Digestive Enzymes of Human and Nonhuman Primates

    No full text
All living organisms need to consume nutrients to grow, survive, and reproduce, making the successful acquisition of food resources a powerful selective pressure. However, acquiring food is only part of the challenge. While all animals spend much of their daily activity budget hunting, searching for, or otherwise procuring food, a large part of what is involved in overall nutrition occurs once the meal has been swallowed. Most nutritional components are too complex for immediate use and must be broken down into simpler compounds, which can then be absorbed by the body. This process, digestion, is catalyzed by enzymes that are either endogenous or produced by the host's microbial population. Research shows that the nutritional value of food is partially constrained by the digestive abilities of the microbial community present in the host's gut and that these microbes rapidly adapt to changes in diet and other environmental pressures. An accumulating body of evidence suggests that endogenously produced digestive enzymes also have been, and still are, common targets of natural selection, further cementing their crucial role in an organism's digestive system.Peer reviewe

The effects of anticipated domestic equality on undergraduate women’s career ambitions

    No full text
Previous research has found that young women consistently anticipate “the second shift” (Hochschild, 1989) in their future marriages, defined as disparities in domestic work that disadvantage them, even when they envision situations that should facilitate domestic equality (e.g., earning more money than their spouse; Fetterolf & Eagly, 2011; Fetterolf & Rudman, 2012). The present study examined (1) the influence of information about marital trends on young women’s expected domestic equality, and (2) the influence of young women’s expected domestic equality on their future career ambitions. Participants, who were undergraduate women, read one of three different newspaper articles indicating trends in the distribution of domestic work: (1) domestic equality as the new norm, (2) stalled progress toward domestic equality, or (3) a reversal of inequality, with men responsible for more of the domestic work than women. Participants then indicated their plans for their future careers, as well as their expectations for domestic equality in their own future marriages. Surprisingly, the domestic trends in the articles did not have much of an influence on participants’ expected domestic or paid labor. Across all conditions, participants expected to do a larger proportion of the housework than their spouse, and to earn less money for their work, while also working the same number of hours outside the home as their spouse (except in the stalled condition, where they expected to work less hours in paid employment). Additionally, participants’ anticipated domestic labor was negatively correlated with their anticipated work hours, although it was not associated with other future career outcomes (e.g., salary). Overall, the present study suggests that domestic inequality is entrenched in young women’s expectations. The implications for gender equality are discussed.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Janell Cora Fetterol

Result of a documentary and bibliographic research among the different periods which Cora Coralina contributed, since the beginning of her literary lifeThis article intends to show that the pages of the periodicals worked as a kind of laboratory for improving the author\u27s writing, as well as point out how the chronicler founding principles are intrinsically connected in his poetic work. It also shows the differences between her initial work and the work of her maturity, as well as a way in which the poet includes her chronicler experience in her poems. Finally, we will point out the poetic connection between Cora Coralina and the Cidade de Goiás, which establishes as a genuine chronicle of society Vilaboense.

The general objective of this work is to contribute with studies of the mythic construction of Cora Coralina. It´s specific objectives are: 1) to examine the mythic construction of Cora Coralina by the poetic s work r; 2) to analyze the way how the speech of the literary criticism in the journalistic media has been using the auto representations of the author to represent her publicly; 3) to verify how the social context, the cognitive context and the speech context are related and became representatives of the way how the speech is used in the social, cognitive and speech dimensions; 4) to explore the imaginary complexes of the discursive textual representations. The research is justified because the studies realized about Cora Coralina don´t treat, until this moment, the mythic constitution in a systematic way to make evident how the myth may be found in the discursive formulation, articulating individual and social perspectives. To deal with that we have chosen our theory and methodology foundation in the socio cognitive perspective of the Critical Analysis of the Speech, and the Theory of Contexts of Teun A. van Dijk (2012). We have also elected the phenomenological precepts of Merleau-Ponty and the theories of the multi-store model of memory, as a theory base. It means that our focus is to make a study of trans-discipline with the objective to build it´s own theory. The methodology procedure is analytic-theoric and follows these steps: 1) the selection of a corpora and the selection of texts made by two different materials: texts of the author and texts of the literary criticism and publicity; 2) the identification, in the author´s texts, of discursive centers in each phase that composed the narrative way of the heroes; 3) the exam of the contextual categories of the discursive ethos made from these focus; 4) the subdivision of the critical texts in two groups they came before the public projection of the name of the author, and they project her name in the local and national levels and they have identified and discussed the ideological positions that guide their evaluation; 5) the identification and the verification, in the texts that project the name of the author, from the inter-text and the inter speech and the systems of beliefs that allow the mythic construction of the image of Cora Coralina. The results show that: 1) the myth construction of Cora Coralina has a way that is linguistic identified by the author herself and has a speech way that is institutionally realized by the others; 2) the mythic construction by the discursive ethos transforms Aninha in Cora Coralina, that constructs is constructed connected with the city of Goiás; 3) Cora Coralina´s myth traduces the social wishes of re-signify the social papers of elderly, women and local cultures which compose Brazilian societyCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio

LEMBRANÇAS DE ANINHA NO UNIVERSO POÉTICO DE CORA CORALINA

This research has the aim of studying the polyphony in Cora Coralina's work, specially in the distinction between the childhood’s voice, assumed by Aninha, and the own author's voice, when she materializes her selfness, term used by Saturnino (2003) to describe the interior self in a Freudian perspective. For that, we will adopt the assumptions of Candido's (1989) literary critics  and Bakhtin's (1997) notions of polyphony, systematized by Ducrot (1987), looking at poetry from a dialogic perspective. To know a little bit more about Cora Coralina's life and work, we are going to draw an approximating path between her poetics and her existence, based on Saturnino's (2003) and Denófrio and Camargo’s (2006) researches, and on Britto's (2007) sociological studiesEsta pesquisa tem como objetivo o estudo da polifonia existente na obra de Cora Coralina, especialmente na distinção entre a voz da infância, assumida por Aninha, e a voz da própria autora, isto é, quando esta materializa sua eudade, termo utilizado por Saturnino (2003) para descrever o eu interior no sentido freudiano. &nbsp
