"Sinization" Against "Westernization" in Beijing Contemporary Graffiti? A Comparison between the Kwan-Yin Clan and the ABS Crew
This article aims at analyzing the development of graffiti art in the city of Beijing, where graffiti was introduced in People’s Republic of China in the first place. In Beijing’s graffiti an attempt to balance Euro-American influences with Chinese cultural references is evident in the works of almost every graffiti crew. Among them, the Kwanyin Clan and the ABS crew are representative examples of completely different ways of balancing those opposing forces: the first one wants to manifestly express its Chineseness, while the second one is deeply influenced by the Euro-American tradition and aims at being part of the global competition. Analyzing some of their main artworks, this article aims at illustrating their modus operandi and questioning the possibility of taking about “sinization” and “westernization” process in Beijing graffiti
This essay contributes to the study of the critical re-examination of Chinese pre-imperial philosophy during the Cultural Revolution through its superimposition with contemporary ideological struggles. In particular, the essay proposes an analysis of a critical edition of Confucius’ Analects published in 1974 during the anti-Confucian campaign. The study aims to contribute to a more general investigation that touches upon the main political stakes between late 1973 and 1975, which condensed the various unresolved knots of the Cultural Revolution, demonstrating its reabsorption within the bureaucratic confines of the party-state itself
Ethnicity and tradition in the upper Mekong region: mapping the other China at the turn of the XIX Century
This contribution deals with some aspects of “unconventional” knowledge about China, which have hardly been taken into consideration by mainstream Chinese studies, so that still today what is known of the local history and ethnology of Southwest China can hardly be compared with the knowledge acquired over decades of traditional Han studies. The northwestern borders of Yunnan province have always delimited a very complex area, hosting many peripheral populations and laying at the juncture of both Chinese and Tibetan political expansion. In my paper I will investigate ethnicity in this area at the turn of the XIX century, with a special focus on the Naxi. The analysis will be conducted by taking into account the records of the first European explorers and scholars who travelled across this region. The data collected will be then compared and contrasted with those in Han historical primary sources. This framework will be employed to perform a diachronic analysis, suggesting changes and continuities in local cultures, both geographically and ethnonymically. Lastly, passages from The Travels of Marco Polo will be considered to critically revise some of the conclusions drawn by a few notable Orientalists of the last century about the presence of the Naxi-Mosuo in the traveller’s book
‘Nella storia’ e ‘sulla storia’. Discontinuità e cosmopolitismo nelle narrazioni letterarie della Cina moderna
This paper analyses how, beyond the traditional link that connects literature with history and historiography, modern Chinese literature has both experienced the dominance of history and acted as an effective agent of change in China’s historical events. Narrating the past is a crucial activity for both literature and politics. Consequently, it is inevitable for Chinese writers to frequently engage with political power, either challenging or accommodating official discourse. A distinctive element that characterizes the relationship between history and literature has been the sharing by writers and literary movements of transnational tendencies from the Marxist concept of history to postmodernism

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
