyunagili coalfield, which is located at the southern part of the Beypazari basin, consists of the late Miocene coal seam within the tuffaceous rocks. The mineable coal seam is split by a 0.5-0.55 m thick clayey limestone into the upper (1.2-1.3 m thick) and lower (0.4 m thick) benches. A total of 28 profile coal samples from underground mines were collected. The samples have an average of 30.9% moisture (as-received), 23% ash yield, and 2.9% total sulphur and 4167 kcal/kg gross calorific value on an air-dried basis. Mean random reflectance values of huminite have an average of 0.34%, and show no differences across the coalfield. Coal ranking has been determined by the fuzzy Mamdani model. During processing, fixed carbon content (FCC), volatile matter values (VMV), calorific value (CV), and vitrinite/huminite reflectance (Ro %) parameters are inputs, and a total of 10 rules are used for the model. Modeling results are consistent with the previous studies

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
