Fil: Castillo Benitez, Bibiana Ruby. Implications of transitioning to green infrastructure: a quantitative sustainability assessment of stormwater management
The implementation of green infrastructure as a means to reduce stormwater through infiltration, evapotranspiration, and reuse is occurring in municipalities to reduce wastewater treatment loads (in the case of combined sewer systems) and pollution of surface water. Although green infrastructure technologies are becoming increasingly common and are propounded as being universally more sustainable than grey infrastructure, the economic and environmental implications of transitioning to green infrastructure are unique to each municipality and project. Many sustainability assessments have been reported in the literature comparing green and grey infrastructure, but what is lacking is a fundamental understanding of how design and operational decisions influence the sustainability of a community and its drainage infrastructure. This work elucidates sustainability implications of design decisions, including costs and indirect impacts of green and grey infrastructure, in order to inform urban stormwater management decision-making in the city of Chicago. An environmental assessment using life cycle assessment methodology, construction and design data, as well as data from the literature concluded that concrete production used during green infrastructure retrofits contributed 89.3-99.6% of the life cycle environmental impacts. While the studied green infrastructure retrofit introduced 4.35x107 kg CO2 equivalents to global warming and had many other environmental impacts, a comparable street rejuvenation project relying on grey infrastructure contributed approximately 20 times the environmental impacts across all environmental impact categories. Further, an economic analysis quantifies the cost of implementation for this project to be between US1.4−3million whereas the cost of a traditional street renewal project for the same system boundary is estimated to be US 520,000. Also, the cost of treatment using green infrastructure was found to be four orders of magnitude greater than treatment at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Finally, based on public records and by drawing from related studies in the literature, implementing green infrastructure had the indirect benefit of adding value to surrounding properties. By quantifying environmental, economic, and social impacts, a triple bottom line assessment was completed for Chicago’s stormwater management options to help navigate tradeoffs across and within dimensions of sustainability.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2017-05-01The student, Amy Benitez, accepted the attached license on 2015-04-27 at 09:23.The student, Amy Benitez, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2015-04-27 at 09:34.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2015-04-28 at 07:56.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #8114 on 2015-07-22 at 14:26:29Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T22:46:04Z (GMT). Recovery of modernist architecture in the Colombian Caribbean, through the rediscovery of architectural archives. The case of the domestic architecture of Miguel Farah Zakzuk
The present research aims to study the phenomenon of
modernism in the Caribbean region of Colombia through
architecture archives as documentation and tools of graphic
representation. Considering that this territory is home
to a large number of modernist works that continue to be
discovered today, thanks to recent publications that have
unveiled the work of authors who were instrumental in
modernizing the different cities of the Caribbean through
architecture, leaving a significant impact on the region.
Therefore, just as the modernist lessons of Colombian
and foreign masters have long been studied in major cities
such as Bogotá and Medellín, the intention is to also continue
this investigation into the Caribbean territory, where
new authors emerge, leaving behind an important modernist
architectural legacy and in some cases also a graphical
heritage. In this way, a research on the architecture of Miguel
Farah Zakzuk begins, who was one of the young architects
of the mid-20th century responsible for generating
a syncretic fusion between traditional language, tailored to
the specific conditions of the Caribbean tropics, and the
new emerging modern style of the time, which allowed
for new ways of conceiving and constructing architecture.
The rediscovery and consistent exploration of an unpublished
graphic archive containing part of the professional work
of the studied author, together with architectural surveys, elements
of graphic representation, and oral sources, allowed
the initiation of this investigative work where the design
methods of architect Miguel Farah are analyzed to conceive
the new architecture of the mid-20th century in Caribbean
cities, maintaining the essence of the tropical spirit in
his works, under the international style that was in full swing
Yoga for Sleep, Pain, Mood, and Executive Functioning in Persons With Traumatic Brain Injury
Abstract
Date Presented 4/1/2017
We used a mixed-methods design to demonstrate the benefit of a group yoga intervention for persons with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI). Aligned with the holistic principle of occupational therapy, a yoga-based intervention combining mind and body in practice might be an ideal alternative for clients with chronic TBI.

Panel discussion on activism and justice
Includes descriptive metadata provided by producer in MP4 file: "Politics, Economics and Social Issues - Video - Panel discussion on activism and justice." By John Seigenthaler and Kerry Kennedy. Seigenthaler, journalist and founder of the First Amendment Center, moderates the discussion, which features a video appearance by Kerry Kennedy, human rights activist and author of Speak Truth to Power. Kennedy was scheduled to appear in person but could not because of inclement weather. The other participants are Marina Pisklakova, who worked on behalf of abused women in Russia, Stephen Bradberry, a community activist in New Orleans, and Lucas Benitez, a migrant farm labor organizer. The discussion was held Jan. 28, 2010 and was part of the 2010 Martin Luther King Commemorative Lecture Series. Vanderbilt Student Government president Wyatt Smith introduces Seigenthaler after the showing of a short video promoting the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights is seen. Another video is also shown as part of Kennedy's presentation
Decentralizing the provision of health services : an incomplete contracts approach
The author studies the allocation-between a central government and a local authority--of responsibility for planning, financing, and operations for the delivery of health services, in the context of an incomplete contracts model. In this model, inputs are required of both the central government and local authorities but they are unable to write down, and commit to, a complete and binding contract describing the actions both should take. The model is meant to capture the tradeoff between central and local authority in decisions about both financing and the provision of services. Each party provides a specific input--for example, the central government establishes a drug procurement system while the local authority designs and implements an incentive scheme to get doctors to carry out their responsibilities appropriately. The responsibility for delivery of services is identified with the ownership of essential infrastructure, such as the clinic or hospital. The author finds that to maximize the joint surplus of the two public bodies: Ownership of the facility should be given to the party that most values the well-being of local residents. (This way, if ex post bargaining breaks down, each still enjoys some benefits from the other's actions.) Financing authority and responsibility for delivering services should be negatively correlated. Generally it is optimal to allocate tax authority to the party that values the residents'well-being less--in other words, separate spending responsibility (ownership) from financing authority. A heavier financing burden (access to a small and inefficient tax base) has the same incentive effect as asset ownership: It increases the return to effort. If transferring ownership of the physical asset is costly (because the party that builds the asset has an inherent advantage in operating it-that is, there is some human capital embodiment), it may be optimal for the party with the higher construction costs to have planning authority. Somewhat paradoxically, the greater the costs of transferring assets from one party to the other, the more likely that ownership of the facilities and their provision should be separated.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Decentralization,Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Labor Policies,Economic Theory&Research,National Governance,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies
