    Volta: Research and Showcase

    No full text
Developing software as a service is a new trend in the IT industry. Volta is a new technology that targets simplifying this type of software. It offers developers a toolkit that enables Web development in any .NET language. This is done by recompiling the CIL code to JavaScript for the client tier (browser) and a .NET application for the Web server. The decision of determining on which tier certain code should run is easily carried through by adding an attribute to a class. A showcase has been developed stretching the possibilities of the first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Volta. A CTP is a pre-release version of software intended as a proof-of-concept for the community. The idea of the showcase was to provide users an impression of their carbon-footprint relative to others, accomplished by using Web services and information provided by users themselves. The experiences gained by building this showcase have been used in the research for Voltaâs value for Web application projects. The showcase was also submitted for Microsoftâs Imagine Cup software development competition, which imposed additional requirements on the showcase. Many issues were encountered during the development, which forced the project group to adjust the requirements while implementing. The end result offers users login functionality, the ability to enter its food, house and travel CO2-emission and provides an overview of the userâs past and present carbon-footprint. The project also focused on researching the possibilities of Volta. A number of research questions were posed and investigated in order to provide better information about the strengths and weaknesses of Volta. This led to the discovery of a number of problems from which the following suggestions for improvements were derived: 1. Provide more documentation 2. Equalize the behavior of Volta code in Debug and Release mode 3. Decrease the number of restrictions on classes 4. Increase cooperation with other technologies 5. Optimize performance 6. Increase security functionality Although a developer should still be aware of the traps of distributed computing, Volta can offer benefits for developing applications. Web applications can be built with all .NET languages. Developers do not have to worry about the communication code between tiers. The facilities of the Visual Studio IDE can be used for testing, debugging and cooperating with other technologies. The end-to-end profiler is a useful tool for analyzing and optimizing a tier-split application. The community technology preview of Volta looks promising. It is currently not fit for developing actual Web applications, but if the developers continue working on Volta and address the issues mentioned, Volta could prove to be a useful toolkit for Web development.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

A remote guesthouse in the Brazilian province of Rio de janeiro is using electricity from the nuclear fed power grid. The owner would like to change the energy supply from nuclear to hydropower if a hydropower plant would produce enough energy to keep the guesthouse running. A small hydropower plant could possibly produce enough energy for the guesthouse. The owners of guesthouse have got expansion plans and at the moment the energy bills are reasonably high. Also several devices are not used very often because of the high price in use. By the cheap way of producing electricity, the Vila Volta guesthouse could change a lot of non-electronic fed devices into electronic fed devices, which would make the guesthouse more modern. Examples of these devices are boilers and the sauna. Another possible advantage is the fact that the owners don’t have to carry the barrels of gas into the valley. To limit the Bachelors thesis project to hydraulic engineering questions, a feasibility and achievability study is done for a hydropower plant at the Vila Volta guesthouse. Designing and building the hydropower plant is not the main issue. These issues will be dealt with later on by the owners of the guesthouse themselves. The writers of this thesis investigated different options, but did not make any important decisions. The main goal of this study is to answer the following question: “Is it feasible and achievable for the owner of the Vila Volta guesthouse to build a small hydropower plant in order to produce enough energy to fulfil the demand of energy?”Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Quantifying the trade-offs in re-operating dams for the environment in the Lower Volta River

The construction of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in the Lower Volta River basin in Ghana changed the downstream riverine ecosystem and affected the lives of downstream communities, particularly those who lost their traditional livelihoods. In contrast to the costs borne by those in the vicinity of the river, Ghana has enjoyed vast economic benefits from the affordable hydropower, irrigation schemes and lake tourism that developed after construction of the dams. Herein lies the challenge; there exists a trade-off between water for river ecosystems and related services on the one hand and anthropogenic water demands such as hydropower or irrigation on the other. In this study, an Evolutionary Multi-Objective Direct Policy Search (EMODPS) is used to explore the multi-sectoral trade-offs that exist in the Lower Volta River basin. Three environmental flows, previously determined for the Lower Volta, are incorporated separately as environmental objectives. The results highlight the dominance of hydropower production in the Lower Volta but show that there is room for providing environmental flows under current climatic and water use conditions if the firm energy requirement from Akosombo Dam reduces by 12% to 38% depending on the environmental flow regime that is implemented. There is uncertainty in climate change effects on runoff in this region; however multiple scenarios are investigated. It is found that climate change leading to increased annual inflows to the Akosombo Dam reduces the trade-off between hydropower and the environment as this scenario makes more water available for users. Furthermore, climate change resulting in decreased annual inflows provides the opportunity to strategically provide dry-season environmental flows, that is, reduce flows sufficiently to meet low flow requirements for key ecosystem services such as the clam fishery. This study not only highlights the challenges in balancing anthropogenic water demands and environmental considerations in managing existing dams but also identifies opportunities for compromise in the Lower Volta River.Policy AnalysisWater Resource

Much has been written and said about the fuller, more equal and less onerous role which rural women, especially in African countries should play in the context of national socio-economic development and about the policies and programmes to be pursued to bring this about. The starting point of this study is the observations and analysis by the author of concrete situations of two African countries, i.e. to show what the actual pattern of employment and labour utilisation as well as the skill needs and ways of acquiring them are among women in rural communities. It is on the basis of his field studies that the author, who has many years of experience in field work with rural people, puts forward a number of conclusions and suggestions about rural "women-power", its development and utilisation. These views may not find general agreement among all concerned with improving the lot of rural women, but the author makes the point forcefully that adequate knowledge about what the present situation really is and what the tendencies are is essential to working out policies and programmes to bring about changes and improvements which are acceptable to the rural community at large and which are therefore likely to be effective. The study is a revised version of a working paper issued in the framework of the ILO World Employment Programme and specifically its Research Project on Education and Employment. This project, which is supported by a grant from DANIDA, aims at elucidating the education/training-labour market-employment links with a special view to contributing to the knowledge base of policy making in these areas. While the ILO has commissioned the working paper and encouraged its preparation in many ways, it does not necessarily share the conclusions and suggestions expressed by the author. The social and economic activities of the rural family in Zaire and Upper Volta; Teaching occupational skills for girls and women in rural areas; An assessment of some agricultural projects and their effect on the traditional pattern of work of women in rural areas; Some suggestions for improving skill acquisition for men and women in rural areas; Skill acquisition for non-farm occupations in rural areas; Conclusions and suggestions for further studies and researc
