Multiwall carbon nanotubes as MRI contrast agents for tracking stem cells
No full textIn this study we investigate the potential of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with low metal impurities (2.57% iron) as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Taking into account probable aggregation at high MWCNTs concentration analysis shows that the r(2) relaxivity of MWCNTs in 1% agarose gels at 19 degrees C is 564 +/- 41 s(-1) mM(-1); this is attributed to both the presence of iron oxide impurities and also to the carbon MWCNT structure itself. Stem cells were labelled with MWCNTs to demonstrate the effectiveness of MWCNTs as MRI contrast agents for cellular MRI. The MWCNTs did not impair cell viability or proliferation. These results suggest that the MRI contrast agent properties of the MWCNTs could be used in vivo for stem cell tracking/imaging and during MWCNT-mediated targeted electro-chemotherapy of tumours.</p

Duce, an Oracle Based Approach to Constructive Induction
No full textDuce 1 is a Machine Learning system which suggests high-level domain features to the user (or oracle on the basis of a set of example object descriptions. Six transformation operators are used to successively compress the given examples by generalisation and feature construction. In this paper Duce is illustrated by way of its construction of a simple animal taxonomy and a hierarchical parity checker. However, Duce's main achievement has been the restructuring of a substantial expert system for deciding whether positions within the chess endgame of King-and-Pawn-on-a7 v. Kingand -Rook (KPa7KR) are won-for-white or not. The new concepts suggested by Duce for the chess expert system hierarchy were found to be meaningful by the chess expert Ivan Bratko. An existing manually created KPa7KR solution, which was the basis of a recent PhD thesis [ 20 ] , is compared to the structure interactively created by Duce. No full textThis study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

Ionic Peptide Aggregation: Exploration of Conformational Dynamics in Aqueous Solution by Computational Techniques
No full textThe effects of end groups on KEK peptide conformational characteristics and self-assembling properties in water solution are investigated by using long lasting all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis of the structural macroscopic and microscopic properties and the examination of intra- and intermolecular interactions suggest, in agreement with experimental observations, the role played by side chains and terminal regions in determining the characteristic features of the assemblages. Competition between intra- and interchain interactions greatly affects the diffusivity of peptide molecules and the conformational space that they can sample, ultimately controlling the shape, size, and distribution of the aggregate configurations. Different peptide end groups influence peptide flexibility and seem to play a crucial role in determining the aggregates' supramolecular architectures
