Ethnic identity, political identity and ethnic conflict: simulating the effect of congruence between the two identities on ethnic violence and conflict

    Get PDF
This thesis outlines and presents an alternative hypothetical process to the emergence of ethnic conflict. Ethnic conflicts, rather than being dependent upon pre-existing 'ancient hatreds', are instead the result of a congruence between ethnic and political identity which grants individuals the ability to use ethnicity to identify and eliminate political threats. This hypothesis is formed by the examination of three case studies of ethnic conflict: Lebanon, Northern Ireland and Croatia. This hypothesis is then formalised and tested using an agent based simulation in which agent interactions are dependent upon ethnic and political identity and the congruence between the two. As predicted there was a strong positive correlation between how accurately ethnic identity reflected political identity and the level of ethnically motivated violence in the simulation, although the relationship was not linear. Furthermore the effect of a shift in congruence was found to be roughly comparable to the effect of initialising agents with a moderate level of pre-existing ethnic antagonism

Analiza discursului din Daniel 8, conform modelului propus de Alviero Niccacci (partea I)

Daniel 8 is one of the most important chapters from the book of Daniel, having special implications for the understanding of the great cosmic conflict between Christ and Satan, with the Sanctuary as the battlefield. This paper, as the first part of a two-part series, introduces the discourse analysis method of Alviero Niccacci, which will be applied to interpreting Daniel chapter 8. Niccacci considers that the Hebrew verbal system is the key to deciphering a text unit. At the basis of his theory there are two building blocks. First, the function of a Hebrew verbal form is determined by its position in the clause creating verbal or nominal clauses. Secondly, Niccacci develops three linguistic levels in the Hebrew text: (a) the differentiation between narrative and discourse is the linguistic attitude; (b) the prominence in a text emphasizes the foreground or the background and (c) the linguistic perspective which comprises the recovered information, the zero degree and the anticipated information. These two building blocks organize the text, making it easy to follow the transitions between the various forms/constructions. The analysis of these transitions helps the researcher better understand the syntactical connections between various levels of the text and the flow and the communication of ideas as the author intended, inspired by the Holy Spirit. This first part analyzes the first four verses of Daniel 8, leaving to the second part the analysis of the rest of the chapter at the grammatical and the syntactical levels with the resulting implications

The capability maturity model as a criminal justice process improvement paradigm

Background: The administrators, managers, and leaders of criminal justice organizations experience a plethora of processes that impact the strategic, tactical, and operational facets of their respective organizations. Sound processes are central to effectively and efficiently managing criminal justice organizations and for facilitating the optimal operations of the organization. Such management characteristics are necessary to render public services towards the goals of deterring crime and maintaining societal order. Administrating and managing criminal justice organizations involves paradigms that favor process improvement and quality of processes. Existing methods include the Compstat paradigm Total Quality Management, business process management, business process improvement, business process reengineering, standards, legislation, policy, and Six Sigma. However, such paradigms not approach process improvement from the unique perspective of process maturity as a foundational basis. Additionally, no solitary foundational basis exists that uniquely addresses organizational process improvement issues, regarding criminal justice entities, from the perspective of evolutionary process maturation through time. This research examines the potential of adapting the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMi) as a foundational process improvement framework among criminal justice organizations. Within the CMMi framework, process improvement begins from a state of random, ad hoc processes and culminates in a state of highly optimized processes. Through time, process maturation occurs through five primary stages sequentially: 1) random, 2) managed, 3) defined/specific, 4) quantitatively managed, and 5) optimized. This research explores the potential of leveraging the CMMi paradigm as a form of organizational process improvement within the criminal justice domain. Scope of the Study: This research investigated the potential for adapting the Capability Maturity Model (Integrated) (CMMi) within the criminal justice domain. A derivative maturity model framework, the Criminal Justice Maturity Model (CJMM), was crafted using the CMMi concept as its foundational premise. A Likert scale survey was implemented to investigate the perceptions of personnel regarding process improvement initiatives and their work settings. This study was constrained to the criminal justice domains of the states of Alabama and Mississippi. Data processing encompassed demographic descriptions of the survey instrument and the received responses, ANOVA, Chi-Square analysis, and the Cronbach Method. Stratifications involved separating the survey responses into classifications of Alabama versus Mississippi entities, urban versus rural entities, and management versus non-management entities. Findings and Conclusions: The conclusions of this research failed to show that all five levels of the maturity model framework appear to be separately perceived among the respondents. Therefore, per each individual stage of the maturity model framework, this research failed to show conclusively that the complete maturity model framework is adaptable among administrative settings in the criminal justice domain and that process maturity issues among respondent settings are addressed via a process maturity framework. Because this research failed to show the perceived characteristics of all five maturity levels of the maturity model framework separately, it is concluded that the criminal justice administrative settings of the respondents do not conform completely to the tenets of the CMMi paradigm. Future studies were recommended to pursue additional approaches of this research project. This study represents an initial starting point from which several future endeavors may be initiated.D. U.S. trade policy towards developing countries

    Get PDF
The United States has often been criticized for protectionist measures taken against developing country products. Yet, average agricultural protection has reemained practically nil in the U.S. over time, while rising in the European Common Market (E.C.M) and, even more, Japan. It further appears that manufactured imports from developing countries have increased much more rapidly, and reached higher levels, in the U.S. than in the E.C.M and, in particular, Japan. The U.S.-Japan comparisons for manufactured goods do not conform to the data on the extent of nontariff barriers, as measured by the share of imports from the developing countries which are subject to such trade barriers. The solution to the puzzle lies in part in the inadequacies of data on the share of imports subject to nontariff measures for gauging the protective effects of such measures and in part in the reliance on formal measures of protection in the United States as against the informal measures in Japan. More generally, one may explain the results obtained by reference to the openness of the U.S. market that has generally been more hospitable to imports from developing countries than have the markets of other industrial countries, particularly Japan.Poverty Assessment,Trade and Regional Integration,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Environmental Economics&Policies,Trade Policy

The purpose was to immerse ourselves in a steering concept. The purpose of this study is updating the balanced scorecard for Gavlegårdarna. Through literature, we wanted to get an idea and present how an effective BSC can be designed. Then we wanted to identify the failures of Gavlegårdarna scorecard and from this give suggestion of how the update may be completed.  Method: In our thesis we have worked from a deductive approach. We choose to do a qualitative scientific method as we would do empirical interviews. We used both secondary and primary data. Then we compared the theory with empirical data to identify discrepancies between theory and empiricism. Then we wanted to identify the gaps and make suggestions for improvement. Result & Conclusions: Some of the weaknesses we have identified are that the company doesn’t let their BSC to permeate all its activities, they haven’t clear links between the four perspectives of the scorecard and they do not use any direct strategies to achieve the objectives it has in each perspective. Suggestions for future research: Future research may involve a comparison between more real estate companies or between different public owned companies. A study of implementing a completely new BSC in Gavlegårdarnas organization can be interesting and further research into the criticism of the BSC, which led to the use of strategic maps. Contribution of the thesis: We hope that through our work other students might be inspired and interested in the BSC. Perhaps future paper writers will find inspiration in our work and reflect upon what we have written, or make future researches on the proposals that we have given. Key words: Balanced Scorecard, BSC, scorecard, the four perspectives, implementation, IT - support, criticism, suggestions for improvement

Open market operations and the federal funds rate

    Get PDF
It is commonly believed that the Fed's ability to control the federal funds rate stems from its ability to alter the supply of liquidity in the overnight market through open market operations. This paper uses daily data compiled by the author from the records of the Trading Desk of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York over the period March 1, 1984, through December 31, 1996: He analyzes the Desk's use of its operating procedure in implementing monetary policy and the extent to which open market operations affect the federal funds rate-the liquidity effect. The author finds that the operating procedure was used to guide daily open market operations; however, there is little evidence of a liquidity effect at the daily frequency and even less evidence at lower frequencies. Consistent with the absence of a liquidity effect, open market operations appear to be a relatively unimportant source of liquidity to the federal funds market.Federal funds rate ; Open market operations

Impact of the International Coffee Agreement's export quota system on the World's coffee market

    Get PDF
Ex-post simulations of the global coffee model over the recent period of operation of the International Coffee Agreement's export quota system, (1981-86) show the following. The quota system had a stabilizing effect on world coffee prices in the 1981-85 period. In 1986, when coffee prices increased sharply due to the drought in Brazil and the export quotas were suspended, prices would have been 24 percent higher in the absence of quotas over the 1981-85 period. However, the quotas have reduced export revenues (in real terms), except for such large producers as Brazil and Colombia. These countries gained form the scheme because they face very small or even zero marginal export revenues from increased exports, due to their large market shares. In projections of the coffee market, with and without the export quota system, prices would be substantially lower during the first half of the 1990s if the quota system were suspended in 1990. But prices would recover in the second half of the decade as production and exports declined in lagged response to the very low prices of the first half.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Markets and Market Access,Access to Markets,Crops&Crop Management Systems
