Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2013.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. This dissertation is composed of three essays that describe and test theories on the sources and effects of volunteer mobilization in peer production. The first essay is a qualitative analysis of seven attempts to create English-language online collaborative encyclopedia projects started before January 2001, when Wikipedia was launched. Analyzing data from interviews of these Wikipedia-like projects' initiators, along with extensive archival data, I offer a set of three propositions for why Wikipedia, similar to previous efforts and a relatively late entrant, attracted a community of hundreds of thousands while the other projects did not. In the second essay, I use data from the Scratch online community -- a large website where young people openly share and remix animations and games -- to present evidence of a trade-off between "generativity" (i.e., qualities of work products likely to attract follow-on contributors) and the originality of the derivative work products that follow. In the third essay, I consider the relationship between volunteer mobilization and governance in peer production organizations. Although large successful peer production projects have inspired scholars and social movements, I use longitudinal data of internal processes drawn from a population of wikis to show that, like other democratic organizations, peer production projects exhibit governance consistent with Robert Michels' "Iron Law of Oligarchy."by Benjamin Mako Hill.Ph. Spatio-temporal variation in size-structured populations using fishery data: an application to shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the Pacific Ocean

    No full text
We develop a length-disaggregated spatio-temporal delta-generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and apply the method to fishery-dependent catch rates of shortfin mako sharks in the North Pacific. The spatio-temporal model may provide an improvement over conventional time-series and spatially stratified models by yielding more precise and biologically interpretable estimates of abundance. Including length data may provide additional information to better understand life history and habitat partitioning for marine species. Nominal catch rates were standardized using a GLMM framework with spatio-temporal and length composition data. The best fitting model showed that most hotspots for “Immature” shortfin mako occurred in the coastal waters of Japan, while hotspots for “Subadult and adult” occurred in the offshore or coastal waters of Japan. We also found that size specific catch rates provide an indication that there has been a recent increasing trend in stock abundance since 2008.The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page. Impact of the Stiffness Characteristics of Wrapped Composite Joints on Eigenfrequencies of Wind Turbine Jacket Support Structures

    No full text
This report investigates the influence of joint stiffness on the eigenfrequencies of offshore wind turbine supporting jacket structures. The joint is investigated individually, within the context of a jacket structure, and within the context of the entire offshore wind turbine structure. These analyses were specifically conducted for the case of a 10MW wind turbine jacket support structure. This report aims to present an analysis method that can represent the joints of jacket support structures for offshore wind turbines with high fidelity while also ensuring low computational cost during the analyses. The joint stiffness is captured through an implementation of joint submodelling by applying the Craig-Bampton reduction technique. Along with this, the report serves to provide a comparison of innovative wrapped composite joints and traditional welded joints when applied to a 10MW wind turbine. The wrapped composite joint was developed by Dr. Marko Pavlović at the Delft University of Technology, and it was investigated due to its superior fatigue performance compared to welded joint alternatives. Two sets of analyses were conducted: the jacket analysed by itself, and the jacket analysed along with the tower, turbine, and piles (to be referred to as the ”offshore wind turbine”). Natural frequency analyses were conducted for the jacket and for the offshore wind turbine for the different joint types. It was found that for the jacket and for the entire offshore wind turbine, the models with welded joints had the lowest natural frequencies, the models with wrapped composite joints had the second lowest natural frequencies, and the models with rigid joints had the highest natural frequencies when compared to their respective counterparts. In conclusion, both the application of the wrapped composite joints and the application of the analysis method of submodelling joints of the jacket are beneficial for solving issues related to the construction of jacket support structures for large wind turbines.Civil Engineerin

The definitive version was published in Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK 83 (2003): 1347-1350, doi:10.1017/S0025315403008798.Trophic positions (TP) were estimated for the blue shark (Prionace glauca), shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus), thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus), and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) using stable isotope ratios of carbon ([delta]13C) and nitrogen ([delta]15N). The basking shark had the lowest TP (3·1) and [delta]15N value (10·4‰), whereas the thresher shark had the highest values (4·5, 15·2‰). Mako sharks showed considerable variation in TP and isotopic values, possibly due to foraging from both inshore and offshore waters. Thresher sharks were significantly more enriched in [delta]15N than blue sharks and mako sharks, suggesting a different prey base. The [delta]13C values of thresher sharks and mako sharks varied significantly, but neither was significantly different from that of blue sharks. No statistical differences were found between our TP estimations and those derived from published stomach contents analyses, indicating that stable isotope data may be used to estimate the trophic status of sharks. This work was supported by National Marine Fisheries Service Grant NA16MF1323 to M.E.L

Starting point of this dissertation is in hypothesis that the presence of aesthetic consciousness in the architecture of analyzed objects means the existence of aesthetic consciousness of the authors and thus the existence of creative processes in the authors-creators of the architectural work. This is followed by the assumption that the existence of creative processes means an articulated use of certain (targeted) aesthetic elements indicating the presence of aesthetic consciousness. It follows from the above that, if present, a) the articulated use of targeted aesthetic elements, b) the creative process and c) aesthetic consciousness are always in an inseparable causal connection. Further, this dissertation analyzes and presents a recognized causal link: after an overview of observational aesthetic elements, it focuses on experiential aesthetic elements, the existence of which implicates the presence of the author’s aesthetic consciousness, as well as the existence of creative process within the author (creator of the object from the analytical architectural sample). More specifically, this dissertation explores and presents the use of experiential aesthetic elements: 1) aesthetic intent, 2) intuition, 3) imagination and 4) speculative thinking through the display, systematization and evaluation of all 31 public buildings of the “Bulevar oslobodjenja” Boulevard in Novi Sad, Serbia. The analysis of the mentioned architectural/urban sample, along with an evaluation of employed (experiential) aesthetic aspects, demonstrate not only the presence of aesthetic consciousness, but also its level in the author and thus the quality level of the architecture from this period of time. By emphasizing the great responsibility of architects/artists and professionals as creators of society, this dissertation is expected to contribute to the theoretical and practical comprehensive study of aesthetics, aesthetic conciseness and creative processes in architecture (in the case at hand shown through the aesthetical analysis of the architecture of the “Bulevar oslobodjenja” Boulevard in Novi Sad, Serbia), as well as to the scientific description and explanation of contemporary architecture of the second half of the twentieth century and the first decade of the twenty-first century in Serbia

Architectural communication forms of cultural centers in Montenegro in the second half of the twentieth century

This paper offers an analysis of architecture as a cultural phenomenon which communicates in several different ways. An attempt was made at elaborating the term architectural communication which is based on the theory of information, semiotic postulates, in particular with Umberto Eco (architectural denotation and connotation) and definitions of communication propounded by contemporary communicology. Architectural communication was analyzed through three types of relations which an edifice establishes with its environment: with the context (both social and physical), with users (utilization of architecture) and with the author/architect (architecture as a knowledge transmission). In the “building-social context” relationship the connotative meanings prevail, while information related to the idea, construction and subsequent alterations to an architectural edifice is conveyed. The “buildingphysical context” relationship is further analyzed in the light of intra and extra activity achieved by the architectural edifice with its physical environment. The analysis of “building-user” relationship is focused on dynamic denotation of segments of utilitarian space (denotative meanings). The analysis of architecture as a “field of knowledge production” – “building-author/architect” relation – singles out those authors whose works made a special and innovative contribution in the field of architectural theory and practice. Thus defined forms of architectural communication were used for the analysis of cultural centers which were constructed in Montenegro in the second half of the Twentieth Century, in the era of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Twenty seven buildings in nineteen towns and townships across Montenegro were analyzed, namely: community cultural centers, cinemas, memorial centers, revolution memorial centers, art galleries, youth centers, theaters and Yugoslav National Army cultural centers
