The Cost of the Government\u27s Failure to Protect Children Witnessing Parental Arrest and Detainment
Preludes, Fugues, and Magnificats Through Time
The author has granted permission for their work to be available to the general public. The following document explores the biographical, socio-cultural, and historical aspects of repertoire in the author’s graduate organ recital, including an analysis of each piece. Pedagogical in nature, this project’s objective is to increase readers’ familiarity with the recital repertoire and help them gain perspective on historically-informed performance practices and techniques as they relate to each piece. The performance repertoire includes: J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B minor BWV 544, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault’s Livre d’Orgue Suite du deuxième ton, Felix Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugue in G major No. 2, and Marcel Dupré’s Magnificat opus 18, nos 10, 13 , and 15. These preludes, fugues, and Magnificats offer insights into the development of composition techniques in different musical eras. The following material is divided into six chapters: two serving as an introduction to the Magnificat and prelude and fugue, and each of the remaining chapters highlighting one of the four composers and their pieces.Musi
History, Nationalism, and Public Opinion: The Memorialization of George Mason
The George Mason Memorial , built on the National Mall in 2002, captures the accomplishments of George Mason, a Founding Father, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, and he refused to sign the U.S. Constitution. Identifying Mason\u27s history and exploring the motivations and struggles of the creation of the memorial opens a conversation for public opinion regarding the memorial\u27s physical manifestation. The height of the Jefferson Memorial, the height of the George Washington obelisk, and the beauty of the Lincoln Memorial is seen as a testament of their god-like status in American history. So, where does this leave Mason’s memorial? Is he a lowly and personable figure like the rest of us, or a figure intentionally left out of the spotlight? This project attempts to answer this question by connecting theories of memorialization and primary documents from the Gunston Hall library, Mason\u27s home. The theories include Seth C. Bruggeman\u27s construction of nationalism and individual interest, David Gobel and Dave Rossell\u27s theory of a rich past and a reflective present, and Nathan Glazer and Cynthia R. Field\u27s organic demonstration and manufactured aesthetic. The three theories, the published newspaper and journal articles of the memorial\u27s opening date, and the reports and personal notes taken by First Regent of Gunston Hall, and Senator Charles Robb are connected in their attempt to find an answer. The narrow focus of the project is used to understand how American\u27s utilize public space and select historical figures to memorialize
Reception of Casandra myth in Modern Literature
Ancient Greek mythological creatures are used in modern literature to show interest to readers in prehistory. In this bachelor's thesis, the image of the ancient Greek woman-prophet Cassandra is explored and analysed in detail based on “Cassandra”, a novel by the German author Christa Wolf. Wolf's depiction of Cassandra is compared to the ones produced by ancient Greek authors. Christa Wolf describes the tragic fate and superiority of the female prophet over the male gender. In the subtext of her work, Christa Wolf describes the political situation in the German Democratic Republic in the 1980s, as well as her emotions and ideas connected to the situation

První část práce obsahuje teoretický úvod k tématu mýtu a mytologie, představení nejdůležitějších teorií o mýtu a jeho zpracování v literatuře. Keywords Christa Wolf, myth, mythology, myth revision, Cassandra, Medea, social functions of literature Abstract The subject of this thesis is the incorporation of ancient mythology in the story Cassandra and in the novel Medea: A Modern Retelling by Christa Wolf with the backdrop of the author's own understanding of the function of literature. The first part of the work contains a theoretical introduction to the topic of myths and mythology and presents the most important theories about myths and their incorporation in literature. The subsequent part of the work focuses on the understanding of a myth and its function as used by Christa Wolf. The core of this work is an analysis of the literary incorporation of mythological substance in the writings specified above and a comparison with the incorporation of such substance in the works of ancient authors Aeschylus and Euripides, with the aim of showing through what means and what intentions the author has updated and revised the myth. This part of the work also includes an analysis of the poetological concept of Christa Wolf and the related social functions of literature and the author's role.Institute of Germanic StudiesÚstav germánských studiíFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
The Performativity of the Written Word in Two Anglo-Saxon Wills
abstract: Since scholars first turned their attention to the subject some eighty years ago, one major area of contention in the study of Anglo-Saxon wills has been the function of the written will within Anglo-Saxon culture. Verbal agreements, formalized through oral ceremonies and symbolic actions, were recognized as legally binding; however, many of these agreements were also recorded in writing. Many scholars argue that the written document was superfluous;oral ceremonies were written down only in the case of memory failure and the documents themselves had no real performative function. Others see the existence of the written will to be evidence of a shift toward a more textually-dependent culture, reliant on the written as a way of managing society. It is unlikely, however, that the Anglo-Saxons themselves viewed the oral and written in such a binary manner. Rather, the two forms were intermingled, lending potency and performative power to one another. The present study concentrates on two Anglo-Saxon wills in order to demonstrate the ways in which the verbal and written work together in specific texts. By having such a singular focus, a more nuanced understanding of how the oral and written interanimate each other in ninth-century England can be attained. The vernacular will of Alfred, King of the West Saxons from 871-899, and the Latin will of Æðelric, son of Æðelmund (804), are particularly deserving of close attention. While they contain several features that indicate the authority of the voiced statement, they also demonstrate an exceptionally strong sense of the importance of the written. These two wills suggest a dynamic period in which the worlds of the oral ceremony and written word were still intermingled but clearly moving toward a valuing of the written as dispositive.Dissertation/ThesisM.A. English 201
Automatic detection of rate change in large data sets with an unsupervised approach: the case of influenza viruses
Influenza viruses evolve at such a high rate that vaccine recommendations need to be changed, but not quite on a regular basis. This observation suggests that the rate of evolution of these viruses is not constant through time, which begs the question as to when such rate changes occur, if they do so independently of the host in which they circulate and/or independently of their subtype. To address these outstanding questions, we introduce a novel heuristics, Mclust*, that is based on a two-tier clustering approach in a phylogenetic context to estimate (i) absolute rates of evolution and (ii) when rate change occurs. We employ the novel approach to compare the two influenza surface proteins, hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, that circulated in avian, human and swine hosts between 1960-2014 in two subtypes: H3N2 and H1N1. We show that the algorithm performs well in most conditions, accounting for phylogenetic uncertainty by means of bootstrapping and scales up to analyze very large data sets. Our results show that our approach is robust to the time-dependent artifact of rate estimation, and confirm pervasive punctuated evolution across hosts and subtypes. As such, the novel approach can potentially detect when vaccine composition needs to be updated. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Myth in judita vaičiūnaitė's dramaturgic texts.
The focus of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine the transformation of myth in three poetic plays from the "Pavasario Fleita" collection, specifically "Kasandra", "Apsiaustis," and "Pavasario Fleita". The modernist era began to alter realist traditions, reviving myth and creating mythical creatures and foundational mythical histories. This bachelor's research component explores the interplay between myth and text, providing an overview of the poetic expression that reveals how J. Vaičiūnaitė cultivates myth in her poetic drama. It investigates the poetic nature of the author’s dramatic texts, considered here as a rhetorical device, aiming to understand how myth functions in each play from the collection and how the author transforms mythical narratives, bringing forth new meanings. The analysis demonstrates that although many plays incorporate myth into a specific subtext, preserving its foundational elements, Judita Vaičiūnaitė offers varied interpretations and meanings of myth. The playwright juxtaposes myth with contemporary boundaries, employing a dual design strategy and distorting the myth's narrative line. The author not only critiques the values of the myth but also highlights its timelessness and constancy
Effects of Menthol on Weight Regain and Maintenance of Caloric Restriction: A Pilot Study
abstract: The prevalence of excessive weight gain (obesity) has steadily increased since about 1980. Excessive weight gain is associated with many comorbidities; thus, a successful treatment is needed. The most common form of non-surgical treatment for excessive weight gain is caloric restriction with the intent to reduce body weight by 10%. Though this treatment is successful at reducing body weight, it often fails at maintaining the weight loss. Dietary menthol has been suggested as a possible treatment for excessive weight gain and has produced promising results as a preventative method for excessive weight gain. Our studies aimed at reducing weight regain and maintaining caloric restriction by feeding male Sprague-Dawley rats 0.5% dietary menthol during a period of caloric restriction, aimed at reducing their body weight by 10%, following an experimental period where the rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or low-fat diet (LFD). The effects of the dietary menthol were observed during the weight regain period following the caloric restriction period. Two studies were conducted, and both were unable to achieve a maintenance of weight loss following caloric restriction, although our first study was able to produce a delay in weight regain and did not show any evidence of increased thermogenesis in menthol-treated rats. Our findings differ from the findings of previous studies on dietary menthol which could possibly be due to species effects, differences in procedures, age effects, or effects of different fatty acid compositions. The contrasting results in our studies could be due to genetic differences between litters used or a difference in manufacturing of the menthol diet between studies. Given the partial response to menthol in the first study, it can be suggested that the concentration of 0.5% may be below the threshold of menthol sensitivity for some rats. Future research should focus on increasing the concentration of dietary menthol from 0.5% to 1%, since the current concentration did not yield a reduction in weight regain or maintenance of caloric restriction
MYTHOLOGY AND FEMINISM IN CHRISTA WOLF\u27S NOVEL CASSANDRA
Magistrsko delo obravnava delo nemške pisateljice Christe Wolf, Kasandra. Avtorica preko glavne protagonistke prikaže svoj odnos do mitologije in feminizma. Gre za roman, ki je avtorici prinesel veliko nagrad, predvsem pa je prejela veliko pozitivnih kritik, čeprav se v romanu skrivata podoba sedanjega časa in kritičen odnos do sodobnih razmer.
V romanu je precej povezav z avtorico, zato so v nalogi opisani biografski podatki Christe Wolf, njeno razmišljanje o sodobni svetovni politiki in vlogi ženske v »moškem« svetu. My master\u27s degree thesis discusses the novel Cassandra written by German author Christa Wolf. The author reveals her attitude towards feminism and mythology through the main protagonist. The novel has been rewarded several times and the author has received many good reviews in spite of her critical attitude towards contemporary conditions.
Since the novel includes many autobiographical elements, the thesis contains also Christa Wolf\u27s biography, her thinking about contemporary world politics and a role of a woman in the \u27\u27man\u27s\u27\u27 world. Different aspects of mythology and feminism presented in the theoretical part enable easier comprehension of the novel. When analysing the theory, we refered to the researches of Meletinski, we were interested in contemporary remaking of myths, since Wolf reconstructed the myth of the Trojan War. I also described the period of antiquity, sociopolitical order and the role of women in ancient Greece. Wolf\u27s frame of the story is Homer\u27s Iliad, therefore I also decided to describe the so-called \u27\u27Homer\u27s world\u27\u27. Further we clarified the theory of feminism and gender including the role of women and their writing. There is a great emphasis especially on the research of Toril Moi, who had precisely researched the concept and the theory of feminism
