    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    La culture de la banane Cavendish aux Antilles françaises opère une transition agro-écologique depuis la fin des années 2000, incluant de nouvelles pratiques culturales pour limiter l'utilisation d'intrants chimiques et apporter de la diversité spécifique dans les systèmes. Parmi ces pratiques, l'effeuillage sévère est pratiqué pour maîtriser la cercosporiose noire du bananier plutôt que d'utiliser des fongicides foliaires ; des plantes de couverture sont utilisées en alternatives aux herbicides dans les parcelles et des engrais riches en azote organique remplacent les engrais riches en azote minéral. Mais ces pratiques peuvent réduire la production photosynthétique et la disponibilité des ressources azotées du sol, et de ce fait rendre les conditions de culture sub-optimales. Un des leviers pour maintenir des performances agronomiques satisfaisantes malgré ces conditions sub-optimales serait d'utiliser des cultivars adaptés à ces conditions de culture.Dans cette thèse, nous proposons d'utiliser une approche par traits fonctionnels pour caractériser une gamme de 12 cultivars de Cavendish issus du catalogue de Vitropic SA sur leur performance agronomique avec un effeuillage sévère et des ressources azotées limitées. Pour répondre à cette objectif nous supposons que des traits associés aux relations source-puit et à l'acquisition des ressources azotées permettraient de prédire la performance agronomique des cultivars avec un effeuillage sévère et des ressources azotées limitées. Nous avons, d'une part, mesuré sur les traits sur les cultivars dans un essai aux conditions de culture non limitantes, et d'autre part, mesuré la performance agronomique des bananiers dans quatre parcelles aux itinéraires techniques contrastés par la sévérité de l'effeuillage et la disponibilité en azote. Nous avons ensuite comparé les valeurs des traits des cultivars avec leur performance dans les différentes parcelles pour valider ou rejeter les traits.Nous avons obtenu des valeurs de traits différentes entre les cultivars, suggérant des différences de rapport source-puit et des capacité d'acquisition des ressources azotées. Nous avons également mesuré des différences de variation des poids de régime entre les cultivars, en réponse à une diminution de la production photosynthétique, lié au nombre de fruit par régime. En effet, DC-01, un cultivar possédant beaucoup de fruit, a été le plus sensible à une diminution de la production photosynthétique. A l'inverse, Poyo, un cultivar possédant moins de fruits par régime, a maintenu son poids régime malgré une diminution de la production photosynthétique. Enfin, nous avons observé des différences de stabilité des rendements entre les cultivars. Dans nos essais, Ruby et Mat-12 ont maintenu le même rendement malgré un effeuillage sévère et Gua-02 a obtenu le meilleur comportement avec des ressources azotées limitées. Cependant, nos essais n'ont pas permis de valider les traits fonctionnels pour prédire les performances agronomiques avec un effeuillage sévère et des ressources azotées limitées. Néanmoins, la méthode d'évaluation variétale que nous avons utilisée est prometteuse pour la sélection de bananiers et pourrait être développer pour d'autres critères sélections. A partir de nos résultats, pour chaque cultivar, nous avons établis des conseils d'utilisation, en proposant des itinéraires techniques auxquels le cultivar serait le plus adapté.Cavendish banana cultivation in the French West Indies has been undergoing an agro-ecological transition since the end of the 2000's, with the use of new cultural practices to reduce the use of chemical inputs and bring specific diversity in the system. Among these practices, severe deleafing is used to control black Sigatoka instead of applying foliar fungicides; live mulch is cropped for weed management instead of herbicides application and organic nitrogen-rich fertilizers are replacing mineral nitrogen-rich fertilizers. However, those practices can reduce photosynthetic production and soil nitrogen availability, and thus induce sub-optimal cropping conditions. One of the levers to maintain satisfactory agronomic performances despite these sub-optimal cropping conditions would be to cultivate cultivars adapted to these conditions.In this thesis, we used a trait-based approach to characterize a range of 12 Cavendish cultivars from the Vitropic SA brochure on their agronomic performance under severe deleafing and nitrogen shortage. To meet this aim, we hypothesized that traits associated with source-sink balance and nitrogen resource acquisition would be good predictor of the agronomic performance of cultivars with severe deleafing and nitrogen shortage. On one hand, we measured the traits on the cultivars in non-limiting cropping conditions, and on the other hand, we assessed the agronomic performance of the cultivars in four plots with contrasting itineraries in term of deleafing severity and of nitrogen availability. Then, we compared the trait values of the cultivars with their performance in the different plots to validate or reject the traits.We obtained different trait values between cultivars, suggesting differences in source-sink ratio and capacity in nitrogen acquisition. We also observed differences in bunch weight variation between cultivars, in response to a decrease in photosynthetic production, related to the fruit number per bunch. Indeed, DC-01, a cultivar with a high fruit number, was the most sensitive to a decrease in photosynthetic production. Conversely, Poyo, a cultivar with small fruit number, maintained its bunch weight despite a decrease in photosynthetic production. Finally, we observed differences in yield stability between cultivars, as Ruby and Mat-12 maintained the same yield despite severe deleafing and as Gua-02 exhibited the highest yield with nitrogen shortage. However, our trials did not allow to validate the traits as good predictors for agronomic performance under severe deleafing and nitrogen shortage. Nevertheless, the varietal evaluation method we used is promising for banana selection and could be developed for other selection criteria.
