Le radici ottomane della Turchia di Erdogan

    No full text

Titanium anchors for the repair of distal Achilles tendon ruptures: preliminary report of a new surgical technique

    No full text
From January 1995 to July 1996, the authors used Mitek GIV titanium anchors to treat seven patients with acute rupture of the Achilles tendon (four men, three women; average age 52.42 years; range, 33-62 years). All subjects had a total rupture of the most distal aspect of the tendon; none had an avulsion fracture. After dissection down to the paratenon, the reinsertion site was selected and a 2 to 3-cm-long trough carved through the cortex. Three holes were drilled at a distance of 0.5 cm one from the other and 1 cm parallel and distal to the trough. The anchors were then threaded, inserted into the holes, and engaged. Surgery was completed by resection of the frayed ends, reparation of the tendon, and insertion of the terminal end into the trough. At 6 months postoperative, a modified Mandelbaum and Pavanini clinical assessment indicated five excellent and two good outcomes. There were no cases of deep of superficial wound infection or skin necrosis. Despite the small number of patients and the short follow-up period, the authors believe this technique shows promise and that in selected cases the use of titanium anchors can facilitate the task of the surgeon and enable patients to return to normal and sports activities within 5 months after surgery

The effectiveness of photodynamic therapy on planktonic cells and biofilms and its role in wound healing

    No full text
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the application of a photoactive dye followed by irradiation that leads to the death of microbial cells in the presence of oxygen. Its use for controlling biofilms has been documented in many areas, particularly oral care. However, the potential use of PDT in the treatment of chronic wound-associated microbial biofilms has sparked much interest in the field of wound care. The aim of this article is to provide an overview on the effectiveness of PDT on in vitro and in vivo biofilms, their potential application in both the prevention and management of wound biofilm infections and their prospective role in the enhancement of wound healing.Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the application of a photoactive dye followed by irradiation that leads to the death of microbial cells in the presence of oxygen. Clinical efficacy of medical hydrology: an umbrella review

    No full text
The aim of this research was to summarize available scientific evidence on the efficacy of medical hydrology for the management of any health condition. The search was conducted on 26th March 2021, in the following databases: Medline (via PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. All relevant literature reviews investigating the clinical efficacy of interventions characterized by the use of natural mineral waters and muds were included. The quality of studies was assessed with the “AMSTAR 2” tool. After article screening, 49 reviews were included in this work. Overall, retrieved scientific evidence suggests that spa therapy is beneficial for patients affected by some specific musculoskeletal conditions, with improvements potentially lasting up to 9 months. Moreover, balneotherapy can be an integrative support for the management of chronic venous insufficiency and some inflammatory skin diseases like psoriasis. The role of spa therapy in rehabilitation appears relevant as well. More limited, although interesting evidence exists for inhalation and hydropinic therapies. Globally, retrieved evidence suggests that, besides individual wellbeing, medical hydrology can be useful for public health. In particular, higher-quality studies seem to support the integrative use of spa-related interventions for conditions like osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, low back pain of rheumatic origin, and chronic venous insufficiency. However, the body of evidence has some limitations and further clinical trials should be designed for each relevant application to consolidate and expand acquired knowledge

Big data analysis for decision-making processes: challenges and opportunities for the management of health-care organizations

Purpose This study aims to provide a picture of the current state of art in the use of big data for decision-making processes for the management of health-care organizations. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was carried out. The research uses two analyses: descriptive analysis, describing the evolution of citations; keywords; and the ten most influential papers, and bibliometric analysis, for content evaluation, for which a cluster analysis was performed. Findings A total of 48 articles were selected for bibliographic coupling out of an initial sample of more than 5,000 papers. Of the 48 articles, 29 are linked on the basis of their bibliography. Clustering the 29 articles on the basis of actual content, four research areas emerged: quality of care, quality of service, crisis management and data management. Originality/value Health-care organizations believe strongly that big data can become the most effective tool for correctly influencing the decision-making processes. Thus, more and more organizations continue to invest in big data analytics, and the literature on this topic has expanded rapidly. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of the different streams of literature existing, together with gaps in research and future perspectives. The literature is mature enough for an analysis to be made and provide managers with useful insights on opportunities, criticisms and perspectives on the use of big data for health-care organizations. However, to date, there is no comprehensive literature review on the big data analysis in health care. Furthermore, as big data is a "sexy catchphrase," more clarity on its usage may be needed. It represents an important tool to be investigated and its great potential is often yet to be discovered. This study thus sheds light on emerging issues and suggests further research that may be needed
