Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Avaliação e caracterização da helmintofauna de Athene cunicularia (Molina, 1782) (Strigiformes, Strigidae) da Região Sul do Brasil
Get PDFPopularmente conhecida como coruja-buraqueira, Athene cunicularia é uma das corujas mais comuns do Brasil. É uma espécie generalista e sua dieta consiste em roedores, morcegos, répteis, anfíbios, insetos e pequenas aves, demonstrando uma grande habilidade na captura dessas presas. Os levantamentos parasitológicos com viés ecológico se fazem necessários no Brasil, uma vez que os mesmos respondem a questões ecológicas e evolutivas da relação parasito-hospedeiro e que ainda existem lacunas a este respeito na bibliografia. O presente estudo contribuiu para o conhecimento acerca do parasitismo em aves silvestres brasileiras e teve como objetivo a identificação taxonômica da helmintofauna de A. cunicularia, relacionando os dados de prevalência, intensidade média e abundância média de infecção dos parasitos com o comprimento, o peso e o sexo do hospedeiro. Para realizar o estudo foram analisados 30 indivíduos de A. cunicularia, provenientes de situações de conflito no Rio Grande do Sul e em Santa Catarina. As corujas foram mantidas em refrigeração e no momento da necropsia e coleta dos helmintos, os espécimes foram medidos, pesados e sexados. Os animais foram necropsiados para análise dos órgãos internos a fim de verificar a presença ou ausência de endoparasitos. Os helmintos foram processados e determinados usando a bibliografia especializada. Foram encontrados 16 clados relacionados à helmintofauna de Athene cunicularia: Neodiplostomun americanum, Strigea falconis, Prosthogonimus ovatus, Athesmia attilae, Conspicuum conspicuum, Lubens lubens, um digenético não identificado, Centrorhynchus globocaudatus, Sphaerirostris turdi, Centrorynchus sp. (em forma de cistacanto), Galeiceps sp., Subulura alfivensis, Dispharynx nasuta, Synhimantus laticeps, Cosmocephalus obvelatus e um nematoide pertencente à Superfamília Oxyuroideae. Dados morfométricos do hospedeiro e os índices parasitários foram analisados estatisticamente utilizando-se o R e Microsoft Excel. Não houve diferença significativa entre a helmintofauna de machos (52%) e fêmeas (48%) de Athene cunicularia. Houve relação estatisticamente significativa (p<0,05 e ΔAIC<2) entre a quantidade de helmintos presentes, o peso e sexo do hospedeiro. Futuros estudos que agreguem dados de sazonalidade e dieta do hospedeiro estudado devem ser realizados, podendo mostrar interações mais precisas e eventualmente incomuns na relação parasito-hospedeiro.Popularly known as "burrowing owl", Athene cunicularia is one of the most common owls in Brazil. It is a generalist species and its diet consists of rodents, bats, reptiles, amphibians, insects and small birds, which demonstrates a great ability of capture such preys. Parasitological research with an ecological approach is still needed in Brazil, to explain how parasites answer ecological and evolutionary questions of the parasite-host relationship and, even then, there are still gaps in the. The present study contributed to the knowledge about parasitism in Brazilian wild birds and it focused at the taxonomic identification of the helminth fauna of A. cunicularia, correlating the data of prevalence, average intensity, and average abundance of infection of the parasites with the size, weight and the sex of the host. To carry out this study, 30 individuals of A. cunicularia from conflict situations in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states, were analyzed. The owls were kept refrigerated and at the time of necropsy and collection of helminths, specimens were measured, weighted and had their sexes determined. The animals were necropsized to verify the presence or absence of endoparasites. Helminths were processed and defined according to the specialized bibliography. It were founded 16 clades related to the helminth fauna of A. cunicularia: Neodiplostomun americanum, Strigea falconis, Prosthogonimus ovatus, Athesmia attilae, Conspicuum conspicuum, Lubens lubens, an unidentified digenetic, Centrorhynchus globocaudatus, Sphaerirostris turdii, Centrorynchus sp. (cystacanth form), Galeiceps sp., Subulura alfivensis, Dispharynx nasuta, Synhimantus laticeps, Cosmocephalus obvelatus and a nematode which belongs to the Oxyuroideae Subfamily. Host morphometric data and parasitic parameters were analyzed statistically using R and Microsoft Excel. There was no significant difference between the helminth fauna of males (52%) and females (48%) of A. cunicularia. There was a statistically significant relationship (p <0.05 and ΔAIC <2) between the number of helminths present, the weight and sex of the host. Future studies that add seasonality data and the studied host's diet should be performed, which may show more precise and eventually unusual interactions in the parasite-host relationship

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
