Gilbert Doctorow, The Russian gentry and the coup d'état of 3 June 1907. The gentry were the chief beneficiaries of the coup d'état of 3 June 1907. The new general electoral law issued on that date conferred on them the dominant position in the State Duma. This fact and certain boasts later made by gentry spokesmen have led historians to believe that gentry pressure was the cause and determinant of the coup d'état. In the present essay this assumption is tested against the record of corporate gentry activity in the year preceding the coup and is found to be false. The several lobbying efforts of the gentry for change in the electoral system were themselves inspired by bold actions of the government. Moreover, none of the gentry's specific proposals was subsequently adopted by the government. At most, gentry activity merely provided a propitious setting for the coup. Doctorow Gilbert S. The Russian gentry and the coup d'État of 3 June 1907. Gilbert, a well-known dancing master, notes that his book will deal only with round dances, and for other dances or rules of etiquette, the reader should turn elsewhere. After a brief discussion of the positions of the feet, the author discusses, in some length, the waltz position. The manual gives the directions for a large number of waltz, polka, galop, redowa, and mazurka variations--many of which are not described in other contemporary dance literature

    Scattering Theory of Gilbert Damping

    No full text
The magnetization dynamics of a single domain ferromagnet in contact with a thermal bath is studied by scattering theory. We recover the Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert equation and express the effective fields and Gilbert damping tensor in terms of the scattering matrix. Dissipation of magnetic energy equals energy current pumped out of the system by the time-dependent magnetization, with separable spin-relaxation induced bulk and spin-pumping generated interface contributions. In linear response, our scattering theory for the Gilbert damping tensor is equivalent with the Kubo formalism.Kavli Institute of NanoscienceApplied Science
