    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    In deze scriptie wordt onderzocht wat de rol van perceptie en lichamelijke ervaring in immersieve lichtinstallaties is. In de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw was er een fundamentele verschuiving binnen de beeldende kunst: de nadruk verschoof van het kunstobject naar de ervaring van de bezoeker. Deze verschuiving vormde een belangrijk onderdeel binnen de nieuwe kunstvormen en -stromingen waaronder installatiekunst, het minimalisme en Light & Space-kunst. Binnen deze kunst kreeg de bezoeker een centrale rol in de betekenisgeving van het kunstwerk die tot stand komt in de interactie van de bezoeker met het werk. Dit fenomeen is ook terug te zien bij immersieve lichtinstallaties van hedendaagse kunstenaars als Olafur Eliasson, Ann Veronica Janssens en James Turrell. In de literatuur over immersieve installaties ontbreekt doorgaans een fenomenologische analyse van het werk waarin de waarneming en belichaamde ervaring van de bezoeker centraal staat. In deze scriptie wordt die lacune opgevuld door installaties niet alleen te beschouwen als visuele ervaringen, maar door de belichaamde ervaring van de actieve bezoeker als fundamenteel onderdeel van het werk te stellen. De onderzoeksvraag luidt als volgt: Welke rol speelt perceptie en lichamelijke ervaring van licht en kleur in immersieve lichtinstallaties? Er zijn een aantal filosofen en theoretici die een theoretisch kader vormen rondom deze vraag. Rondom het fenomeen fenomenologie staat de filosofie van Maurice Merleau-Ponty centraal. Hij stelt dat perceptie geen puur visueel of cognitief fenomeen is, maar een ‘belichaamde ervaring’ waarin het lichaam fundamenteel verweven is met de wereld en het beleven daarvan. Het subject en object zijn dus geen losstaande entiteiten maar zijn met elkaar verweven en in die wisselwerking ontstaat betekenis. Claire Bishop biedt een belangrijk kader met haar theorieën over installatiekunst, volgens haar richt installatiekunst zich direct tot de toeschouwer en ziet het deze als een actief subject dat het kunstwerk ervaart met meerdere zintuigen. Een belangrijk kenmerk van installatiekunst is volgens haar dat er een actieve interactie met de bezoeker nodig is. Mieke Bals theorieën vormen een belangrijke gelijkenis met het onderzoek in deze scriptie. Ze stelt namelijk dat de perceptie van abstracte kunst een ervaring is, in plaats van een puur visuele waarneming. Bal introduceert de performativiteit van de bezoeker: ze benadrukt het belang van het lichaam in de perceptie van kunst. Belangrijk daarin is dat het lichaam niet alleen als passieve ontvanger fungeert, maar ook als actieve factor die betekenis geeft aan een werk. In de scriptie worden drie casestudies onderzocht: Aftershock (2021) van James Turrell, Room for one colour (1997) van Olafur Eliasson en yellowbluepink (2015) van Ann Veronica Janssens. De werken zijn gekozen vanwege hun visuele overeenkomsten: het zijn allemaal ‘kale’ ruimtes gevuld met licht (en mist). Deze scriptie is opgedeeld in drie hoofdstukken. Hoofdstuk één biedt een overzicht van de ontwikkeling van moderne beeldende kunst waarin James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson en Ann Veronica Janssens gepositioneerd kunnen worden. In hoofdstuk twee worden de drie casestudies Aftershock, Room for one colour en yellowbluepink geanalyseerd aan de hand van een formele analyse, theoretische inkadering en een fenomenologische interpretatie. Hiervoor is gebruik gemaakt van tentoonstellingsdocumentatie, interviews met de kunstenaars en beschrijvingen van bezoekers en critici. In hoofdstuk drie worden de drie werken met elkaar in dialoog gebracht in een kritische vergelijking. Deze analyse toont de implicaties aan van de verschillende benaderingen voor immersieve installatiekunst, waarbij de theorie van Thomas Nagel over subjectieve perceptie als kader dient. Een belangrijke conclusie van het onderzoek is dat de drie installaties sterk op elkaar lijken in vorm en immersieve ervaring, maar in strategie van elkaar verschillen. Turrell werkt in zijn installatie Aftershock met totale reductie en desoriëntatie om bezoekers te confronteren met de grenzen van hun eigen visuele systemen. Hij reduceert perceptie tot een overweldigende zintuigelijke ervaring met een Ganzfeld van kleuren. Eliasson benadrukt in zijn Room for one colour de cognitieve processen die de basis vormen van kleurwaarneming door middel van een monochrome gele ruimte. Via een minimale zintuigelijke belasting verhoogt hij het bewustzijn van de bezoeker over hun eigen identiteit en sociale conditionering van waarneming en die identiteit. In yellowbluepink benadert Janssens licht als een materie die zich pas manifesteert in de interactie en performativiteit van de bezoeker. Door middel van mist en kleur desoriënteert ze de bezoeker in een ruimte die een oneindige kwaliteit heeft. De belangrijkste conclusie is dat de kunstenaars allemaal de zintuigelijke en belichaamde ervaring van de bezoeker als fundamenteel onderdeel van het kunstwerk zien. Juist vanwege die nadruk op de individuele zintuigelijke en belichaamde ervaring roepen immersieve lichtinstallaties veel fundamentele vragen op die door hun subjectieve aard geen universeel antwoord hebben. Ze laten zien dat waarneming geen neutraal of autonoom gegeven is, maar altijd tijdelijk en gekaderd is in persoonlijke, sociale en culturele omstandigheden. De installaties tonen daarmee niet alleen licht, kleur en ruimte als materiaal, maar leren ons vooral iets over onszelf: over de manier waarop wij als subjectieve, enkelvoudige waarnemers betekenis geven aan de wereld op onze eigen manier. De rol van perceptie en zintuigelijke ervaring in immersieve lichtinstallaties wordt daardoor ook duidelijk: het confronteert de bezoeker met diens eigen waarneming. Niet alleen op het moment zelf, maar ook in relatie tot de bestaande conventies en normen die in ons leven aanwezig zijn en de invloed die zij uitoefenen op ons bestaan en onze manier van ‘zijn’
