Scalelength of 30000 SDSS disc galaxies (Fathi+, 2010)

    No full text
Disc scalelength (h) for 30000 galaxies from the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7, in the r-band. Also included is the Asymmetry parameter for each galaxy. Virtual Observatory methods and tools were used to define, retrieve and analyze the images for this unprecedentedly large sample classified as spiral galaxies in the LEDA catalogue. These parameters are also available for all other SDSS bands (u,g,i,z), and they can be retrieved from the Author. An extensive discussion about the errors involved in the derived parameters can be found in Fathi et al. (2010MNRAS.406.1595F) and Fathi (2010ApJ...722L.120F) (1 data file)

A model scale study of single vertical pile groups under general planar loads

    No full text
An experimental study of the problem of vertical single piles and vertical pile groups subjected to general planar loads has been carried out. The pile models, machined from Aluminium tube and equipped with strain gauged load cells, were 0.476 in. diameter. Two different pile lengths of 14.28 in. and 23.8 in., provided pile length to diameter ratio of 30 to 50. Single piles and groups of 4 and 9 piles car: investigated at different spacings, S/D = 2.5 and 5. The soil used ~as Kaolin. Driving and loading-rigs for installing and test loading the piles were designed and manufactured. The following is investigated experimentally,(a) The validity of analytical solutions, based on linear elastic theory, for analysing pile-soil systems.(b) The distribution of axial loads and bending moments along the piles in the group, due to applied vertical and horizontal loads and moments.(c) The distribution of axial forces and bending moments between the piles in each group and on the pile cap due to the general eccentric planar loads.22224ii(d) Determination of the working load stiffness matrix of both single piles and groups of piles from which the vertical and horizontal displacement ratios and the rotation ratio can be calculated.(e) Assessment of the mean soil shear modulus and its correlation with the undrained cohesive strength of the soil. (f) The effect of pile installation on the adjacent soil. (g) Assessment of the reinforcing effect of existing piles on others whilst they were being installed in order to shed some light on the problem of pile group interaction during installation and soil heave effects.(h) The interaction effect resulting from. loading one pile of a group after the others were in position.(i) A study of the drained ultimate load capacity of the individual piles.Additionally a numerical solution of the problem of laterally loaded single piles was completed using transfer matrix technique</p

Foam cobordism and the Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant

    Get PDF
This is the first in a series of papers where scissor congruence and K-theoretical invariants are related to cobordism groups of foams in various dimensions. A model example is provided where the cobordism group of weighted one-foams is identified, via the Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant, with the first homology of the group of interval exchange automorphisms and with the Zakharevich first K-group of the corresponding assembler. Several variations on this cobordism group are computed as well.Comment: 38 pages, many figure

Optimal depletion of non-renewable resources with special reference to the oil resources

    No full text
The economic resources can be classified, according to their renewability, as non-renewable and renewable resources. In the present thesis an attempt was made to study the first category. Particular attention has been given to the underdeveloped economies in the framework of international trade. Careful consideration has been given to practical and realistic assumptions. The relationship between development programmes and the optimal paths of the non-renewable resources was considered as well as the consumption, the imports, the exports ... etc.Three kinds of approaches were adopted, the welfare maximization, the consumers surplus and the profit maximization and the relation between these alternatives was established. It was discovered, in general, that the consumption must increase as must the price of the non-renewable resources at home. Abroad, the direction of the prices depends on the elasticity of the foreign demand. When the foreign demand is elastic the prices must increase and decrease when it is inelastic. When profit maximization was considered, it was discovered that the price of the resources must increase both at home and abroad. When the foreign demand is inelastic increasing resources prices satisfy the profit maximization but does not satisfy the welfare maximization unless investment is considered abroad.</p

Growth estimates on optimal transport maps via concentration inequalities

    Get PDF
We give an alternative proof and some extensions of results of Carlier, Figalli and Santambrogio on polynomial upper bounds on the Brenier map between probability measures under various conditions on the densities. The proofs are based on the monotonicity of the map and various concentration inequalities, as already used by Colombo and Fathi to prove quadratic growth for transport maps from the standard Gaussian onto log-concave measures

Tulisan ini mengeksplorasi pemikiran Fathi Osman tentang Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM) dari karyanya “Islam and Human Rights: The Challenge to Moslims and the World”, dalam Rethinking Islam And Modernity Essays in Honour of Fathi Osman, Editor Abdel Wahab El-Affandi, (London: The Islamic Foundation in association with The Maghrib Centre For Research and Translation, 2001).

Synergistic development of an engineered biodegradable theranostic probe and lymph node organ-on-a-chip to study nanoparticle-lymphatic interactions

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in controlling immune response. Despite this, cancer often reshapes the lymphatic microenvironment and metastasizes into lymph nodes. Theranostic (therapeutic + diagnostic) nanoparticles have been used in a variety of applications, including the detection and treatment of cancer metastases in lymph nodes. However, accumulation in the liver remains a major concern with any nanoparticle-based intervention. We have developed biodegradable nanoparticles made of biliverdin, an endogenous fluorophore that results from the breakdown of hemoglobin. We demonstrated the degradation of biliverdin nanoparticles (BVNPs) in the presence of biliverdin reductase, as well as the use of BVNPs in photoacoustic imaging of sentinel lymph nodes. Fundamental studies on BVNPs demonstrated shifts in their spectral properties as a response to various stimuli, including pH changes, metal chelation, and UV irradiation. BVNPs loaded with doxorubicin (Dox-BVNPs) were used for treatment of triple-negative breast cancer. BVNPs were further modified via metal chelation for use as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent. Finally, hybrid biliverdin-silica particles were developed for use in fluorescence imaging in the near-infrared I and II windows. At the same time, microfluidic models were created to recapitulate the lymph node tissue microenvironment. We first developed a lymphatic vessel on-a-chip that achieved long-term culture of primary human lymphatic endothelial cells (HLECs) under gravity-driven flow. We then developed a lymphatic system on-a-chip, comprised of multiple units that each model the lymph node subscapsular sinus, high endothelial venules, and lymph nodules. This device allows for the exploration of transport of nanoparticles, cancer cells, and immune cells to and from lymph nodes.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-08-01The student, Parinaz Fathi, accepted the attached license on 2020-05-27 at 09:47.The student, Parinaz Fathi, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2020-05-27 at 10:25.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2020-06-17 at 15:05.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15422 on 2020-10-02 at 15:48:56Made available in DSpace on 2020-10-07T22:48:04Z (GMT).
