Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
INHIBITION OF INFLAMMATORY ANGIOGENESIS IN RATS BY LOCO-REGIONAL ADMINISTRATION OF HYDROCORTISONE AND PROTAMINE
We have studied the antiangiogenetic effects of hydrocortisone and protamine given intra-arterially. The cornea of male, Sprague-Dawley rats were cauterized with silver nitrate. The following treatments were given : 30 mu g hydrocortisone topical (t.p.), b.i.d., 50 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally (i.p.) or intra-arterially (i.a.), 10 mg/kg/day protamine i.p. or i.a. Saline was administered to the control groups. In separate experiments we also evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of hydrocortisone, i.p., on the cauterized corneas. Five days after cauterization, the animals were killed, exsanguinated and India ink was injected to show the network of neovessels. The percentage area of the cornea covered by neovessels was measured morphometrically and evaluated statistically. Hydrocortisone t.p. (-84%), i.a. (-60%) and protamine i.a. (-44%) significantly inhibited angiogenesis in the cauterized cornea. Either drugs, i.p., had any antiangiogenetic effects, but hydrocortisone significantly reduced cell infiltration of the corneas. The results suggest that locoregional administration of antiangiogenetic drugs might be clinically useful
Chylous ascites secondary to B-cell non Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
In the present article we describe a patient with AIDS and chylous ascites secondary to B-cell non Hodgkin's lymphoma.
A 43 years old homosexual HIV-positive man. Complained of abdominal fullness, diarrhea and a rapidly increase in abdominal girth of 1 week duration.
A diagnostic paracentesis was performed and revealed a milky fluid with high triglyceride levels.
All blood tests and analysis of the peritoneal fluid with polymerase chain reaction for DNA sequence of broad-range bacterial Post Voiding Residual volume, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Kaposi Sarcoma associated Herpes virus and Epstein Barr Virus were negative. CT scan did not demonstrate any evidence for cancer.
An exploratory laparotomy was thus performed. A mass spreading along the mesenteric route to the omentum was found and a debulking resection was performed. The final pathology report was of diffuse, CD20-positive, CD3-negative, Epstein Barr Virus-negative, large B-Cell non Hodgkin's lymphoma. Subsequently, he underwent five cycles of CHOP (cyclofosfamide, doxorubicin, vincristin, prednison) chemotherapy with further partial regression of the abdominal tumour. Five months after the initial diagnosis of lymphoma, the patient relapsed and was treated with high-dose BEAM (carmustine, etoposide, cytosine, arabinoside, melphalan) chemotherapy followed by CD34 stem-cell transplantations salvage therapy. This notwithstanding, the patient died due to intestinal secondary to tumor relapse 2 months later
Gastric outlet obstruction due to inflammatory fibroid polyp
INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) is a rare mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. The lesion is characterized by spindle-shaped stromal cells and an inflammatory infiltrate rich in eosinophils. CASE REPORT: The AA. present a case of the IFP of the stomach. A 85-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for early vomiting and epigastric pain. The patient underwent a gastroduodenoscopy that revealed a polypoid lesion mimicking cancer of the antrum and subtotal obstruction of the gastric transit. CONCLUSIONS: The Endoscopic Ultrasound Sonography suggested the presence of a lesion of the submucosal layer such as lymphoma or other type of malignancy like gastrointestinal stromal tumor (G.I.S.T)

EFFECTS OF WARFARIN ON THROMBOSIS OF THE JUGULAR VEINS OF RABBITS INDUCED BY PROLONGED STASIS
We have studied the effects of warfarin pretreatment on blood coagulation tests, thrombosis and endothelial damage in the rabbit after 2 h of subsequent venous stasis. We found that 3 mg/kg warfarin significantly modified the results of prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and ProComplex tests. The incidence of thrombosis was not reduced by warfarin, but the weight of the thrombi were inversely related to the effects of the drug on blood coagulation. The endothelial cells showed some degree of damage. In conclusion, warfarin neither prevents endothelial damage nor reduces the incidence of thrombosis after venous stasis, but retards the growth of thrombi
