    Plant-based compounds are emerging substitutes for chemical treatments in aquaculture since they are known to cause less harm to both the environment and its organisms. Garlic (Allium sativum) is a popular herb that has a broad range of uses, especially in the control and treatment of bacterial and parasitic diseases. However, its toxicity to tilapia is not well-studied. Hence, this study was conducted to test the toxicity levels of garlic powder in juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by determining the cumulative mortality and median lethal concentration (LC50). Test fish were exposed through immersion in 6 concentrations (150, 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400 mg L-1) of garlic powder with 25% allicin and a control in 96 h static bioassay. Within 24 h, test fish exposed to 250 mg L-1 garlic and above, exhibited abnormal behaviors such as lethargy, gasping for air, and weak responses to environmental stimuli. Cumulative mortality was highest at 100% in 400 mg L-1 garlic at 48 h. Mortalities were dependent on the concentration and duration of exposure. The 96 h LC50 of garlic powder to O. niloticus was 225.86 mg L-1 with lower and upper confidence limits of 210.37 and 242.50 mg L-1, respectively at 27°C

    First histopathological description of parasites and shell conditions of the donkey's ear abalone Haliotis asinina (Linnaeus, 1758) cultured in marine cages and land-based tanks in the Philippines

    This study is the first attempt to assess parasitic infestations in grow-out cage culture and land-based grow-out tanks of the donkey's ear abalone Haliotis asinina in the Philippines. This histopathological study of the parasites was conducted from 2010 to 2013. Using 30 samples of abalones collected monthly from two sites, samples were measured and fixed in 10% formaldehyde in seawater, and routine histological techniques were used to identify the parasites. Water temperatures of the grow-out floating sea cages and the abalone hatchery facilities whose abalones were collected measured 27.5°C–32.5°C and 26°C–29°C, respectively; salinity in the area of the sea cages was 32–34 ppt, whereas salinity of the abalone hatchery was 32–35 ppt. Examination of the shell from cage-cultured abalones revealed the presence of burrowing polychaetes belonging to the families Serpulidae (prevalence, 32.5%) and Dorvilleidae (prevalence, 30%); on the other hand, only Dorvilleidae (prevalence of 28.5%) was detected in abalones from the hatchery. Histological examination revealed the presence of unknown ciliates (prevalence, 37.5%), Nematopsis sp. (prevalence, 17%), and metacestode Tylocephalum sp. (prevalence, 8.5%) from the grow-out cage-cultured abalones, whereas unidentified ciliates (prevalence, 32.5%) and Nematopsis sp. (prevalence, 10.5%) were detected from hatchery stock. The data collected showed that there was low-intensity infection and prevalence of parasites in abalones from grow-out cages and hatchery.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Acute lethal toxicity of dried garlic (Allium sativum) powder on orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) juveniles under static exposure

    The present study was carried out to assess the toxic effect and determine the lethal concentration of dried garlic (Allium sativum) powder on the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) juveniles. Laboratory static bioassays were conducted to determine the 96-h LC50 of different concentrations of garlic (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 mg L-1) on grouper juveniles (mean weight, 35.4±6.18 g and mean length, 13.2±0.51 cm). The 96-h LC50 was 74.78 mg L-1 with lower and upper confidence limits of 62.8 and 89.06 mg L-1, respectively. All fish exposed to 30 to 180 mg L-1 exhibited rapid movement, faster opercular activity and erratic swimming whereas at higher concentrations (90 mg L-1 to 180 mg L-1) fish showed additional behavioral changes such as loss of balance, lethargy, gulping for air and respiratory distress. Water quality parameters were within the recommended acceptable limits. This LC50 value can be used as a baseline reference to generate an effective concentration of garlic for future prophylaxis and treatment for parasitic, viral and bacterial infection in grouper.The authors are grateful to the Government of Japan Trust Fund GoJ-TF6 (8400-T-RD-FH0215) for supporting and funding this research.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
