Application of multispectral UAV to estimate mangrove biomass in Vietnam: A case study in Dong Rui commune, Quang Ninh Province
Mangroves play an important role in coastal estuarine areas with different ecological functions, such as reducing the impact of waves and currents, accumulating biomass and sequestering carbon. However, estimation of terrestrial biomass in mangrove areas, especially in Vietnam, has not been fully studied. The application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), mounted with multispectral cameras combined with field verification is an effective method for estimating terrestrial biomass for mangroves, as it reduces field survey time and allows for greater spatial range research. In this study, ground biomass was estimated for the mangrove area in the Dong Rui commune, based on multispectral image data obtained from UAV and survey results in 16 standard cells measuring actual biomass according to four regression models: Log-Log, Log-Lin, Lin-Log and Lin-Lin. The results of comparing the data from these four models show that the log-log model has the highest accuracy with a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.831). Based on the results of the analysis and selection of ground-based biomass estimation models, a biomass map was established for the UAV flying area in the Dong Rui mangrove forest with biomass values ranging from 20 Mg/ha to 150 Mg/ha. In summary, we present a biomass estimation method through four basic linear regression models for mangrove areas, based on multispectral image data obtained from ultrahigh-resolution UAV. The resulting research results can serve as a basis for managers to calculate and synchronise the payment of carbon services, thus contributing to effectively promoting the livelihoods of local people
Activity recognition using optimized reduced kernel extreme learning machine (OPT-RKELM) / Yang Dong Rui
In the past decade, research related to Human Activity Recognition (HAR) based on devices embedded sensors has shown good overall recognition performance. As a consequence, HAR has been identified as a potential topic for healthcare assessment systems. One of the major research problems is the computation resources required by machine learning algorithm used for classification for HAR. Numerous researchers have tried different methods to enhance the algorithm to improve performance, some of these methods include Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees, Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM), and Deng’s Reduced Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (RKELM). However, unsatisfactory accuracy, slow learning speed, and stability is still a problem. In this study, we have purposed a model named as Optimized Reduced Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (Opt RKELM). It applies the characteristic of ReliefF algorithm to rank and select top scoring features for feature selection. ReliefF can solve the problem of large feature dimension in the existing RKELM. By using clustering method K-Means, we have found the best center point position to calculate Kernel matrix. at last, we have employed Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) to get the optimal kernel parameter in the proposed model. To evaluate the effectiveness of Opt-RKELM, two benchmark datasets related to human activity recognition problems are used. Mapping tree species of wetlands using multispectral images of UAVs and machine learning: A case study of the Dong Rui Commune
Wetlands provide resources, regulate the environment, and stabilize shorelines; however, they are among the most vulnerable ecosystems in the world. The classification of mangrove species allows the determination of the habitat of each species, thereby serving as a basis for determining protection solutions and planning plans for mangrove conservation and restoration according to each environmental condition. We used Phantom 4 multispectral unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect data from wetland areas in the Dong Rui Commune, which is one of the most diverse and valuable wetland ecosystems in northern Vietnam. A tree-species classification map was constructed through a combination of the object-based image analysis method and spectral reflectance values of each plant species, and the characteristic distributions of mangrove plants, including Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora stylosa, and Kandelia obovata, were determined with an overall accuracy of 91.11 % and a kappa coefficient (K) of 0.87. The overall accuracy for Rhizophora stylosa was the highest (94.23 %), followed by Kandelia obovata (93.61 %) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (85.50 %). An experiment was conducted to map plant taxonomy in the same area based only on a graph of spectral reflectance values at five single-spectral bands, and normalized difference vegetation index values were constructed, resulting in an overall accuracy of 78.22 % and a K of 0.67. The constructed map is useful for classifying, monitoring, and evaluating the structure of each group of mangroves, thereby serving as a basis for determining the distribution of each mangrove species according to natural conditions and contributing to the formulation of policies for afforestation and mangrove conservation in Dong Rui commune
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
