Osteoarthritis: research update and clinical applications
No full textMusculoskeletal (MS) ultrasonography (US) offers an overall assessment of the joints in OA. MSUS of the peripheral joints can be carried out at the time of consultation with high patient acceptability. This allows an immediate correlation between imaging findings and clinical data that improves diagnosis and management of patients with OA. The principal indications for MSUS in OA include detection of articular cartilage damage, bone changes, joint inflammation and adjacent soft tissue lesions. The main added value of US over clinical examination and plain radiography is its higher sensitivity for detecting synovitis and bone surface abnormalities, respectively. In addition, MSUS can be routinely used to guide accurate and safe diagnostic or therapeutic injections in the OA joints. No full textEn este texto se presenta el epílogo de Extremadura Saqueada (Ruedo Ibérico, 1978), en el cuarenta aniversario de su publicación. En esta presentación, el propio autor, José Manuel Naredo, recuerda el proceso de gestación del libro, sus contenidos principales y reflexiona sobre la evolución del negocio del sector eléctrico en la construcción de grandes infraestructuras, una tendencia que se apuntaba entonces y continua vigente. Naredo, junto al amplio equipo que elaboró Extremadura Saqueada, nos presentan y analizan una historia de extractivismo desde una perspectiva de dominación multidimensional, en el que las variables económicas, ecológicas y sociales confluyen. Un estudio pionero metodológicamente que aún hoy resulta básico para comprender las dinámicas de fractura social en España.This text presents the epilogue of Extremadura Saqueada (Ruedo Ibérico, 1978), on the fortieth anniversary of its publication. In this presentation, the author, José Manuel Naredo, recalls the process of gestation of the book, its main contents and reflects on the evolution of the business of the electricity sector in the construction of large infrastructures, a trend that was then pointed and continues in force. Naredo, together with the large team that elaborated Extremadura Saqueada, present and analyze a history of extractivism from a perspective of multidimensional domination, in which economic, ecological and social variables converge. A methodologically pioneering study that is still basic to understand the social fracture dynamics in Spain

No full textJosé Manuel Naredo talks in this interview about how the ordinary economic approach considers the economic process as a “productive” process of supposed “goods and services” that must grow incessantly, leaving a physical “environment”, but also a political, social, and even financial one, unstudied; therefore, without realizing whether or not that growth is associated with something socially and ecologically desirable. Instead, Naredo proposes in his new book Taxonomía del lucro (Taxonomy of profit) to make visible, classify and rank all the sources of profit that the ordinary economic approach encompasses and indiscriminately commends in terms of production, although most of these are actually wealth acquisition activities, in which power constitutes a key ingredient of its mechanisms.José Manuel Naredo habla en esta entrevista de cómo el enfoque económico ordinario considera el proceso económico como un proceso “productivo” de supuestos “bienes y servicios” que debe de crecer incesantemente, dejando un “medio ambiente” físico, pero también político, social, e incluso financiero, inestudiado; por tanto, sin advertir si ese crecimiento se asocia o no a algo social y ecológicamente deseable. Ultrasound in the study and monitoring of osteoarthritis
No full textThis review addresses the use of ultrasound (US) as an imaging technique for the evaluation and monitoring of the osteoarthritic joint. US complements both the clinical examination and radiological imaging by allowing the rheumatologist to recognize not only the bony profile but also to visualize the soft tissues. Systematic US scanning following established guidelines can demonstrate even minimal abnormalities of articular cartilage, bony cortex and synovial tissue. US is also extremely sensitive in the detection of soft tissue changes in the involved joints including the proliferation of the synovium and changes in the amount of fluid present within the joint. Monitoring the amount of fluid in the hip and knee joint with osteoarthritis may be a potentially useful finding in the selection of patients for clinical investigation and for assessing their response to therapeutic interventions. © 2008
