Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textLe città portuali hanno da sempre affascinato geografi, economisti, architetti / urbanisti e sociologi, quali centri di scambio al confine tra la terra e il mare. Le due componenti delle città portuali ovvero i porti come nodi all'interno del sistema di trasporti e le città come centri di un sistema socio-economico più ampio, sono principalmente considerati interconnessi in termini di ubicazione, sviluppo, attività e problematiche. Tuttavia, i progressi tecnologici, il crescente livello di globalizzazione e dei flussi transnazionali, hanno avuto importanti implicazioni sui temi dello sviluppo delle città portuali. Sebbene questo settore sia stato notevolmente indagato dalla comunità scientifica, esigue analisi sono state svolte sulle città globali emergenti del Medio Oriente. Dal 1970, tra le città-stato arabe della regione del Golfo Persico, Dubai ha conosciuto uno sviluppo con un ritmo senza precedenti, emergendo come un hub regionale, attraverso la mediazione di flussi di persone, merci, capitali, conoscenze e idee. Quindi, il caso di Dubai, notevole quanto meno nel contesto mediorientale, è interessante per ulteriori studi su come i flussi globali possono creare configurazioni spaziali complesse. Attraverso la definizione di una base teorica desunta da una vasta quantità di letteratura, questa tesi illustra gli aspetti e le caratteristiche delle dinamiche di sviluppo delle città portuali e nello specifico di Dubai. Tenendo conto della natura multidisciplinare del tema, incentrato su un caso studio concreto, la presente tesi ha combinato diverse metodologie al fine di rispondere a ciascuna delle seguenti domande di ricerca: perché l'infrastruttura portuale è fondamentale per la città e, in particolare, come contribuiscono i flussi di merci alla crescita delle città portuali (hub) nei paesi in rapido sviluppo? Una combinazione di studi teorici ed empirici è pertanto indispensabile per studiare il fenomeno del rapido sviluppo urbano nell'ambito della ricerca sugli sulle città portuali (hub) globali. Assumendo i proventi del petrolio come motore propulsivo per la crescita di Dubai, questo studio sostiene l'importanza delle previsioni infrastrutturali a supporto del rapido sviluppo della città, da entrepôt a città portuale intermodale. La rilevanza del porto di Dubai è basata su un'efficace integrazione tra la logistica e la filiera produttiva globale, che svolge un ruolo chiave nella diversificazione dell'economia. Questo studio illustra il modello di sviluppo originale di Dubai messo in relazione alle altre città petrolifere del Medio, che richiama anche le principali città globali a vocazione portuale orientali, come Singapore.Port-cities have long fascinated geographers, economists, architects/planners and sociologists, since they are centres of exchange at the boundaries between the land and the sea. The two components of port-cities, ports as nodes within a transport system, and cities as central places of a wider socio-economic system, are mainly considered interconnected in their location, development, activities and issues. However, the technological advancements, growing level of globalization and transnational flows, have had major implications on port-city development issues. Although this field of study has already received a great deal of research, little evidence has nevertheless been provided about the emerging global cities in the Middle East and its sub-region. Since the 1970s, among the Arabic city-states of the Persian Gulf region, Dubai has developed with an unprecedented pace, to emerge as a regional hub, while mediating the flows of people, goods, capital, knowledge and ideas. Hence, the extreme case of Dubai, not least in the Middle East, is interesting for further studies on how global flows can create complex spatial configurations. Framing a theoretical base from a wide body of literature- linking port-city studies and globalization theories- this dissertation illustrates the features and characteristics of the port-city development dynamics, at the basis of Dubai. Taking into account the multidisciplinary nature of the topic, centred on a case-study approach, the present thesis has combined different methodologies in order to answer the following key research question: why is the port-infrastructure crucial for the city, and specifically how do freight flows contribute to the growth of hub-port cities, in the fast developing countries? A combination of theoretical and empirical studies is, therefore, essential in order to investigate the phenomenon of rapid urban development within the framework of (global) hub port-city studies. Emphasizing the oil-revenues as the starting engine for Dubai’s growth, this study argues the importance of infrastructural provision for the city’s rather fast development from an entrepôt to a transhipment hub port city. The significance of Dubai’s port relies on its successful integration within the logistics and global supply chain, which play a key role in diversifying the economy. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
