No full textThe expression of the vesicular glutamate transporter VGLUT1 in the rat neocortex was studied during postnatal development using immunocytochemistry and Western blotting. At all ages, VGLUT immunoreactivity is localized to puncta that coexpress the presynaptic marker synaptophysin. VGLUT1 immunoreactivity is faint at birth, increases in the subplate during the first postnatal week, invades the supragranular layers in the second week and reaches the adult pattern at P20-P30. Its spatial and temporal maturation patterns suggest that VGLUT1 may be the vesicular transporter in developing corticocortical connections

No full textLight and electron microscopic immunocytochemical techniques and Western blotting were used to investigate the postnatal development of the vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT) in the rat somatic sensory cortex.
VGAT immunoreactivity was low at birth, it increased gradually through the first and second weeks of life and achieved the adult pattern during the third week. At postnatal day (P)0-P5, VGAT immunoreactivity was associated exclusively to fibers and puncta. Electron microscopic studies performed at P5 showed that all identified synaptic contacts formed by VGAT-positive axonal swellings were of the symmetric type and that a substantial proportion of the boutons appeared not to have formed synapses. From P10 onward, labeled puncta were both scattered in the neuropil and in apposition to unstained cellular profiles; VGAT was also expressed in few GABAergic cell bodies. Western blottings at the same postnatal ages revealed a 55-kDa band whose intensity was weak at PO (17% of adult), it increased constantly until P15 (P2: 35%; P5: 44%; P10: 68%; P15: 97%), and then leveled off.
Overall, the present results show that during neocortical development the expression of VGAT slightly precedes the complete maturation of inhibitory synaptogenesis and suggest that it may contribute to the formation of neocortical GABAergic circuitry
Vesicular monoamine transporter 2 expression in enteric neurons and enterochromaffin-like cells of the rat
No full textThe cellular localization of the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) in the rat digestive tract was investigated with immunohistochemistry. VMAT2-immunoreactivity (IR) was localized to neurons and fibers of enteric and pancreatic ganglia, to processes supplying the gut wall, the pancreas and blood vessels, and to enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells in the gastric corpus, which contained calbindin-IR. Few VMAT2-IR cells were also found in the gastric antrum, but they did not contain gastrin-IR. VMAT2-IR was expressed in extrinsic sympathetic fibers as demonstrated by the elimination of a portion of VMAT2-IR processes by sympathectomy. The VMAT2-IR pattern is consistent with the overall distribution of biogenic amine cell groups in the digestive tract. Our results provide further evidence that VMAT2 is the vesicular amine transporter responsible for accumulation of monoamines into secretory vesicles of monoaminergic neurons and ECL cells

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
