The War that lead to the Liberation of Italy was fought to regain territory inch by inch. The road and rail networks were strategic objectives for both sides: the troops who were retreating and those who were advancing. Thousands
of bridges were damaged and destroyed, tons of iron, bricks and concrete collapsed into the rivers. The “first aid” given to the structures, led by the Allied Corps of Engineers, was based on salvaging what could be saved. With improvisation,
intuition and courage the “standard” procedures of American manuals combined forces with the experience of the Italian artisans. “Surgical” interventions were made on the structures that had been bombed or blown up: hoisting, cleaning
up, and rendering unusual combinations of materials and structural schemes. The cross-fertilization between American methods and Italian practice, was witness by new words soon established in the Sappers language, (such as “structuring” and “centering”). The Reconstruction, that followed after a few months supported by US aids was an unprecedented feat for Italian engineers and construction companies. There were cost constraints (funds still came through the Allied Military
Government), shortage of plant and equipment, comply with “stringent aesthetic criteria” to rebuild the cities and their bridges; cement was the only material for which the Allied Government could ensures supplies. These were the conditions
surrounding the “counterbalanced” beams used by Morandi over the river Liri, and for the Maillart arches by Carè and Giannelli over the rivers Nera and Frigido, the “steelless vaults” by Cestelli Guidi over the river Arno and the “rotating semiarches” by Krall over the river Calore, the two low-rise arches in reinforced concrete to “provide a city frame in harmony with monuments” of Firenze and Pisa. Simultaneous determination of enalapril maleate and hydrochlorothiazide in tablets by derivative UV spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography
A method for the simultaneous determination of enalapril maleate and hydrochlorothiazide in pharmaceutical formulations (tablets) is described. The procedure is based on the use of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and of the second-derivative ultraviolet spectra, by utilizing the linear relationship between substances concentration and derivative peak amplitude. The minimum concentration detectable by derivative spectrophotometry was 1 μg ml−1 for both drugs, and by HPLC 50 ng ml−1 for hydrochlorothiazide and 100 ng ml−1 for enalapril maleate. The relative standard deviations observed were approx. 2% for derivative spectrophotometry, and 1.5% for HPLC. The proposed methods, which give thoroughly comparable data, are simple and rapid, and allow precise and accurate results
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Functional clustering of Temperature and Precipitation data for Italian climate zones determination
Una possibile risposta per l'adeguamento sismico e la valorizzazione dei borghi antichi: il protocollo "Casa21"
The refurbishment of existing buildings is today mainly directed to the energy efficiency and indoor comfort aspects, while the reduction of the seismic risk is left in the background, if not totally ignored. This paper presents the results of a research that has led to the development of an innovative construction system based on the use of CLT panels (Cross Laminated Timber) and an assessment pro-tocol for the reconstruction, the seismic and performance retrofitting of old Italian villages. The project, named "Casa21", considers the building as a whole, and can be applied both for the seismic retrofitting and the upgrading of the existing buildings to the new standards of construction, as well as for the construction of new buildings and for the post-earthquake reconstruction. In the first case, typical of historical and artistic high value buildings, it operates through the emptying and the reconstruction of a new building within the existing façades, that are connected to the new CLT structure with appropriate connectors. In the second case, it operates through the complete demolition and the reconstruction of the building with a CLT panels structure and an outside coating layer in line with the local building traditions. The paper illustrates the construction system characteristics, main applications, potentiality and technological details and it describes the case of a prototype building, designed following the "Casa21" protocol and recently completed in the municipality of Pienza (SI)
