An examination of the implementation process of science integrated robotic coding activities with gifted students
Her birey farklı özelliklerle dünyaya gelmektedir. Every individual is born with different characteristics. These characteristics determine many aspects of individuals, even shaping their learning. One of the most prominent of these characteristics is giftedness. It is generally known that gifted students exhibit advanced learning performance compared to their peers. Therefore, gifted students often come to the school environment with skill sets that are either already evident or waiting to be discovered beyond their peers. In Türkiye, children identified as gifted continue their education in their regular schools and attend Science and Art Centers for extensive training during their after-school hours. Teachers exhibit different experiences in determining what to do to support the development of these gifted students, especially by using interdisciplinary approaches and differentiated educational strategies to continue classroom instruction. In literature related to gifted students' science achievements, robotic technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches databases such as TR Dizin, YÖK Tez, ERIC, etc., it was found that there are limited studies on the use of robotic technologies to support gifted students in science classes. It was concluded that using robotic technologies, interdisciplinary and context-based educational approaches can positively affect classroom instruction for gifted students to have better science grades. In this research, the use of robotic technologies and differentiated educational strategies in reaching better academic achievement of gifted students in science programs has been associated with enriching the learning process. In this way, the general state of robotic activities that take an interdisciplinary approach involving multiple skill sets and fields related to gifted students has been evaluated. It has been recognized that activities containing practical skills and experiential learning are essential for achieving permanent learning and skill acquisition. Robotic activities designed for permanent learning and skill acquisition have been structured according to the interests and skill sets of the students. Objectives suitable for robotic technologies were determined after scanning the Science Curriculum, and robotic activities were developed by associating them with units and subject domains. Observation and focus group interview questions were used in the study. Expert opinions were obtained when preparing observation and focus group interview questions, and relevant revisions were made. The researcher's journal supported the data, and student products were included in the data analysis following the focus group interviews. The data were evaluated through content analysis. Focus group interviews were conducted with twelve gifted students. The application process lasted six weeks and was implemented in a Science and Art Center. Information was provided to the participating students about the process, and the student's opinions about the activities were gathered through focus group interviews. The interviews were conducted in 6-member groups at the end of each activity set. The teachers filled out observation forms separately for each student throughout the training. Focus group interviews were conducted at the end of each activity set to evaluate the activities' general process and effectiveness. It was understood in the research that students are more interested in educational content covering interdisciplinary areas, enriched and differentiated methods generally increase participation in the class; group work discipline is more conveniently granted, they can come up with different solutions to problems, they can relate problem situations to daily life context and offer solutions, robotic teaching materials contribute positively to the teaching and learning process. Success can be further improved by including different skill areas, such as robotics, in the process. Therefore, the use of interdisciplinary approaches in classroom instruction could facilitate reaching the objectives more conveniently in the Science Curriculum within the scope of this study
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Bağlam temelli yaklaşımın 9. sınıf öğrencilerinin temizlik maddeleri konusunu anlamalarına ve çevreye karşı tutumlarına etkisinin incelenmesi.
The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of context based instruction over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 9th grade students’ understanding of cleaning materials topic and their attitudes toward environment. Moreover students’ science process skills were measured for using as a covariate. Participants were 222 ninth grade students from eight classes in two different types of high schools in Ankara. Experimental group students were instructed with context based instruction and control group students were instructed with traditionally designed instruction through five weeks. Cleaning Materials Achievement Test and Attitudes toward Environment Scale were used as pre and post tests. Science Process Skills test was used only as a pretest. MANCOVA technique was used as a statistical analysis procedure. According to statistical analyses, there was a significant mean difference with respect to context based instruction and traditionally designed instruction on cleaning materials topic in favor of experimental group and no significant difference with respect to attitude toward environment. There was no significant mean difference with respect to school type in both Cleaning Materials Achievement Test scores and Attitude toward Environment Scale scores. Beside, science process skills were a strong predictor for understanding the cleaning materials topic. Four focus groups were conducted separately regarding the students’ career choices after the treatment to have an idea over the quality of the instruction in experimental group. Focus group results revealed that students were appreciated and more motivated with context based instructional design.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
